Jackie Chan's JJCC Attracts US Media Prior To Debut

While upcoming K-pop groups always stir excitement from traditional fans of K-Pop, it is still quite rare that mainstream American media takes notice.

Some music outlets, such as Billboard, have started to cover K-Pop news more, but it is uncommon for K-Pop to appear in traditional papers. But Jackie Chan's soon-to-debut JJCC (pronounced Double JC) has been attracting attention from all over, including major news outlets like the New York Post, which in turn accredited the article to the Associated Press.

What is even more uncommon is for American press to notice a K-Pop group prior to debut. However, because of Jackie Chan's presence in the international film industry and his involvement in the group, JJCC already has been noticed in the United States.

The New York Post article discussed JJCC and Jackie Chan's involvement, as well as his Mandopop career during the 1990's. The Post article also included some K-Pop videos, but the video that the playlist begins with is actually the Japanese version of SHINee's "Replay."

JJCC has gained a lot of attention because of Jackie Chan's connection, even prior to the release of the members' bios. The Jackie Chan Group Korea has only just recently revealed who the members are, and there is already a lot of anticipation building. Four members, leader SimBa, E.co, Eddy, and Sam-Cheong are Korean, while Prince Mak is Chinese Australian.

Every once in a while, some group or artist is heralded as the bringer of K-Pop to the Americas, ranging from HyunA who is performing at this year's SXSW and Girls' Generation's appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman to Psy's "Gangnam Style" or G-Dragon's general presence in fashion and music. There are increasingly more concerts in North and South America and some shows gain media coverage, like when the New York Times wrote an article about SMTown NY, but K-Pop's presence still has a lot of room for growth.

The fact that the New York Post covered JJCC even before many Asian media outlets did may be a sign of the group's popularity. Jackie Chan's vote of confidence, and his standing as one of the highest profile Asians in Hollywood, makes JJCC yet another possible harbinger of K-Pop to the Americas.

Since the group has yet to debut, there is no saying what will actually happen to JJCC and what its affect on the Korean Wave will be. If Jackie Chan's presence keeps influencing their popularity, JJCC may very well be one of the most popular K-Pop groups in the near future.

Although JJCC is set to debut this month, Korean outlets haven't reported an official date. The New York Post, however, has said that JJCC will debut on March 24.

Jackie Chan reportedly managing new K-Pop band

Various Chinese media outlets are claiming that the actor is a long time fan of the genre, so much so that he has spent several years ‘grooming’ new pop band JJCC

According to reports, Jackie Chan has formed a boy band. The Chinese action movie star is said to be turning his hand to pop music, recruiting, training and apparently producing a K-Pop quintet called JJCC.

Chinese media outlets, including the state newswire Xinhua, say the actor is a long-time fan of the genre: “Jackie Chan has always been overflowing with good words about K-Pop – after he saw K-Pop’s unlimited potential and possibility for development, he spent several years grooming JJCC,†reported Xinhua, which added that “their appearance is very handsome, and they’ve received individual training on their personality and stunts.â€

South Korean music is popular across Asia and this project gestures toward that fact: besides its link to Chan’s monogram, JJCC’s name is intentionally a doubled acronym of the phrase “joining culturesâ€.

“As formed and trained under the ambitious theme, ‘The world can be conquered when Asia unites,’ JJCC will amaze the world with their different music and a charm that has never existed before,†Sha-sha Lee, CEO of the Jackie Chan Group South Korea, told Korean journalists.
Chan is personally managing the band, Lee said. Uncorroborated reports say he helped plan the concept, scouted the members, and played a role in completing their debut album. Besides one Australian-Chinese singer, the rest of JJCC are Korean, and all were described as “triple threats†(though “quadruple†would be more accurate) who can sing, dance, rap and act.

Although this could be Chan’s first foray into the international pop scene, the 59-year-old has a long history with the Chinese music industry. Having studied at the Peking Opera School, he began releasing Canto-pop and Mando-pop songs in 1984; since then has issued more than 25 albums, including many of his own soundtracks.

JJCC’s as-yet unnamed full-length will be released on 24 May, first in South Korea and then in China.

Jackie Chan's K-Pop Boy Band Readies Debut Album

The group, JJCC, is the Hong Kong action star's first attempt as a K-pop band manager, part of his efforts "to bring together Asian cultures."

