In a battle against great odds (or fake news!), the smallest victories can turn the tables and begin to bring about real change. After days of fighting Daehan Daily through underground broadcasts and quiet investigations, our good guys are finally ready to enact their climactic reversal. Will they be able to expose the seedy underbelly of the country’s most trusted news source at last? Or will Chief Gu and his cohorts outmaneuver them again?

EPISODE 15 RECAP

The killer enters Moo-young’s hospital room to murder him with a fatal injection, but Moo-young manages to wrest it from him, and knock the killer down with some fancy flying kicks. Killer is skilled but Moo-young is fighting for his life, and he manages to pin Killer down and the turn the needle on him. As he glares down at Killer, Moo-young asks whom he works for and why he killed Chul-ho. Killer just grins and kicks Moo-young off.

This time, Killer shows no mercy and Moo-young begins to lose the fight. In the end, Killer has Moo-young on his knees with the syringe inches from his neck, when Moo-young begins to scream. The focus shifts to the patient lying on another bed in the room… and we see that it’s also Moo-young. With a violent jerk, Moo-young wakes from his dream and looks around the room full of patients. (Gaaah! But the fight was so good!) Moo-young tears the IV line from his arm and struggles to process what just happened.

Paralegal Park asks So-ra if she intends to keep the truth about the killer’s tattoo from Moo-young. So-ra asks him, “What if the case I’m investigating, which I believe is only right to dig up until the very bottom, only ends up hurting the person I cherish the most? How do you think you’d feel?†Paralegal Park tells her that she isn’t someone who would run away from the truth because she’s afraid to get hurt, and that you can only heal after you’ve understood the full truth.

Reporter Na stands in Daehan Daily’s lobby and frets over the decision he needs to make, when Intern Ji-won comes along. He ribs her as usual, but then stops her to ask what she would do if she were offered a full-time position with the paper in exchange for a false article.

Intern Ji-won says with idealistic fervor that some people might not need to sacrifice something to take a stand, but they’re different because they’re journalists. She says she wouldn’t have become a journalist in the first place if she were going to sell out like that. Her upright speech somehow ends with her fangirling over how handsome Seok-min looks in his slippers at work. Hahaha. Reporter Na is miffed at her idol worshipping of Seok-min, and huffs that he’s 3 centimeters taller, heh. But he takes her words seriously. Alone in the staff bathroom, he tells his reflection: “Let’s get scolded while I still can. I should still protect my pride.â€

He walks into the Splash Team headquarters and heads straight for Seok-min’s office. He tells his senior that he’ll write the next day’s article himself. Seok-min asks if he’s sure he doesn’t want to quit his job, which prompts Reporter Na to say that he can hit him until he feels better.

Seok-min isn’t in a forgiving mood, and tells Reporter Na that he hates sycophants like him who do everything to attain success. Reporter Na looks almost tearful as he realizes that he’s lost Seok-min’s respect completely.

But Seok-min does agree to let him write the next day’s article… but on Seok-min’s personal (unbugged) laptop. When Reporter Na hesitantly asks why, Seok-min intimidates him into avoiding an answer.

Oh my god, it’s so good to finally have a solid win on our heroes’ side! Yes, the retrial hasn’t even begun yet, but it’s clear that for Seon-woo the real heartbreak was in never being allowed his day in court. And with Moo-young and Seok-min’s clever manipulation of Daehan Daily, it’s unlikely that Chief Gu would be trying to ruin Seon-woo’s case again. I’m satisfied that this plot line has given all it can. Now, the rest of Seon-woo’s case should get resolved behind the scenes, so our Davids can move on to tackle the real Goliaths.

I found it adorable that Reporter Na is so hard up for confidantes that he had to resort to taking advice from a newbie intern. His jealousy over Ji-won’s crush on Seok-min is cute too. But mostly, I was genuinely moved by Reporter Na’s struggle this week. He was in an untenable position and a lesser man would have quit before admitting (on the front page!) that he had falsified news. I have high hopes from this character as well as this actor.

