Finding love at the movies in MBC’s 20th Century Boy and Girl

20thcentury-poster01.jpg

Thirtysomethings acting like teenagers in love? Done right, I find it to be the cutest thing ever, and I have a niggling feeling that 20th Century Boy and Girlwill show us how immaturity can be an endearing quality in the context of romance. This show, about childhood sweethearts who reunite as adults, is populated by a cast of likable, charismatic actors led by Han Ye-seul (Madame Antoine) and Kim Ji-suk (Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People), and I’m happy to see that the recently released posters, stills, and teaser suggest an easy, comfortable rapport between the entire cast.

I look forward to what looks like a cute, breezy watch, especially because there are so many catnips to love in this show’s premise, from first loves that started out as childhood friends to reunited lovers. If the first teaser gave us a nostalgic, almost melancholic take on the childhood sweethearts who become separated, this newest teaser focuses more on their adult lives. Han Ye-seul’s character is a much-loved actress and former idol, and the teaser is narrated throughout by what sounds like an interview with her character.

The teaser starts with Han Ye-seul shyly saying that she thinks that love begins by going to watch a movie together, because you’re hyper-aware of your date’s presence and that’s when you discover that you might come to like that person. We see the high school versions of the leads on just such a date, followed by some adorable couple-y teasing, and younger Kim Ji-suk going in for a kiss. Present-day Kim Ji-suk is just as smooth, nonchalantly handing over some roses and joking that he found them on the ground.

Our hero might have some competition in the form of Lee Sang-woo (All’s Well With a Happy Home), who will play a fellow idol-turned-actor, though his career path has pretty much gone the opposite way of the heroine. Han Ye-seul was and is still a die-hard fan, though, as shown by her shielding him from the rain with an umbrella, completely oblivious to the fact that she’s getting drenched. There’s something so painfully relatable about that, regardless of age; she tells herself that there’s no bigger star than her “oppa.â€

Inevitably though, the interactions between Kim Ji-suk and Han Ye-seul outshine her fangirling, and it’s pretty adorable how both of them light up when Kim Ji-suk corrects her about his relationship status: “I’m not married. Don’t go around spreading fake rumors.†Han Ye-seul continues with her interview, saying that living as a thirtysomething single woman in Korea hasn’t changed much, although it’s accepted that marriage isn’t the happy ending anymore: “But I don’t want to blame myself. And I hope those of you listening do the same.†I love the ending shots of the main couple with Han Ye-seul’s girlfriends, played by Ryu Hyun-kyung (Empress Ki) and Lee Sang-hee (Our Love Story), both as children and then as adults.

The recent strikes at MBC and KBS have delayed the premiere of 20th Century Boy and Girl, which was originally set to start its run next week, but will now premiere October 2. This date is still subject to change, tentatively, but let’s hope the producers make good use of the extra week. In the meantime, MBC will air a rerun of Romance Full of Life next Monday and Tuesday, which is the web and TV drama hybrid the station aired earlier this year, starring Yoon Shi-yoon and Jo Soo-hyang.

Han-Ye-Seul-Mina.jpg&key=ce81887a111b5fb

New stills of Han Ye Seul and gugudan’s Mina in “20th Century Boy and Girl†give a closer look at their synchronization!

In the drama, Han Ye Seul will play top star Sa Jin Jin and will contrast the glamorous image of an actress with her girlish appearance in her everyday life. Mina will depict the character’s teenage years. This aspect of the drama will show Sa Jin Jin’s pre-debut self as an average and vivacious high school student living in the 1990s.

The pictures were released to allow viewers to compare adult Sa Jin Jin with teenager Sa Jin Jin. The first set of pictures displays the wonderful synchronization between the two actors, as we see adult Sa Jin Jin standing outside of her old high school to take a photo, while teenager Sa Jin Jin daydreams in class.

Even in the next set with the two actresses staring intently at someone, they showcase strong resemblance.

