I got some very bad news.... in 3 months I'm gonna be out of a job.

The place I work at is shutting down. The GM informed everyone that in 3 months we will be shut down completely. I'm sad, I'm angry, I'm upset, I'm in a whirlwind of emotions right now. I don't want to go through closing because its gonna be rough and tbh I don't even know if we will be offered anything. If they will offer us possible transfer option to a different location, or if we will even get severance pay. I don't know anything at this point other than I'm gonna be jobless soon cause those 3 months are gonna fly by quick.

I know its not gonna be an easy time finding a new job because from Oct-Feb that's the lay off season in the hospitality industry. I just don't wanna go back to the starting point and become extremely depressed cause I've been unemployed for such a long time and its not a good feeling, to be a person of a particular age and be jobless and having to be financially dependent on your parents its kinda pathetic and sad.

I don't know what I'm going to do, I don't even know where to start to be quite honest cause I've never been in a situation like this. What I hate the most right now is the tension and the environment at my place. We were told that we just have to carry on & that its business as usual, but its not. Co-workers who have been there for years have been speculating that the place will close down sooner or later, no one expected it to shut down so quickly. I kinda had a feeling that something will happen based on how the business was in the last couple of months.

Has anyone gone through this before? How did you handle it?

Start looking for work now! Don't wait until 3 months. This has not happened to me because i work in chain places but look for work ASAP

I am, I've already been calling and emailing people that I know who work in the industry.

I'm going to give my old tourism professor a call tomorrow. We became very friendly during the semester I had him as my teacher. I know he has connections so I'll see if he knows of any places that are hiring right now.

I'm currently jobless too and I can imagine how you feel... Be strong and I recommend you find another work before it's too late. It's hard but it will be better this way.

I'm glad they told us in advance because I was about to sign a lease for my apartment and that would have been a nightmare! I had an appointment tomorrow with the real estate agent to go over the lease and sign it.

Man that sucks, I feel like I'm in a similar situation though I do have a job right now but I'm trying to find a better one and it's so fucking hard. I hate looking for jobs because it gets me super depressed.

Good luck

Even though its hard finding a job, its still easier for younger people. I have co-workers who are in their late 50s and even early 60s who have been working at that place for 20-30 years. Can you imagine having to find a job at that age because you cannot retire yet?

The good thing for them is that most of them are union employees so the union will find them a job, bad thing is they are starting from the bottom. You do not want to be a housekeeper who is last on the schedule cause you get the worst shifts, the worst rooms and you barely get any work, and if you're on call you can forget about it.

That suckkkkssss, my mom is in a union but if she lost her job in this situation she'd still keep her tenure. Being older at least you have a lot a experience right? Since a lot of the job postings that I see want like 4 - 5 + years of experience so they could start anew. So yea they are older but they should be able to find something?

True with age come wisdom.......so they say,  but you know what a lot of people have this union mentality of "its' not my job" if you ask them to do anything.

Also I've spoken with a lot of people in my department and they wouldn't want to look for a non union job because of the $ and the benefits but IMO in most cases union screws their members over because you pay such high union fees and then when shit hits the fan you must start from the beginning.

It happens a lot around me since we're in media business and media kicks people like nothing. What we always do is always looking for a new job whenever possible. Don't wait until 3 months, make your CV and start looking for job right now. Companies might will call you fast or few months later, staring as early as possible is good. If they call you for interview, then took a day off and go.

It's great that they tell you 3 months in advance, you have enough time to be prepared.

Best of luck!

that sucks for your older co workers tho :( many people at that age around me usually do small business

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. It's definitely tough and nerve-wracking knowing that you will be soon out of a job. Job searching can be very time-consuming as well.

I was in a somewhat similar situation. I was laid off along with a bunch of other employees as the company I was working for was having serious financial difficulties. I honestly felt pretty depressed during that time period. I was eventually able to find work through a temp agency and later on took on a full-time internship opportunity. Are there any temp agencies or internships that you can apply for in your industry?

I'd also recommend going on the site "Ask A Manager" (http://www.askamanager.org/). She gives absolutely amazing advice for resumes, cover letters, interviews, etc that you may find to be very helpful as you are job searching.

I don't know if it's different in Canada but union jobs tend to pay more, better benefits and you get protected if shit hits the fan but you still get benefits with pretty much any full time job under the private sector so it's not a complete loss. It's weird that they wouldn't be willing to make the change if they have to start from the bottom anyways.

speaking of jobs I feel like my resume needs a revamp I honestly hate writing them. do you know of any good sites to use for templates etc

Go and find work now. It's really hard to find Job if you wait it out.

I have experienced waiting it out and was out of work for 6 months after i resigned. It's Hell!
