Do you think an Indian/South Asian idol group could become as popular as kpop?

Well, India had a few experiments with making an idol group but they weren't stable/successful. As India's commercial music industry is mostly film music oriented, the structure to support a pop scene was missing then.

Aasma, the co-ed band, were created by Channel V. (A pretty nice interview http://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/report-we-never-plan-to-split-aasma-5008)

They had this cute song

Viva, the girlgroup by Channel V, were a huge success initially. They had great voices too, great everything tbh. (An illuminating interview http://www.vagabomb.com/Remember-Channel-Vs-VIVA-Heres-What-Happened-to-Indias-First-Girl-Band/)

their debut song was amazing

If now, there was a new idol group created, whether co-ed or boyband or girlgroup, do you think they would have a chance making it big internationally - like on a kpop scale or bigger? If so, why? If not, why?

OP note: I wuvved Viva so much!

Hmm I'm not sure. The second video definitely gives me BoA "ID Peace B" vibes but they all look a little old to be "idols". I think it is possible though, just depends if they get that marketability right with a blend of their own(which is why people like Kpop, because it still has a very Korean feel to it). I've seen some seriously gorgeous Indian people and we already have a few SEA idols in kpop so that's no question. I guess it's just a matter of money and infrastructure.

Our actorss like Shahid Kapoor etc are great dancers and stage performers apart from being really talented actors. So they sort of fulfill the purpose of idols. Priyanka Chopra and others release albums. maybe someday, but I don't see it happening here any time soon.

There are very few Indian groups with mainstream popularity in India, because most Indians don't usually check out music from artists(except a few),unless they're movie OSTs.

It's the same reason why even kpop will never break into India like the rest of Asia.I think India cares about American/British groups though, and I'd assume that 1D did well because of Zayn who's of South Asian descent.

Overall,Indians don't expect their singers to be good looking or dance, they have actors for that,so an idol group would be useless.

However,India spends a lot of money every year on movies, and that's what provides all the national hits.India's equivalent to kpop is bollywood, which does well internationally and domestically.I actually think it's debatable which one(kpop or bollywood) is more popular internationally. We also have to remember that Bollywood already has a huge audience,so Indian companies don't aim to spread the 'Indian wave'.

I think whether they would get popular or not would depend on their management, but I'm sure an Indian idol group will have something to offer that would be different from the norm, because India is such a mixing pot of cultures. Something unique could come out of it.

There is already bollywood or other film industries for all those sparkles, an idol group would change nothing Imo

Regardless of that some punjabi rappers are doing quite well on their own but I'm kinda not into this idea of idols groups in India
