Spanish matador gored to death after his feet became tangled in his cloak

Ivan Fandino, a veteran Spanish bullfighter, was gored to death when his feet became caught up in his cloak during a festival in France.

Fandino, 36, fell to the ground and was gored by the bull known as Burp, according to the BBC. His heart, lungs and kidneys were injured and he died while being taken to a hospital. “It’s a tragedy,†a stunned colleague told the Daily Mail. “We just do not know how it could have happened.â€

This is the first matador fatality in France, according to France’s Sud-Ouest newspaper, since 1921, when Isidoro Mari Fernando died in the arena in Béziers. Spectators at the Aire-sur-l’Adour bullfighting festival near Pau in southwest France were horrified as they watched the 5-year-old bull gore and toss the Basque bullfighter into the air.

“Ivan was caught by surprise and suffered the consequences,†an unidentified spectator told the Daily Mail. “People were cheering to begin with, thinking everything was under control. Then we realized that Ivan was very badly hurt, and he was rushed away by other matadors, supported by paramedics.â€

The bull, which was gravely injured, was put down. The Humane Society International called for bullfighting to be banned in France. “For the 1,000 bulls brutally killed in French bullfights every year, every single fight is a tragedy in which they have no chance of escaping a protracted and painful death. Bloodsports like this should be consigned to the history books, no one should lose their life for entertainment, human or animal.†Bullfighting was declared legal in France in 2012.

Fandino was twice injured. In 2014, he was knocked unconscious in Bayonne, France, and the following year he was thrown into the air by a bull in Pamplona, Spain

Fandino, who is survived by his wife and daughter, is the second Spanish bullfighter to die in the ring in the 11 months. Victor Barrio was killed after being gored by a bull last July. His death was the first involving a professional matador in the ring in Spain since 1992.

This is going to sound cruel, but I don't care that he died. The sport is nothing except irritating an animal over and over, and then once people have some good "fun" out of it they kill it- for what?? For responding to being provoked again and again? I don't have any respect for matadors and I don't have any respect for people who think that this is okay and, "just for fun".

The bull shouldn't be sacrificed, he did his job and to my understanding he won, right? I mean is a shame the guy died but that's the nature of the 'sport' so the at the very least if the bull horns him to death they should leave him alone at that point.

what is bullfighting? the wiki page isnt telling me anything

It's very different in comparison to what the media in America portrays it as.

Essentially, it's the glorified torture and brutal murder of an animal for sport. Beforehand, a bull has its testicles pierced with needles and the animal is beaten. This is to ensure that the bull is irritated enough for the "fight." Also, the bull has a good portion of its horns sanded down, taking away one of its natural weapons.

From there, the bull is then let out onto the arena and the matador is free to kill it. The matador has a sword that he uses to strike the animal down, after luring it close enough via cape. Some bulls are frightened and literally run around the arena while the matador chases after him. Other times the matador has to slice at the animal multiple times until he dies.

It's a brutal, barbaric sport advocated by old men in hopes of preserving their "culture." Yet another example of human barbarity. The human race is better off dead tbh.

I say good ridance to the matador.

I feel for the family as they lost a loved one. I do, however, find it difficult to feel for the bullfighter. Anyone who purposefully puts themselves in harm's way for this kind of "sport" knows what can happen. He tempted fate and fate got the better of him.
