G-Dragon's Musical Direction

If you've listened to Kwon Ji Yong, then you know that the album has a pretty heavy theme overall and gradually we've seen that work start to show itself when he released his last solo album (with crooked) and even with BigBang's albums (loser, etc.)

I would love for him to continue writing these kinds of songs and go even darker- mentally I'd want him to be okay - but I think when he gets out of the army he could lose the bangers and go a more "Epik High" route.

Thoughts? Does anyone else want a deeper, more grown-up Kwon Ji Yong?

I think this is a one-off of a fully dark theme album. Lyrics and music.

He's always been a bit dark. He makes it sound happy but the lyrics are sad. Ex: Crooked, Sunset Glow,

Im agree w you. GD is expert in making upbeat song w depressing/dark lyrics tbh.

Also dont forget the amazingness of Dirty Cash. One of my fav lyrics from BB discography. The song sound pop-ish but the lyrics heavily criticizing the bribery issue.

I liked the writing and theme of KJY but it was quite disappointing for me from a sound perspective, sure the production on the tracks themselves were fantastic but in the end KJY just hopped on current trends in hip-hop/trap which I'm sure everyone has already heard elsewhere. I still love Untitled and Divina Commedia though

It's not that I don't want him to play by trends, because he's done it numerous times in the past with great success; I like GD more when he's exploring more adventurous and unconventional sounds like Runaway, ROD, She's Gone, Today, One of a Kind, Shake The World, I Love It, Niliria and so on. Some of the tracks listed do incorporate trends of their time but they were always done in a way that made the trendy sound feel like an accessory to the song rather than its entire basis

KJY was the perfect opportunity to GD to use more unique and unconventional sounds, or even something that was more lowkey and gritty now that we've seen what the songs are actually about. I reckon it would've been cool to see GD do an album along the lines of KJY based on the sound of 'You Do' from CDE - I loved the slight punk edge to it

So yeah I would like to see GD continue down this thematic/lyrical route but I want him to do more with his production

I really like the album. I think GD is digging deeper with his lyrics. Its not just simple love songs (not that love songs are simple, don't think that's what I am saying), but like their songs that some people can relate to and identify with.

For example Loser is a song I really identify.

I think it'd be nice if banger tracks don't completely go away, but these more emotional songs are really catchy lyrically for me.

These are all good points as far as history, production, etc.

I don't want him to spiral (weight loss, stress, etc) but since he's pretty much reached the top he can work on cementing that "legend" status by leaving behind important works. Divina Commedia low key reminded me of Airbag by Tablo which is why I brought it up (different messages and Tablo's lyricism is unmatched) but the feeling that the last song left behind was almost there and I feel like he's in a place where he can be as honest as he wants and he'll survive.