It’s also a relief to have Moo-young and So-ra’s distrust resolved so quickly. They had promised to work together for this one case and keep their doubts about each other at bay. But by now, I think both have glimpsed enough of the other’s life to know that they can trust each other. I’m glad that this felt organic, instead of being presented in an Ah-ha! moment.

falsify1516-00205.jpg

The only gripe I have is with Seok-min claiming credit for Seon-woo’s faked death. He most certainly had not planned that! The most he can say is that he was handed the perfect situation to manipulate after Moo-young prevented a near tragedy. But I really enjoyed Seok-min’s mastermind moment in the Splash Team headquarters when he orchestrated the printing of the changed article by anticipating all the failsafes and disabling them. I don’t care how unrealistic that was, it was brilliant to watch!

So, now we’re halfway through and we seem to be running short on bad guys. Chief Gu’s authority has suffered a major blow with his paper being discredited. Lawyer Jo knows that So-ra is looking into his firm. Lieutenant Jeon is dead, Prosecutor Im is likely to stay out of the picture for a while, and Reporter Na has joined the side of angels. We have a potential new villain in Nam Kang-myung, and there is the killer, but they lack the layers of Chief Gu or the subtle internal conflict of Lieutenant Jeon or Reporter Na. Therefore, Falsify needs to raise their stakes again and give our heroes a real challenge to sink their teeth into next.

“Falsify†Holds No. 1 Spot In Its Time Slot For 5 Consecutive Weeks

Falsify.jpg&key=b9cf584d557e7f776990b1af

Although the ratings for “Falsify†dropped a little this week, the SBS drama is continuing its dominance of the Monday-Tuesday time slot.

On August 22, Nielsen Korea reported that the recent two episodes of “Falsify†recorded a nationwide average of 9.7 percent and 11.2 percent viewership ratings. This is a drop from last week, where it recorded a high of 12.2 percent.

Nonetheless, this is the fifth consecutive week that “Falsify†has held the No. 1 spot in its time slot. KBS’s “School 2017†recorded a viewership rating of 4.7 percent, while MBC’s “The King Loves†recorded 6.2 percent for its first episode this week and 7.0 percent for its second.

“Falsify,†also known as “Distorted,†tells the story of journalists working to expose the truth in a corrupt society.

"Falsify" Namgoong Min sees Kang Shin-hyo and Eom Ji-won gets kidnapped

photo880658.jpg

On the latest episode of the SBS drama "Falsify", Koo Tae-won (Moon Sung-keun) and Lee Seok-min(Yoo Joon-sang) thought of Han Cheol-ho (Oh Jung-se). Koo Tae-won made Cheol-ho write a report led him to his death. Seok-min tried to belive Cheol-ho but couldn't.

Moo-yeong (Namgoong Min) held hands with So-ra (Eom Ji-won) and used all possible means to find the person who killed Cheol-ho. Moo-yeong remembered the key person to the past looked for a cigarette and this was a very important sign. Moo-yeong and So-ra met the murderer.

So-ra had evidence in her hand and was chased by the killer. So-ra almost died but managed to save herself.

Meanwhile, Koo Tae-won longed for revenge against Jo Yeong-gi (Ryu Seung-soo). He asked Jo Yeong-ki to rearrange his wife's name to the top of the list but Yeong-gi told him, "You should have brought information to ask me something like that. You were our alternative not the answer. Prove to me that you are the best alternative".

Koo Tae-won told him through gritted teeth, "Remember this moment that you insulted me and I'll see you again soon".

Koo Tae-won made another plan. He left crucial evidence for the splash team. He claimed the splash team was a buffer and that responsibility could be handed over even after their target was reached.

The three ground-wave dramas are slowing down. According to Nielson Korea, the SBS drama "Falsify"came in at 10.2% and 11.6% on its latest two episodes.

It's in the lead, but it hasn't been able to break its own record of 12.6%.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Falsify" Episodes 17-18

photo881132.jpg&key=c99b56f8e89f54037376

Heroes and villains alike are starting to get bolder with their decisions in "Falsify". Moo-yeong finally learns of a painful truth necessary for moving forward and So-ra has a close call when she pushes the villains' buttons a bit too hard. Tae-won is feeling the heat as well, reminding us that no pawn is above betrayal from their masters.

