Japan Reportedly Planning 2018 Jâ€dorama New Adaptation of Hana Yori Dango with Female Lead Hirose Suzu

There will likely be not just one but two remakes in 2018 of the hit shoujo manga Hana Yori Dango (Boys Before Flowers), and it’s going to be from the two most successful versions out there. Taiwan’s own producer of the 2001 Meteor Garden is remaking another Taiwan drama adaptation next year and just the potential casting call alone is garnering tons of interest. Now comes news that Japan is planning a new dorama adaptation of HanaDan scheduled for Spring 2018, which would be an intervening thirteen years since the mega hit version aired in 2005 with Inoue Mao, Matsumoto Jun, Oguri Shun, Matsuda Shota, and Abe Tsuyoshi.

Unlike the 2001 TW version which looks so dated and hard to rewatch now, the 2005 HanaDan remains adorably fun to rewatch so I’m less clamoring for Japan to launch a new version. With that said, all the leads have grown up, Shun is married and has two kids even, so it does hit home how much time has passed and perhaps a new generation can have their own HanaDan. The 2018 version of HanaDan has reportedly already selected as female lead super popular young actress Hirose Suzu best known as the lead in the Chihayafuru movie series and also the romance movie Your Lie in April.

I’ll always love HanaDan 2005 but don’t think its so sacrosanct that it a new version can’t ever match up, or that I can’t one day like a new version for different reasons. The male leads names being tossed out for the 2018 F4 include currently popular young male leads Yamazaki Kento (love him!), Suda Masaki, and Nomura Shuhei. Early from Japanese netizens leans towards negative reaction with this news, seeing Suzu as not grounded and down to earth as much as Inoue Mao perfectly captured Makino Tsukushi’s attitude, and also not seeing the need for a remake as the 2000’s HanaDan ended on a super happy ending for the OTP with the wedding in the SP.

I'll give the Japanese remake a chance, but to me, Inoue Mao will always be Makino Tsukushi, Jun Matsumoto will always be Domyouji, Oguri Shun will always be Rui, Matsuda Shota will always be Sojiro, and Tsuyoshi Abe will always be Akira. Inoue was absolutely perfect as Makino. I haven't even seen the Taiwanese version but Goo Hye Sun's and Zheng Shuang's portrayals of the Korean and (unofficial) mainland China versions, respectively, of Tsukushi don't even come close to Inoue's portrayal.

Hirose Suzu seems a tad too pretty for the role of Tsukushi, though, especially since in one of the episodes (I think it was when F4 was helping Tsukushi prepare for the Miss Teen of Japan contest), Domyouji said something along the lines of how she had nothing going for her looks wise.

She is like the most popular teen actress (98'er) in Japan currently.

I really hope this is true because I would watching it just for her rlytearpls.png

Honestly it's time to stop I was a fan of it when I was younger because I was blind and I'm sure that shit

probably flew back in the late 90s but the story line and it's male leads are abusive and superficial

and it has 6ish remakes too many.

Tbh lowkey alarming if a storyline like that can get so many remake and STILL keep getting them.

lol yeah, even though of the actresses that have played as the female lead were all pretty on their own right I think Suzu would be the prettiest Tsukushi.

The Taiwanese was the first Boys Over Flowers adaptation but it's pretty dated to watch in modern times so it's understandable why they decided to go for a remake, especially with a prolific producer helming it. But the Japanese version though is old too it is watchable now and it's still to this day the best adaptation, even though I have more feelings for the Taiwanese one because I have watched it when I was younger.

I am still excited for both modern remakes of these countries and it will be inevitable they will be compared since both countries are aiming for a 2018 release.

This series is seriously gonna have 200 different versions and double remakes by each country soon idontthinksobetchplz.png

Personally I think Suzu is too pretty to be Tsukushi. Tsukushi was supposed to be average in looks, and while Mao is pretty herself, she was able to look the part of Tsukushi.

I wonder who the F4 will be lol. But I'd like to see Kentaro Sakaguchi as one of them. I can kind of see him being Akira or Souchirou.

can we stop putting him in everything. his acting is wooden af.

I thought he did good in Sukina hito ga iru koto.

tbh, I respect that it's beloved and all but I personally couldn't get into the original drama at all because I found it so creepy and unpleasant

even if I did like it, I don't understand why we need endless remakes of it. can we have new, original dramas instead please?

but Hana Yori Dango ran from 2005-2008, not the late 90s. Even Meteor Garden was made in 2001. The manga may have been made in the 90s, but the dramas were made in the 00s.

omg this. I loved the show when i was like 12 but i tried to go for a rewatch a month back and all i could see was how messed up that stuff is. Like Makino is almost reduced to licking Domyouji's shoes and getting raped at one point in the name of bullying by him. It's disgusting. And then later she ends up loving him for all of eternity. Like no. This isn't what should be selling.