With their sweet smiles always in full bloom, the two actresses are reported to be well loved by the staff for keeping up a comfortable atmosphere on set.

A representative of the production company commented that the actresses do their best to express the innocence that Sa Jin Jin holds not just in her high school years, but also 20 years later, and watching them will feel like observing the actual life of one person.

â€œ20th Century Boy and Girl†will tell the story of three 35-year-old women who grew up in the same neighborhood. The drama will follow them from their youth to the present, featuring their awkward relationships and sweet friendships. Written by Lee Seon Hye of the “Reply†series, it will continue on the tradition of slice-of-life dramas. The drama will also star Kim Ji Suk, Lee Sang Woo, Ryu Hyun Kyung, Lee Sang Hee, Ahn Se Ha, and Oh Sang Jin.

The new drama was scheduled to air its first episode on September 25, but MBC’s broadcast schedule for the day shows that a rerun of short drama “Romance Full of Life†will be airing instead.

A source from MBC commented, “Due to the filming schedule, the air date for the first episode has been adjusted.†The first episode will now air on October 2.

Standing Egg – Ordinary Day (ë³´í†µì˜ ë‚ ) 20th Century Boy and Girl OST

I’m not used to dating
Even though everyone does it
I wonder why

Valuable time passes
And only the memories remain
I remember it vaguely
So I smile

No place for even my heart
As I walked under the hot sun rays
On that ordinary day

In a single moment, you passed by
My precious first love

Days breathing in memories have passed
Sometimes I want to take out the memories
That are stored in my heart

If we meet again some day
I might suddenly confess

Even if I don’t say anything
The person who will know my heart
Where is she?

When the cold wind blows
Loneliness gets thicker
Only habitual sighs increase

No place for even my heart
As I walked under the hot sun rays
On that ordinary day

In a single moment, you passed by
My precious first love

The only thing that changes is my increasing age
But you’re still so beautiful

My heart is pounding
Without change, it’s beating toward you

Feels like it’ll be a success, I have a good feeling
We look so good together, what do you think?

Shall we start, carefully?
On this season with the floral wind

I’m a bit awkward so it’s really obvious
I try to dress up and look good
But it’s not easy

Just as I am
Naturally, I will show you

Han Ye Seul revealed that she doesn’t feel any pressure about competing with her close friend Jung Ryeo Won in the same drama time slot.

On September 29, a press conference was held for MBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama “20th Century Boy and Girl.†During the event, Han Ye Seul was asked about having her drama in the same time slot as Jung Ryeo Won. MBC’s “20th Century Boy and Girl†and KBS’s “Witch’s Court†(literal title) will both premiere on October 9 at 10 p.m. KST.'

The actress said, “We were both surprised when we found out our dramas will be airing at the same time, and I think it will be an interesting experience for us. While we were talking about it, we promised to go on a trip together once our dramas end and the person who got higher ratings will have to cover the expenses.â€

She continued to add with a smile, “We don’t really feel any pressure about competing against each other. We actually want to support each other. I really hope both our dramas do well. I hope this will be a good experience for both of us.â€

Everyone is a kid at heart for 20th Century Boy and Girl

20thcentury-poster10502.jpg

Oh, I think I’m going to really adore this heroine. It doesn’t matter that she’s a gorgeous, former idol-turned-actress in her mid-thirties, Han Ye-seul’s (Madam Antoine) character and her interactions with her girlfriends and potential love interests are so relatable from the clips we’ve seen so far. In particular, I’m looking forward to watching her and Kim Ji-suk (Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People) as they adorably rekindle a high school romance in MBC’s 20th Century Boy and Girl, which has finally secured a premiere date for next week.

The recently released teaser for the show uses scenes we’ve already seen, but I absolutely love the new ones of her with her girlfriends, played by Ryu Hyun-kyung (Empress Ki) and Lee Sang-hee (Our Love Story). We start the teaser with them playing a dangerous and familiar game: “Park Bo-gum or Song Joong-ki?†Lol. Men seem to be a standard topic of conversation among the three girlfriends, and their trains of thought run hilariously parallel with discussions I have with my own friends.