It is good to see that Moo-yeong (Namgoong Min) is opening up to Seok-min (Yoo Joon-sang) and learning from his mistakes, which will hopefully help him maintain focus from now on. Each case brings our team closer to the culprits and the closer our heroes get to blowing the cover of these "elders", the more dangerous things will get. Moo-yeong takes a big hit regarding his brother, but Cheol-ho's (Oh Jung-se) wish to make things right will further motivate him.

photo881131.jpg&key=d6101b7731e6903c2348photo881130.jpg&key=1f53fea6d5d47a01bf23

While I welcome the increasing, tangible danger for our Team Good, "Falsify" does give me a scare with So-ra (Eom Ji-won) in these episodes. I have seen many a promising woman character given the damsel-in-distress treatment as a plot device and for the sake of elevating a leading man. In Korean drama, this trope is sadly overused. My relief when So-ra saved herself was indescribable. The scene is still suspenseful and her understandable panic provides drama, but without mistreating her character. Well played, "Falsify".

Our heroes are not the only ones feeling the pressure, however. I am glad to see Tae-won's (Moon Sung-keun) wife used as a motivation, rather than an excuse. His villainy is therefore not dismissed due to her illness, but it is given dimension. This is much better than having someone who is wicked just to serve as an antagonist, because a humanized villain is more engaging. The more Tae-won fights for someone who would never approve of this battle, the closer he will get to the downfall foreshadowed by the distrust of his employees.

photo881129.jpg&key=7f0bb09f652685ad0053photo881128.jpg&key=acd5dd6e9a144ffd6bdb

I wish the rest of our villains had some nuance to them as well, although I do appreciate that Jeon Chan-soo's (Jeong Man-sik) talk of smoking during his demise becomes something useful. It was an odd and overly dramatic element of his death, but it makes sense now. It is fortunate that the characters in "Falsify" actively gather evidence, because a series largely about journalism would feel too silly otherwise.

While I do not expect character development for other antagonists, I do wonder if Tattoo Man (Kang Shin-hyo) is being used through a personal need like Tae-won. Most importantly, I wonder if Tae-won will be our endgame villain. The Splash Team has to finish Cheol-ho's work after all. I suppose we will have a better grasp of where the story is going as the new case develops.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Falsify" Episodes 19-20

photo881162.jpg&key=776eb0d2faff15452dd2

Plans change and allegiances crumble as Tae-won finds himself cornered by heroes and villains alike. The man begins a mysterious game as our Team Good tries to make sense of what is going on and find more allies after So-ra's attack. A major breakthrough happens when a helpful hand from the past points Seok-min to the right direction, but Moo-yeong's involvement and personal goals may become a problem.

I never paid attention to Cheol-ho's (Oh Jung-se) mistakes, because they could have easily happened from someone who is under great pressure and in a hurry. They looked like convenient ammunition for the leads to use against the villains; a small, albeit obvious logical flaw acting as a plot device. It is exciting to see yet another seemingly insignificant element turn into a twist after Jeon Chan-soo's (Jeong Man-sik) cigarette trail.

photo881161.jpg&key=95288b2a3a9bfa8ab288photo881160.jpg&key=dd0d47ed60bb85fb9d77

The series is very smart to withhold information from viewers, because it makes the revelation of their true nature more entertaining later on. It also works, because Korean dramas usually have major problems with plot logic and viewers are therefore used to letting things which do not make sense slide. The unknown is also scary and so Tae-won's (Moon Sung-keun) latest move has gravity, because it makes us fear the truth Splash Team will discover, as much as we may want it found.

Although the drama masterfully connects these previously unrelated dots for us, I do spot something in these episodes which stands out in a bad way. If Seok-min (Yoo Joon-sang) knew everything that we are shown about Cheol-ho and the time leading up to his death, why did he not look into his demise? Cheol-ho begged him not to, but Seok-min's original refusal was due to anger and disbelief, not due to Cheol-ho's words. This feels like a plot hole, because the signs ignored by someone as perceptive as Seok-min were too glaring.

photo881159.jpg&key=86f8d27f955fa006e6acphoto881158.jpg&key=9739a583fbcc28a52f6f

The possibility of a romance between So-ra (Eom Ji-won) and Moo-yeong (Namgoong Min) may be an issue as well. Romances can be great, but in Korean drama they tend to take over and often shift the focus of stories where there is no built-in room for them. I am not worried too much yet, but there are more important things happening which do not leave room for love triangles, if Jin-woo's (Jung Hee-tae) reactions are anything to go by.

I hope Moo-yeong can keep his sudden crisis-sparked crush at bay while the current story is forming, especially now that we have such an interesting conflict with Seok-min. As for the latter and the changes happening in the narrative as the past is revealed, I hope the writer can keep a tight grip on things so that their internal logic keeps working well.
