Chinese fans take Kim Soo-hyun worship to new levels

This image has been resized to fit in the page. Click to enlarge.

Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun is as popular as air in China thanks to the immense success of the SBS television drama, "My Love from the Stars." Kim's popularity appears to be spawning quirky local businesses ― vendors are enjoying brisk sales simply for photo-shopping Kim's image into customers' pictures.

According to Chinese news site Weibo, customers are paying 20 yuan (about 3,200 won) or more for doctored pictures showing them with Kim. The vendors, who need just a compute r, usually get the job done within five minutes.

While the vendors have a huge stash of Kim's photos, customers can use their own images.

"Vendors can earn as much as 10,000 yuan (about 1.6 million won) a month," said Weibo.

"That's an incredible amount, considering that the average monthly wage in China is 2,000 yuan (320,000 won)."

SDA has another award called People's choice based on 100% voting. This award is different from the one on Soompi(50% voting + 50% judging) . We must go to this website to vote :

http://comm.news.nate.com/2014drama

How to vote on Nate : http://stars88jo.tumblr.com/post/91720550288/seoul-international-drama-awards-for-nate-web

Let's vote on Soompi and Nate. One vote per day

oh my God guysss I'm going to have to split my loyalty into two because I really think 'Empress Ki' deserves to win the Best Drama, Actress and Actor for this year   I don't think 'My Lover from the Stars' can ever compete with the quality and content which EK so offers.  If only KSH was nominated this year for 'The Moon that Embraces the Sun'... I will vote for both alternately, forgive me!

PS how do you vote on Nate?  Everything is in Korea, I understand nothing

Pretty sure Oppa's fans won't let Empress Ki overtake .Just look at the gap .but i wish it ranked higher than terrible Heirs

I finished watching Empress Ki .it was good. Wang yoo stole my heart. Only he made me cry so hard Poor him and his son ! .tbh I really hate the emperor. He was so useless! !!!!! All he did was follow Nyang everywhere, sometimes I was also pissed by Seung Nyang. When she abandoned Wang Yoo, I felt so heart-broken.

How to vote on Nate : http://forums.soompi.com/discussion/322411/kim-soo-hyun-%EA%B9%80%EC%88%98%ED%98%84/p1257

I'm pretty sure you're right  :hurr:  judging from Soompi's results so far, it's extremely difficult to take over 'Heirs', let alone My Lover.  I know either oppa's or 'Heirs' will win, but I still want to give me votes to EK!  thanks for the link, how do you change from Korean to English on Nate? lol

How did you arrive to that conclusion?  My heart changed towards the Emperor because he's like a little baby chick just hatched and, already thrown in the deep end of the country's politics as its leader, I felt so bad for him.  It's no wonder he always yearns for Nyang because she gave him the strength and confidence he alone could never have muster without her help.  It's true that I did like Wang Yu and Nyang together, but since the Emperor showed his weakness and need for her, my heart kind of answered to that rather than compatibility.  Remember though, nobody ever loved the Emperor for the person he is, only his power and money and status... so I really sympathised and understood where he's coming from.  Wang Yu at least had loyalty from his bandit of men, the Emperior literally had noone on his side, so can you imagine what he must have gone through until Nyang came along?

The ending though  :rlytearpls:  in the end, Nyang did love the Emperor and that's all that really matters.  However, in another life she probably chooses neither lol

i enjoyed the athletic one where he was with the cast throughout. it's not as entertaining when he is seperated from them and has to do his own missions.

i really wish there was some acting news; even if it's just him considering it or doesn't start till next year. all we seem to post on here lately is just cf after cf. but i will take him on a variety show over nothing. it doesn't feel like he's done any domestic activities in a while.

My exact feeling.

the KHJ case makes me sad though because I am/was a fan. I literally just unfollowed the SS501 thread, then the very next day the scandal happened

I am following them closer than ever now that this scandal has surfaced.  I still love SS501 tbh, it's not the others' fault their leader is a gangster

Hi all, i just found ur thread when googling everything about KSH ( im older than him, cant call him oppa tho). Thanks for updating the news and pics about him. I've been posessed by this boy recently after watching YWCFS, really admire his character and abilities. Altho he is younger than me, I can learn alot from him. Will keep an eye on him and hopefully he will keep it up forever. Thanks all for being such an/a active/supportive fan to him, so that I can always know how he is and what he is doing )

Welcome soulmate (mind if I call you that?) I'm eggy, one of the residents of this thread.  You're come to join us and spazz as often as you like!