The childhood friends are all surprised at the news that their old schoolmate Kim Ji-suk has reappeared. He doesn’t waste any time getting to the point, either: He asks Han Ye-seul out repeatedly, and though we don’t see her respond, he catches her trying to suss out his apartment, to her mortification. Which is when he oh-so-casually hands her the roses he “picked up off the ground somewhere.†They’re going to be so cute.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be firmly in Kim Ji-suk’s camp in this drama, but I find it endearing how Han Ye-seul completely freaks out when she learns she’s been paired up with former idol Lee Sang-woo (All’s Well With a Happy Home) to film the show-within-a-show version of We Got Married. I mean, the hiccups would be the least of my worries if I were going to play fake spouses with my oppa crush.

20thcentury-poster10501.jpg

But, oppa or not, you can’t really beat the familiarity and the transition between childhood friends and sweethearts to adult lovers. It’s a trope I will never get tired of, and there’s something so nostalgic and tinged with a little wistfulness about this teaser’s ending, where we see the trio of girlfriends plus Kim Ji-suk posing in front of their school gates as children and then adults. Han Ye-seul narrates, “2017, the kids met again, having become 35.â€

MBC’s 20th Century Boy and Girl will premiere this coming Monday with a double-header, which means we’ll get episodes 1-4 on October 9.

PREMIERE WATCH

20th Century Boy and Girl

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Romantic comedy
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours in total)

Reasons to watch: This comes from a junior writer on the Answer Mefranchise, and has a tight-knit group of childhood friends at the center. These friends have grown older but have not grown up, which just appeals to me on a personal level. Add in a pair of childhood sweethearts who reunite as adults, and we should be in for a sweet, down-to-earth romance that’s hopefully as funny and relatable as it looks. I’m especially looking forward to the friendships, which should have a different feel from the twentysomething gangs of Age of Youth or Fight My Way, with problems specific to 35-year-olds and their careers. Also, this is Kim Ji-suk’s first romantic leading role after scene-stealing performances in Oh Hae-young Again and Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, so I’ve got my eye on this one to see how he fares.

Kim Ji Suk Shifts Gears To Be A “Rom-Com King†For “20th Century Boy And Girlâ€

Kimjisuk1.jpg&key=163a4c88c845dbab569a24

Only five months after MBC’s â€œRebel: The Thief Who Stole the People,†Kim Ji Suk is returning to the screen for the MBC drama “20th Century Boy and Girl.†The upcoming drama will be Kim Ji Suk’s first lead role in a romantic comedy, which is drawing a lot of excitement from fans.

In “Rebel: The Thief Who Stole the People,†Kim Ji Suk portrayed the tyrannical King Yeon San unlike any previous performance of the historical character. His performance consistently brought him high praise and even became known as his “lifetime role.†Through his delicate performance, King Yeon San was depicted in a whole new light and featured new aspects to the role.

Compared to his last role in “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People†in which his character was crazed and cold blooded, “20th Century Boy and Girl†shows his intellectual side and is the perfect mix of talents and visuals. His character Gong Ji Won will highlight his unique charm as a sweet and straightforward romantic man.

Kim Ji Suk stole the hearts of women viewers in tvN’s “I Need Romance 2†and last year’s “Another Oh Hae Young†where he showed off his lovableness, good sense, vitality, as well as his viability as a “romantic comedy king.†Ladies will not have to wait much longer to catch a glimpse at his heart-fluttering visuals and wide acting spectrum this fall.

Han Ye Seul Strolls The Streets Of Hong Kong In “20th Century Boy And Girl†Stills

Han-Ye-Seul.jpg&key=1e4d94aaead840c2599b

MBC’s upcoming drama “20th Century Boy And Girl†has released stills of Han Ye Seul in Hong Kong.

