I support Gay Marriage as I believe everyone in the World should receive equal opportunities in life, but I also support the legalisation of Civil Partnerships for Hetrosexual couples as well. Why? Well because if gay people can get married how come straight people can't get civil partnerships? I also heard some gay people saying that civil partnerships is something gays should only have as it was created solely for them, I think that they're being hypocritical because marriage was actually created solely for heterosexual couples, yet that is all changing. Not all straight people want to get married, which is why civil partnerships are good for people who want legal stability.

Tl;dr: Do you think civil partnerships should be made legal for straight couples?

Discuss.

Civil partnerships are not legal for straight people in England.

I'm confused.

What's the actual difference between the union/contracts, excluding who they're for????

I do and may not know this because I am either;

1. Australian, or

2. Uneducated on this matter

I googled it and I couldn't find much. And if it's only entitled/focussed on one country then why not make it specific..

besides the name, what is the difference between a marriage and a civil partnership?

civil union, also referred to as a civil partnership, is a legally recognized form of partnership similar to marriage. Beginning with Denmark in 1989, civil unions under one name or another have been established by law in several, mostly developed, countries in order to provide legal recognition of relationships formed by unmarried same-sex couples and to afford them rights, benefits, and responsibilities similar (in some countries, identical) to those of legally married couples. In some jurisdictions of BrazilNew ZealandUruguayEcuadorFrance and the U.S. states of ColoradoHawaii and Illinois, civil unions are also open to opposite-sex couples.

Skimming/reading through that article, it doesn't seem to portray civil partnerships as superior or even on the same 'level' as marriage in many ways at all >_>

In my country marriage and civil unions/civil partnerships work the same way for both sexual orientations.

But I guess if it's different in other countries, I would agree that it should be made equal.

The only difference is the name, couples in a civil union basically get the same rights as married couples, in Australia.

 I say, grant civil union to heterosexuals in places that recognize same sex marriage...not in places that don't. Fair is fair...unfair is unfair.
