What albums do you consider "Must Have/listen" for C-Pop fans?

Jolin's latest is pretty good

Also, most of Jay Chou's older stuff is pure gold and even if you don't like his songs there's always a cool mv to accompany it

Here's the playlist of all his albums and mvs

And if you're coming from kpop these are probably the ones you should start with :)

I dont usually reply to these threads because it just becomes a mess of different youtube videos and individual song recs, however, the actual question I think is quite rare and dare I say hard to answer. mandopop is full of great individual songs, but many albums fall short of the quality of the lead song. Of course that happens in all music from any country, but in my experience it is more common in mandopop that you get one or two quality songs and then a bunch of fillers. The overall production quality isnt very high imo.

So if I take away those kind of albums and stick to ones that I think stay at a certain level of quality all the way through, I would suggest the following.

Jay Chou 'Fantasy'

William Wei 'Someone is waiting'

Gary Chaw 'Hollywood Zoo'

Sodagreen 'Little Universe'

Cheer Chen 'Peripeteia'

Wang Leehom 'Unbelievable'

Mayday 'Time Machine'

Jolin Tsai 'Muse'

Of course music is so subjective and I dont know if these will suit your taste but I think these albums do a fine job of representing everything good about mandopop.

this person made this same exact thread in the J-section and has not responded to people's recs in either thread. So i don't feel like giving my own recs...

I apologise. Something happened irl which kept me away from the internet in general nevermind this forum. I have responded to those in the J-section and do appreciate everyone helping me. As I said in the J-pop thread I had planned on replying to everyone but because I wasn't able to get on here for a little while and some people posted quite long lists I don't think it's viable without just cluttering up threads.

I do appreciate everyone who helped me find new artists to listen to. When it comes to Chinese music I started with literally 0% knowledge wheras I knew a little of J-pop through K-pop artists promoting over there.

I was really confused watching that 'Mine Mine' video, he looked so familiar, then I realised who he was! I've seen some of his movies and the songs people have posted on here are good too. Multitalented indeed.

i will apologise too then. Too many times for these types of recommendation threads, people will go through the trouble of finding videos to recommend and the OP won't respond. So i've become hesitant to reply to these types of threads lately until i see that the OP is actually listening to the songs.

I'll post my recs a later.

Thank you, and I do understand. I've been on this site long before I actually made an account so I know the type of threads you are talking about

Start with a Jay Chou album. From his very first to the most recent. A lot of his songs are 'classics' in Mandopop

I've bought his latest album on iTunes and pretty much love it from start til end so I'm definitely going to check out his other work.

First of all thank you for your recommendations. I think Jolin Tsai is my favourite so far but I haven't been able to get through all of them yet!

About knowing my taste, I saw some other people post similar things and I thought about including it but at the same time I want a wide range of what people consider "the best of Mandopop" to try and expand my collection.

@presario182

please learn to use the Multiquote feature to quote multiple people in your post.

Anyway i'll give my album recs. People have said Jolin and Jay already so i'll leave them out of mine.

S.H.E. - SHERO

SingerSen - The World In My Eyes

R Chord - So After I've Grown Up

AM444 - Eye Wonder

Dominique Tsai - Black Rainbow

Waa Wei - No Crying

that should be good enough for a while.

Yes to these two. My favourite SHE album and Black Rainbow is probably one of the most underrated albums, it should have made Dom more of a star. I think her voice isnt the best, but it has this quality to it that just works with those songs on Black Rainbow.

i love SHERO. Such a solid album from them. I'm kinda surprised nobody mentioned them in their recs.

And yes Black Rainbow is really good and underrated. I remember when i found her i posted some of her stuff in the c-turd but people said they liked her older stuff more. And i'm like....her older stuff ain't that good. Her singing improved a lot since then. It was like she was trying to sing like Jay in her older songs with a slightly rockish but not really style, and it didn't work for me. Black Rainbow suited her so much more and it's a really good pop album. I wish she'd put out another album.