Han Ye Seul plays the role of Sa Jin Jin, a popular actress who has never lost her spot as a top star since her debut. Han Ye Seul will not only showcase the glamorous life of an actress, but is expected to act out the simple, down-to-earth side of the character as well.

In the released pictures, Sa Jin Jin is spending time in Hong Kong as part of a variety show she is recording. As the show intends to film what celebrities do after they finish their schedules in foreign countries, Sa Jin Jin in the pictures seem relaxed, walking around the streets of Hong Kong and taking selfies with her stylist Mi Dal (played by Lee Yumi).

The production company for “20th Century Boy And Girl†Huayi Brothers Korea shared, “The various unexpected events and meetings during Sa Jin Jin’s short but significant schedule in Hong Kong will unfold and become the main plot at the beginning of the drama.†After explaining that different places in Hong Kong will be introduced through the drama, they also hinted that a special someone had joined Han Ye Seul at Hong Kong, drawing curiosity to whom it could be.

  • 20th Century Boy and Girl: Episodes 1-220thCentury01-02-00069.jpg

If you’re looking for something fizzy and fun, with a sweet romance and a lot of laughs, then you’ve come to the right place! 20th Century Boy and Girl is an easy watch, with characters you’ll love instantly and just enough conflict to hook you in and keep you interested. This show is pure entertainment, which is just what I’ve been needing to get me out of my drama slump—so who wants to join me?

EPISODE 1: “The boy we liked back then†

In 1991, a pair of mothers watch dramas as their 9-year-old children lay nearby in their pajamas. The little boy and girl make faces at each other, poking and fighting like kids do. A few years later, in 1997, the little girl is now a teenager. It’s her turn to watch dramas with her two best friends, and they agree that the 26-year-old characters in the show are waaay too old to get married.

By 2005, the girl, SA JIN-JIN (Han Ye-seul), is 23 years old, and she and her friends are still watching dramas—today it’s My Name Is Kim Sam-soon), particularly the scene in which Sam-soon gets called a spinster at thirty. Jin-jin narrates that at that age, they thought it was a sin to be thirty and unmarried.

20thCentury01-02-00064.jpg 20thCentury01-02-00044.jpg

But time passes, and the three are 35 years old now, and all of them still single. They toss around questions like “Park Bo-gum or Song Joong-ki?†and argue about which celebrity they’d prefer.

HAN AH-REUM (Ryu Hyun-kyung) asserts that the sexiest part of a man is a sinewy forearm, describing a hard-working, responsible man rolling up his sleeves. Then she starts to chide Jin-jin and their third friend, JANG YOUNG-SHIM (Lee Sang-hee), for “saving†their precious bodies, putting on airs of someone much more experienced and worldly. The friends just roll their eyes, used to Ah-reum’s ramblings.

Jin-jin brings the conversation back to the game, where the final round contenders are Gong Yoo (cue excited squeals) and… Anthony. Ah-reum and Young-shim sigh heavily as Jin-jin does an enthusiastic I Love Anthony dance on her bed. Hee, I love these three already.

20thCentury01-02-00078.jpg

The camera pans across Jin-jin’s dresser, which is crammed with photos of her life as a successful idol, model, and actress. She narrates that she’s an unmarried woman over 30, and while she no longer believes that marriage is a happy ending, people still treat her as a fool and send her hurtful, disapproving looks. But she concludes: “I won’t blame myself. Today was good, and I look forward to tomorrow.â€

The last picture we see is of the three girlfriends back in high school, as Jin-jin says that she hopes that whoever is listening to her story feels the same way. There seems to be a fourth person in the picture, but they’re covered by a picture frame so that all we can see is their hand. Back in 1997, a boy in blue-striped sneakers steps up to the school photo case, stopping in front of a large picture of Jin-jin. We don’t see his face, and he stands looking at Jin-jin for a long time.