Gangnam smile: why the Chinese are flocking to South Korea to buy a new face

All around the southern Seoul district of Gangnam, Chinese women walk down the street with bandages over their faces and around their heads. Some, despite hoodies pulled up and parasols pulled down, are so badly bruised and swollen that they look as if they’ve just survived a car accident – if only barely. They’re riding the latest crest of the Korean Wave: plastic surgery.

Korean cultural exports – especially the manufactured “K-Pop†music and schmaltzy soap operas – have become a phenomenon across Asia. There is a huge following in China, in particular, and an increasing number of fans are coming to South Korea not just for shopping and sightseeing, but also for nips and tucks – and more. Gangnam is South Korea’s capital of conspicuous consumption, made famous by the worldwide hit song, Psy’s “Gangnam Styleâ€.

“Naturally, Korean dramas and K-Pop have a lot to do with it,†says Hong  Sung-bum, a plastic surgeon and the director of the BK Hospital, a 15-storey building in Gangnam devoted to various kinds of cosmetic additions or subtractions, which employs 30 Chinese-speaking staff. “There are lots of Chinese patients who come asking to look like a certain star,†he says in his office, still wearing his blue scrubs.

Right now, the hottest look is Jun Ji-hyun, star of My Love from the Star, a soap opera in which an alien accidentally arrives on Earth 400 years ago, meets an arrogant female pop star and falls in love. Women covet not just Jun’s wardrobe and her lifestyle, but her face, too. And a considerable number of men want to look more like Kim Soo-hyun, who plays the alien character.

As the Korean government promotes ever-closer economic relations with China, it is busily promoting a “Korean medical waveâ€. The Korean Tourism Organisation (KTO) regularly organises plastic surgery expos in Beijing and Shanghai, where K-Pop singers and dancers perform and women learn how to do their make-up like the Korean Wave stars. Groups of doctors offer advice.

“We tell them that these people are not just doctors, they’re beauty designers,†says Kim Su-jin, an official at the KTO’s medical tourism division. The Korean surgery craze is part of a broader boom in tourism from China and comes as arrivals from Japan have fallen sharply amid worsening geopolitical tensions.

According to KTO figures, 56,075 Chinese visitors had medical treatment in South Korea last year, rising 26.5 per cent from the previous year and up from just 4,725 in 2009. Not all had plastic surgery, but almost 10,000 did have such surgery in Korea in 2012.

“The Korean dramas definitely had an effect on my decision to come here,†says Xu Xiao Hong, a 28-year-old office worker from Tsingtao, who was visiting the BK clinic during a shopping trip.

“I think Korean actresses are very beautiful,†she says. Carefully made up and trendily dressed in short shorts and platform sandals, she cuts a stylish figure. But Xu has a complex about her “too prominent†cheekbones. “When I see myself in photos, all I can see is my cheeks,†she says, in a BK consultation room.

She is getting married next year and wants her wedding pictures to be perfect. Her fiancé – who, she says, has no complaints about her appearance – knew she was in Korea but not that she was consulting a plastic surgeon. “If the consultation goes well, I will talk to my boyfriend and my parents about it,†she says. “It’s a pretty big operation.†Indeed, it is.

While the most common procedures are operations to make Caucasian-style double-eyelids (costing $700 – £422 – to $1,500) and nose jobs ($1,500 to $4,500), many patients, like Xu, want “facial contouring†– invasive surgery that involves shaving or chopping away bones.

One particularly common procedure – which Hong, the surgeon, calls “super smile surgery†– is for patients who think their chins are too prominent, and involves cutting sections out of their jawbones. It takes only three hours, but the recovery takes six months.

