Like, if you put together 2NE1, KARA, SNSD and the Wonder Girls at their peak you wouldn't reach half the success the Spice Girls had in Europe back then; it's fucking insane, since from 1996 to 1998 - Geri leaving was the worst thing that could've ever happened to them, since she was their leader and everyone knew it - the amount of fan hysteria and tabloid frenzy they caused can be compared only to that of the Beatles in the 1960s. Media and the music industry have changed so much in the last 20 years that I don't think any pop act will ever become as huge as they were in the future: it's easier to become famous now thanks to the internet and social media, but the internet and social media also make it so no one can have the pop music world in a chokehold like they did back then. And now, there are always a few pop girl groups around, even in the West, but back in 1996 they were one of a kind - every other girl group was firmly rooted in R&B. In fact, I think that contemporary K-Pop girl groups wouldn't exist if not for them, especially those who go for "girl crush" concepts, up to and including 2NE1 and Black Pink.