In the present, the celebrity that Jin-jin was squealing over, ANTHONY (Lee Sang-woo), goes on a radio show, and at home, Jin-jin watches the video of the interview like it’s her job. Her surly little brother MIN-HO (Shin Won-ho) sneers at her, calling her ugly and snapping that her manager wants to see her.

20thCentury01-02-00093.jpg 20thCentury01-02-00089.jpg

Jin-jin takes her time getting ready, taking great care with her clothes, makeup, and accessories before stepping out of her room.

Meanwhile, Jin-jin’s mom (Kim Mi-kyung) goes to the department store with Ah-reum’s mom, and they both beam proudly at a large ad featuring Jin-jin as the spokesmodel. Ah-reum’s mom mentions to a salesgirl how pretty Jin-jin is, and the girl says that she often comes shopping with her mother.

Jin-jin’s mom is excited to be part of the gossip, until the salesgirl says that reportedly, Jin-jin’s mother looks nothing like her daughter, and in fact is mean-looking. Mom barks angrily that Jin-jin’s mother is REALLY NICE OKAY, pfft.

COMMENTS

I expected 20th Century Boy and Girl to be adorable, in large part because both Han Ye-seul and Kim Ji-suk can’t help but be cute as buttons, so it’s no stretch to expect the two of them together to be as precious as a basket of kittens. And so far I’m not disappointed: The show is living up to its promise to be a sweet, quirky love story between two people who knew each other as kids. I wasn’t expecting to learn that Jin-jin and her friends were actually a foursome instead of a threesome, and that Ji-won was part of their tight little circle. I like that twist, because it adds another layer of interest to the fact that something happened, and he wasn’t able to remain friends with them.

I found myself completely charmed by Jin-jin and her quirky little world, but I was surprised by how moved I was when things got serious. Being a celebrity, Jin-jin presents a professional, impervious image to the world, but she’s not cold or unfeeling. She admits, at least to herself, that she’s not untouched when people judge her for still being single at her age. So I’m worried that this sex scandal (which I have no doubt is a fake) will devastate Jin-jin, and I know it will be painful to watch her try to hold her head up and pretend that she’s just fine.

Which brings us to Ji-won, who I’m glad to see is coming back into Jin-jin’s life right when she needs him the most. We don’t know as much about him at this point, but there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s still carrying a massive torch for Jin-jin. The way he looked at her when he saw her in Hong Kong spoke of something much more than a simple boyhood crush, and then the way he swooped in and wordlessly put himself between Jin-jin and the reporters—well, from that moment on I was totally Team Ji-won. If there was any doubt in my mind that Kim Ji-suk could pull off a romantic leading role (hint: there wasn’t), that moment would have dispelled all of my misgivings.

20thCentury01-02-00775.jpg

I wonder what happened back in school to cause Ji-won to break off from the group, while the girls continued to stick together like glue. I have a feeling that it involves the things he remembered about Jin-jin. I’m guessing that Ji-won is the boy she was looking at so nervously in his memories, and I’m assuming that they had feelings for each other, but it didn’t work out and they lost touch.

Obviously, there’s still something there between them, and a part of me hopes that Ji-won is the reason that Jin-jin hasn’t really dated even though she’s in her mid-thirties. Oh sure, there’s her crush on Anthony, but what could be “safer†than a crush on an out-of-reach celebrity?

Speaking of Jin-jin, I’ve decided that she’s officially my new favorite thing. I love how utterly professional she is when she needs to be, but she can be a complete whackadoodle when she’s with her friends. She has a wonderful way of letting go of things that bother her, but she’s not flighty or simple. She just understands that as a celebrity, there’s not much she can do about what people think of her. And it’s awesome that Jin-jin is equally as smart as she is beautiful—her putting Da-young in her place by comparing her to Cassiopeia, managing to insult Da-young’s attitude and ignorance in one fell swoop, was simply brilliant. As much as I’m looking forward to the love story between Jin-jin and Ji-won, I think I could just as happily watch a whole drama about Jin-jin just being her awesome self.
