Did Winner start the tropical genre trend?

Some Cool Name

I see lots of users are saying "since Really Really became popular, more groups have been releasing tropical songs..." And that made me proud to see the boys becoming a musical trendsetter.

Though, for disclaimer purposes in my limited knowledge of the groups I don't follow, there may be a blown up song or a defining moment other than the huge success of RR that might have contributed to the tropical beat fever in SK.

So, is Winner the year-defining musical act of 2017 or do you disagree with this fact?

Edit: In South Korea, to clear out confusion.

I would say SM started the trend in Korea (they've been on the general EDM train for a while) because they really wanted to make it a thing last year with Taeyeon - Why and BoA x Beenzino - No Matter What etc. NCT even filmed an MV for Switch which is tropical house song. Red Velvet and Taeyeon have also included trop house b-sides in their recent albums (Some Love, Zoo, Cover Up). And then other groups from smaller companies have also released trop house songs like Berry Good, Brave Girls and CLC.

But I would say the first real hit is Really Really. It's about hit 1M downloads possibly next week (in less than 4 months) and I can't think of another tropical house song that did that well in SK until it was released. Also not many people expected it to that well because it's a boy group dance song but it became a trend and the song is heard all over Seoul, even on big TV shows like IC. After Really Really was released, Ed Sheeran's Shape of You also rose on the charts and it's currently still in the top 20-30 on Melon after like 3 months (even outpacing Really Really).

Oh, to avoid misunderstanding, I had meant in SK.

And thanks for the replies! I think most agree that there are other pioneers before, but Winner helped popularize it with a hit and the spike of impact gave a good trajectory for the trend to truly bloom.

Winner started generic songs trend

You confused RR with some other songs that spawned at random places trying to recreate it and failing.

troll leave winner alone! and to answer your question the genre got back last year with SM releases to establish they Scream records label

Ah, it was a good idea of SM to diversify and make a sublabel dedicated to a genre. If I remember correctly, ScreaM was for the umbrella EDM genre, right?
