Jeffrey Jung 19,680
"Women are also human beings" It seems that these simple words are hard to comprehend in Korean society. Death threats, Acid attack threats. It's a crime that girl groups are treated like they have less human rights. Recently the popular girl group Twice members has been receiving acid assault threat from an Ilbe user a site known for its extreme right wing tendencies. The Ilbe member said "Twice left Korea to earn money in Japan do not come to Korea again or i will throw 10 litres of HCL to them". In addition to the post the author of the post also uploaded a picture showing Japanese fans lining up. The author later deleted the post when it became controversial. JYP later said they are taking legal actions against the said user and have been tracking the identity of said person via IP tracking. The agency also said that they will all legal actions possible to prevent more incidents in the future. On April 13th An Ilbe member threatened member Mina with a death threat message and picture. The user said "I'm going to kill you" while posing with a knife on his wrist. As the controversy grows the user said he only did it to make it to popular posts section. JYPE later also said they are taking legal actions against said user. Prior to this, A Pink received death threats 4 times. On May 16th An unidentified man called the police Station with a threat to kill A Pink. On June 14th the Gangnam Police Station received a call from the same man threatening to kill A Pink with a knife but they were unable to find the said person. On June 26th and 30th there were threatening calls to Mapo Police Station and Yeongdeungpo Police Station respectively. The man said he had planted explosives in the Showcase place and KBS Music Bank pre-recording room. The police and explosive squads are quickly dispatched to the scenes but couldn't find any explosives. They rescued more than 150 people in the building and searched the area but couldn't find anything. On March 31 girl group G-Friend's male fan caught recording a member with a hidden camera. One of the member Yerin sensed something weird with the man's glasses and after she inspected it further it turned out to be a hidden camera. The agency said they will ban the said fan from further events and confiscate the equipment. Lots of comments defending the perpretator surfaced in online communities and SNS. Let's go back in time. Terror attacks for the first generation girl groups were common due to paranoia of boy group fans. Once the rumour spreads the girl group will get indiscriminately terrorized whether the rumours are true or not. In 1999 Baby VOX was promoting their 3rd album member Kan Miyoun received death threats from disgruntled HOT fans after rumours of her dating member Moon Heejun spreads. She received a bloody threatening letter with razor blades with contents saying "I'll kill you without Hee Jun oppa i feel lonely be careful". During a fansign an anti fan also injured her hand with a razor blade. She also received a photograph of her getting scratched really badly. There's also a poster of her written "Let's go to hell together". During a festival in Sangdeok Girls High school her mother also received a lot of profanities and verbal abuse from her junior and colleagues. Another member Shim Eunjin was sent a cat carcass. While member Yoon Eunhye was taken to emergency room after an antifan blasted her with a mixture of soy sauce, white vinegar and red pepper powder in a water gun. These incidents led to the group disbandment alongside various rumours. Lee Hyori also talked about these incidents by Sechs Kies and HOT fans. "These anti fans lined up for hours during a fansign and asked what's my name and after i said my name is Lee Hyori they threw eggs to my face". Professor Lee Nayoung of JoongAng University said "There has been constant threats against female singers, actresses but it's not widely publicized because it acts like a stigma itself". Professor Lee continues by saying "The desire of posessions and the desire of belonging to oneself are different according to genders". "Men are very violent unless their desire to make the woman theirs are met. They try to dominate women sometimes via violence or even murder this is because if the stereotypes that men have against women". In the meantime. she also pointed out that these men have low gender sensitivity by treating female celebrities like toys dolls or objects. Professor Lee said "they have to acknowledge that these female celebrities and girl groups are human too they have rights to live independently with or without many men" "Celebrities themselves needs to adress the issue and publicize it." http://www.womennews.co.kr/news/115553

Rose. 4,207
It's upsetting that aside from companies usually treating their artists like shit, they have to deal with antis and sasaeng fans afterwards. Being a female K-Pop idol is rough.

양 지 10,015
well i'm not an expert in translating from Korean so ah you translated this? don't mind me being nitpicky! you missed some punctuation points so it just threw me off a bit and the article itself seems to have been written haphazardly The flow could have been better and there are information that does not relate to the article's main point (the part about GGs being harassed by boy group fans makes no sense in this article since the main conclusion is how some men have a lot of problems with female celebs and the terrible consequences of that attitude). Also a quote like "There has been constant threats against female singers, actresses but it's not widely publicized because it acts like a stigma itself" could have been expanded upon a lot. Not trying to be nitpicky or anything but I'm just saying this cause an issue like this deserves to be explained in a well written piece so that people can become more informed. SK does not seem to care about their idols at all and it's horrible and people should actually do something about it. We all know this all happens (esp the part about female idols being harassed for even speaking with male idols) but we just talk about it and nobody does anything to solve the issue. OIaM 1,360
But some of those violent examples the article cited are female fans of boy groups hating on female idols because of dating rumors right? How did it end with simply a condemnation of men as a gender treating females as objects of desire? Please don't make this a gender issue, both men and women are capable of violent expression of their desires. This should really be about putting down pricks that are making threats online and ensuring that they cannot carry out those threats in reality. I think you missed the point of the article it talks about Female celebrities getting less than human treatments and being terrorized by both men and women. The last paragraph refers to recent attacks commited by men. It also highlights that they also received threats of assaults and other forms by fangirls of boygroups in the past

But tbh the article read like: "girl groups suffer a lot of attacks especially because men are intrinsically violent against women", turning it into a gender issue. When it really should be "idol groups suffer a lot of attacks due to the complex emotions of desire and jealousy they elicit in fans. We need to discuss / educate people on how to deal with these feelings and what would constitute inappropriate conduct in the Cyberspace". Anw just my 2cents.