SEOUL -- JJCC, a K-pop group managed by Jackie Chan, will announce its debut album March 24 in South Korea.

The group is comprised of four Koreans and one Chinese-Australian, all in their early twenties. One member, Eddy, is known for his cooking skills and has competed on the cooking challenge show Master Chef Korea.

The band's name -- aka. Double JC -- is said to be a homage to Chan and the 59-year-old action star's efforts "to bring together Asian cultures."

Chan personally took part in auditioning the band members and will also oversee their activities, according to Sha-Sha Lee, CEO of Jackie Chan Group South Korea. The members are known to be capable in singing, rapping, and dancing as well as acting.

This is not the first time Chan has supported Korean talent. Several years ago he made headlines for helping Steve Seungjun Yoo, whose K-pop career ended due to controversy over mandatory military service for Korean men, make his acting debut in China.

While best known for his kung fu roles, Chan has released Mandarin pop albums in the 1990s and also trained in singing at the China Drama Academy before entering the film industry.

JJCC is set to perform in a charity concert being hosted by Chan in Beijing next month. EXO, an internationally popular K-pop band with members who are Chinese, is also set to appear along with actress Kim Hee-sun, who starred opposite Chan in the 2005 martial arts film The Myth.

Jackie Chan’s K-Pop ‘Boy Band’ to Release Debut Album This Month

The martial arts master and action superstar is now managing a male idol group.

Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan, internationally recognized for his mastery of kung fu and refusal to use a stunt double, is gearing up for the launch of his latest project – but it isn’t another Rush Hour sequel, or even an action movie at all.

A K-pop group managed by Chan – and bearing his namesake – will release its debut album on March 24 before a subsequent launch in China.

JJCC (or Double JC), a combination of Chan’s initials and his determination to “join cultures,†consists of five male idols in their early 20s. Four are South Korean and one is Australian-Chinese. The group represents Chan’s first attempt to enter the world of Korean pop, a chart-topping musical genre across Asia, but it might also have a deeper meaning for the politically outspoken celebrity and active member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“Chan was involved in auditioning the band members and will manage the group personally.†Sha-sha Lee, CEO of the Jackie Chan Group South Korea, told AP. “All five members are triple threats who can sing, dance, rap, and might act alongside Chan on the silver screen in the future.â€

Apart from recruitment and management, the 59-year-old actor has also been heavily involved in the band’s training process. His hands-on approach likely stems from a childhood dream of becoming a pop star, which was overshadowed by his rapid success as an action hero.

“Jackie Chan is classically trained in vocals and has actively performed Mandopop, as well as Cantopop,†wroteKpopStarz. “He is able to lend a unique perspective to the K-Pop industry due to the fact that he is not only a successful actor, but has also contributed to the soundtracks of his films… With his fame established firmly in the West, specifically in the United States, it will be interesting to see if Jackie Chan and JJCC will be able to further penetrate the American pop music marketâ€

Earlier this week, DailyKpopNews revealed JJCC’s leader as Oh Jong Seok. Nicknamed the “Cooking Rapper,†Oh gained a following in South Korea after appearing on the culinary reality show Master Chef Korea. He was born in the U.S. but has lived in South Korea for the past eight years.

“[Oh] is very vocal about his interest [in becoming] a chef even though he was training to be an idol during the show and expressed his plan to build a restaurant for his father,†the site reported, adding that other members also possessed individual talents outside of singing and dancing.

Chan may have a winning formula for uniting Chinese and Korean talent, but his choice to pursue a K-pop alliance over a J-pop alliance may be a reflection of his political beliefs. In 2012, he shared his point of view on the heated Senkaku-Diaoyu territorial dispute with members of the Taiwanese media:

“The Diaoyu Islands definitely belong to China,†said Chan. “I wish I was Superman, so I could pull the islands closer.â€

In 2009, Chan also insisted that Japan, Taiwan and the U.S. have “too much freedom.â€

I'm totally looking forward for more videos of them! *^* Eddy was the one who caught my eyes from the beginning haha~ And he happens to be the lead singer (how come I always fall for the lead singers OTL ) XDDD

I hope they'll bring out an even more powerful song~ I think that the chorus of the song is quite…weak? But it showcases their vocals so I'm totally fine with that keke~
