I will never get why actors are seen as more reputable than idols in Korea. At the end of the day, they're both entertainers

Seriously, at the end of the day, their jobs are the same = providing entertainment to the audience.

I really don't understand why actors are more respectable than idols. A lot of the popular Korean actors are ham actors and only have huge fandoms because of how oppable they are - what difference does that make to an idol who is fangirled over his charm?

They make more money, that's all. Actually, that's not all. The visual levels are considered higher and there's more critical acclaim for actors in the world. That's all grounded in Koreans liking money, good looks, and having that global underdog mentality.

I think most of them fall in love with the characters scripted in those dramas and movies so they might have naively assumed the actors and actresses themselves have the same personalities as the characters and thereby attributing higher worth to them.

However, I always think performers, such as musical actors, actresses and idols who do live stages and performances deserve more respect because if anything goes awry, they have to improvise on the spot or deal with the repercussions there and then while actors and actresses can do one take after another until they perfected the shots for the scenes.

Um its same in every country

In USA an actor like Brad Pitt would be considered more reputable than Justin Bieber or 1D coz the latter appeals to younger people especially teens

Why are you singling Korea out?

That is something i cannot understand until now LMAO. In my place, idol or actor always called as "artist", so when idol played a role or actor/actress make a album nobody will see that as a problem ಠ_ಠ

The first time i learn Korean culture, i see an translated article about idol of a group take a role and the comment is just ಠ_ಠ

SK actors are basically like d-listers and lower in USA... to think that they put them over a pedestal over world stars like BB and BTS and SNSD is just LMAO

The amount of misinformed entitlement in your comment. SK actors like Choi Min Sik, Bae Doona are reknowned all over the world. Just coz you haven't heard of them doesn't make them any lesser than Hollywood actors smh........

Those actors you mentioned are veteran stars though. They've established themselves so much with a huge ton of filmography and won Oscars and all that jazz. Justin Bieber is more respected than a lot of actors who appear on the Hallmark Channel or Lifetime Movies.

Sure Brad Pitt is more respected than 1D, but Beyonce is just as respected as Brad Pitt.

Korea's pretty different about this.

OMG LOL and that is NOT who knetz talk about when they go on their "idols are inferior" tirades. They mean actresses like... Hwang Jungeum which are certainly not known all over the world and do not have the talents of Bae Doona. hahahahahaha

And to further back up my point, Bae Doona gets paid more because she is an actress who acts outside of kdramas on SBS and such. SBS actresses get about 30k$ per episode. To contrast that with d-listers, Supernatural actors get 175k$ per episode on a shit CW show with relatively terrible numbers compared to how high percentage kdramas can sometimes get.

I acknowledge world star actors like Rain, Bae Doona, Kim Min Hee, but they are not who knets talk about haha. I'm almost positive Bae Doona gets more recognition outside of Korean than in Korea.

Not at all, SK has plenty of veteran international award winning actors like song kang ho, bae doona and others so I don't see any difference

They deserve the respect although Big Bang is respected rightfully as a veteran group

And we complain when Knetz comment like that, but your comment doesnt make you any better. Instead of circlejerking over actors vs idols why not respect both, you dont have to put anyone down like some knetz does.

And most of the tirades Knetz go on about is how "ahhh this idol looks like a squid beside this actress" or "actors truly are on a different level their aura is superior" kind of spazzing

Also how a lot of idols abandon idolhood because even they believe being actors is better when you have Japan where top stars like Arashi balance their idolhood and their (multiawarded) acting careers.

Most of them can't even act for shit

true,  Im not into kdramas  but I watched a few in the past and the acting was so fucking bad

In the US and here is south america music stars are not considered inferior to actors at all

The difference is bigger in korea you always see netizens saying idols dont have the actors"visuals" and they think actors are on another level

This is obvious when you see idols perform in award shows in front of actors the people in the audience look bored and show no reaction.

this doesnt happen here. If a popular music artist performs in front of actors they dont treat them like they are less than them,

I think no one is hating on actors though? We're just talking about how some actors are good and some are bad, and they should be measured by their skill, not because they're 'actors'.

Idols go through hardwork themselves as well, and deserve the same kind of respect as idols. Even Big Bang, a respected group, gets comments like "they're not idols, they're artists". It's as if the whole idol concept cannot be taken seriously, but I believe you can embrace idolhood and still be very respected especially if you have the skill/star power to back it up.

But this post is about those types who comment like that, so I don't understand your point. It's not "putting them down" to admit Korean actors don't have as much recognition as idols do, but still get propped up as being better in Korea. The problem is a lot of Korea has an "anti-idol" mindset.

About the visuals I do agree it is weird, but that prejudice happens mostly because unlike US where singers like Beyonce appeal to all ages, most KPop stars appeal only to teens, you will see how Big bang is respected and hold differently in knetz' eyes even though they have scandals.

But Americans are prejudiced against beiber or 1D, I frequently read much more mean comments about them than any Kpop idols

Ugh, how can you compare Beiber and Selena to Bradd Pitt? Think Madonna, Beyonce, U2, David Bowie (RIP),  Bruce Springsteen, JLo, etc etc

the person I quoted wrote this

'SK actors are basically like d-listers and lower in USA... to think that they put them over a pedestal over world stars like BB and BTS and SNSD is just LMAO'

a clear hate statement, hence I replied

the prejudice and hate against actors in OH and international sites like koreaboo is nothing new.

As a cinephile and music fan it pains me when people lump all actors together, like they all work hard, we dont have to call all of them D listers.

Justin bieber is not respected because of his past controversies, not because of his level of popularity

Nobody can deny the power Bieber has today in the music industry and he is obviously more relevant than Renee Zellweger, Do you think a magazine or a news channel would preffer to do an exclusive interview with Bieber or with Zellweger?

And you have music stars like Beyonce, Rihanna, Adele, Bruno Mars, and legendary groups like the Rolling Stones etc that are treated like legends and not less than actors in any way