Hong says the most common risk post-surgery is patient dissatisfaction. “This is not a clothing store where you can shop for the clothes Jun wears,†Hong says. “When a patient comes in and says they want to look like her, we go through a consultation... and try to find a halfway point.â€

The plastic surgery craze creates big business in China, too. Chinese travel agencies offer packages that combine several days of sightseeing with longer periods of plastic surgery. Ocean International Travel Service offers a typical five-day tour for about $1,000, surgeries not included. The plastic-surgery industry has become so dominant in Gangnam that some intersections feature clinics on all four corners. The underpasses to the subway station are wallpapered with ads for cosmetic enhancements.

Sitting up in a bed in a recovery room at BK, with a blue mask over her mouth and a drip in her arm, Chen Mao says she started aging more rapidly when she turned 35, three years ago, and wanted to do something about it. She had fat from her midriff injected into her face to smooth out the lines. “I want to look more youthful,†Chen said, patting her bandages. “I know that Korean celebrities’ beauty is not natural, and I know that they all have their surgeries done in Gangnam.

“So I wanted to be like them and invest my time and money here, too.â€

I am aware that 'My Love from the Stars' was a hit in Asia, now I'm saying that the Chinese took it a level which touched the European radar.  You can only imagine how influential oppa's power is across the world, especially in China, enough for the Hallyu Wave to reach English shores.

And the Independent is an actual legit newspaper as well not some tabloid. I hope to see him become a world star. I would love to see him star in a korean/hollywood film e.g. like Snow-piercer and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (I know its chinese) type of film where its released world wide.

But seriously though, the Chinese really have it bad for YWCFTS & KSH. Was METS even big/relevant in China when it aired?

I would love to see him in a Hollywood movie, definitely, but not a 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' type.  Just a normal Hollywood film will do him a world of good.

Thanks Eggy for welcoming. I Will enjoy my stay here

:chu:

The METS team are about to start a new big budget drama for MBC called Kill Me Heal Me; it's about a chaeobal heir with multiple personality disorder (he has 7 personalities) and the rookie psychiatrist who is treating him. obviously they fall in love. his family has some dark secret etc. etc. it's meant to premiere in January 2015 so would kind of fit in with what we were expecting in regards to KSH schedule.

http://koalasplayground.com/2014/08/28/mbc-prepping-drama-kill-me-heal-with-a-multiple-personality-male-lead-by-the-writer-of-the-moon-embraces-the-sun/

Do you guys think it's the project KSH mentioned at the Yili secret event yday? It sounds kind of interesting but I can see it going wrong. I'm not sure how I feel about it; I wanted him to do like a crime thriller drama. I can see Kill Me Heal ending up so cliche and cheesy to quickly; but the multiple personality part is intriguing and I would be all for it if they turned it into a thriller e.g. one of his personalities is a murderer etc.  so the drama esentially becomes a mind games type of deal. [+1]

The multi-personality sounds like a step forward imo, that will be challenging if he takes on the role.  But waee make them fall in love....?  I hope Koreans realise not every drama need romance in order to get high-rated.  A psychological thriller alone ticks all the boxes, it's enough to work with for more or less 20 episodes, an element of romance may kill the story.

Isn't he the most adorable little thing  :ilove: Those lips, that smile <33  He has gained a little bit of weight from looking at these photos, I like that... but not too much

I think so too, I think if he ever starred in a 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' type of film, it will limit him to that genre only.

Same.  I just want him to be a villain to be honest for I have never seen him play the opposite side.

he gets tanned too, I think. Transforming from cute boy to a real tough guy, I like both

Im watching Dream High again, hopefully we can see the new project soon. Hes good at selecting the script, i believe whatever he choose will be the best one.

Tanned Koreans look just as attractive as tanned Westerners imo, so I can forget about Hollywood celebs when I have younger and better looking Asian celebs  :lub:  I think KSH is tough in a gentleman-like manner; take Lee Min Ho for example (sorry for keep using him as comparison lol!), I can totally imagine him a bad boy who loses his control and destroys everything that gets in his way.  On the other hand oppa's personality is more gentle and under control; should he get angry, he'd probably clench his jaws and look straight at you with furious eyes.  You know what I'm sayin'? :meow:

I think that he could really pull off this type of role

If he can play well on both sides, this makes him a versatile as well as very sought-after actor.
