Have you ever noticed how there aren't that many "traditional" styled concepts (like wearing hanbok) in kpop?

I mean traditional as in wearing a Hanbok.

Many idols wear them for photoshoots, etc, and there are A LOT of dramas + movies centered around that time period but I've seen only very few groups have a comeback with groups wearing one.

Of course not on stage (hard to dance in) but in the mvs.

I think it'd be cool to see a them doing a traditional styled mv.

What do you think is the reason for this? I think maybe because a lot of groups have foreign members (especially

from China), companies don't feel comfortable with them doing a traditional like comeback.

Discuss, please~~~

I think new girl group S.E.T. comes quite close in trying traditional Korean concept in the MV, they use Korean house setting and wear modified hanbok, albeit only one member wearing it.

The same member wearing the modified hanbok on live stage too.

There's a demand for Historical dramas but there's no demand for traditional Korean style in music- this might have something to do with Western producers and western influence in the music scene rather than the tv verse. Although years ago i think it was the reverse, Kpop is more known among foreigners over dramas. And in order to sell, they'll align themselves more with what trending in America- since Korean seemed to getting more influenced by america by large as well media wise

Biggest example is tropical house was a trend in america and now we see more groups like BTS, BlackPink, Winner, SHINEE doing stuff like that now.

just my shot in the dark guess

Yes, because wearing traditional garb while singing songs about wanting oppa's milkshake or hip-thrusting every other measure will go so well with the Korean public. rolleyes.gif

I find it strange too especially since in neighbouring countries like China and Japan traditional concepts are often mixed in.

Yep, as a J-idol fan I often see idol groups wearing kimonos in mvs and I love it. It's really cool how they mix part of their culture into their music.

YES and it's so beautiful too. Traditional Asian architecture and costumes just give this elegant feel and look. Idols really should use it more instead of the same old sexy or cute concepts.

i've also never really noticed American musicians dressing up like Pilgrims in their music videos either 0u0plz.png

I think people generally just don't run around wearing clothes from hundreds of years ago (unless they're at a living history museum) or on some weird TV show.

But, I do think they can be beautiful-however older style of clothes tend to require a lot of layers and don't offer as much movement.

While not wearing traditional clothes, a lot of CROSS GENE's songs and sets are inspired by Asian fusion. La-di Da-di's dance was inspired by martial arts. The set and song itself, as well as the wardrobe patterns are also based on East Asian art.

Shooting Star with swords, more martial arts influence and the sets (which are beautiful!)

It'd be interesting to see them wear traditional clothes in an MV though. I'd love a samurai concept.

Hmm, I would love that too! Maybe modified hanboks, modernized jewellery motifs. Also, influence of traditional musical instruments.

I think, Kpop is very deliberately denuded of ultra-specific Korean elements so it is easy for other countries to accept.
