I think he's over Korea and the idol life and he wants to live and work in China full time. Which is understandable. But not really compatible to being an EXO member. I just think Lay has painted himself into a corner with his statements that he will never leave EXO so even if he wanted to leave, which I think he does, then it would create a lot of backlash. So I think what he is doing is the slow-fade until fans forget about him. Then he'll quietly not renew his contract or he will buy SM out or he will or has come to a mutually beneficial arrangement with SM until his contract expires then he will go solo in China with his own company. Of course, it would be nice to see Lay "hold down the fort" in China ready for EXO's return in a few years once things have died down politically but then I don't see Lay ever moving back to Korea since he has lived in China the past few years. Long term I'd be very surprised if he was an *active full time* member of EXO in another 5 years. His heart just isn't in the idol life anymore. But we'll just have to see...
