Dropping Out of College

I dropped out, or more like taking a break, but not sure if I am going to return. So technically I haven't gone on long enough to know if I'll regret dropping out if I choose not to return, but in the meanwhile I am working good money so I don't mind at all. Plenty of people find success without a degree.

Honestly, I'm just so scared because I don't know what I'm going to do now.

I dropped out twice.

Once in 2013, I thought that since my mind was fresh, I'd be fine going ahead, but I couldn't do it, so I left after one semester.

The second, two years after, I quit after the mid-terms because I was in a middle of some personal problems.

I just finished my junior year of college after taking summer classes to catch up. Supposed to have graduated this year, but I'm in the right track.

I didn't drop out, but I tried to forgo going to college after I finished high school. I didn't think a degree was necessary. I took about 3 years off and tried to work. I pretty quickly found work in an area that I found myself really passionate about. I worked in the field for a few years and I made okay money, but I slowly learned that in order to ever move up in the field that I would have to have a degree. So after being out of school for three years I ended up going back to college and now I'm almost done. I still work in the same field part time and I pretty much have a guaranteed full time job after I finish my degree which I'm thankful for. My employer has even talked about possibly helping pay for graduate school if I choose to pursue further education.

Ew I feel like I just rambled about myself a lot, but the moral of my story is that in my experience it seems a college degree is indeed necessary. And its not just in my field, because I have talked to a lot of my peers in college who were in the same position as me but in different fields.

I can't finish, because I can't afford it. That's one of the main reasons I'm dropping out and I don't have enough credits to qualify as a junior, so I would have to stay at college longer. I just can't afford to go deeper in debt. At least for me I was a drama major with a minor in creative writing, I don't really need a degree for the field that I want to go in.

Honestly, I'm just so scared because I don't know what I'm going to do now.

To be honest, I'm still sort of in the same position. I worked so hard to get into a good college and got a free ride, lots of scholarship money and everthing, but life just did not go the way I planned.

Its so scary because all you ever hear is how awful your life will be without a degree and it really sucks.

But I just talked to my family (a lot of them are involved in health care) and they helped me to get a job.

Although I did not want to go into healthcare, for now it's the most practical thing for me rn and im5 just working with what I got for now.

My advice for you though is to try and not stress over it too much because no matter what the road does not end here.

If you really do end up dropping out or taking a year off like myself, you can work a job (it doesn't matter what) while thinking over what you'd actually like to do with your life. Maybe after a year you might find your calling.

Also, it's never to late to go back to school of you really need to. I'm not sure what country you are from though... But where I am at there are lots of opportunities for that, so I'm hoping it's the same for you.

Thanks for the advice, but for me it's not about finding my calling; I know exactly what I want to do. The reason why I have to drop out is, because of money and because I don't have enough credits to qualify as a junior, which will make me have to stay at college longer; I can't afford that.

Oh damn, well I'm sorry to hear that. It's really unfortunate that you work so hard only for things beyond your control to get in your way.

Yeah all of this really does suck, at least my friend who just inherited 10 mil invited me to stay with her in NYC without having to pay rent, so I can work to pay off my debts and focus on acting professionally (which was what I was studying for).

Didn't drop out but I took a break and basically extended my course for an extra 1.5 years. I'm very fortunate university education here is essentially "pay back when you can".

My cousin dropped out for good and he's really happy working and travelling.

What does he do, if you don't mind me asking?

I dropped out, sophomore year. I took off for about a year and worked enough to pay my tuition through the rest of my junior year so I only needed loans for senior year.

Sometimes it's better to take a break for your own mental health. Sometimes, college isn't for you. Our society has enforced the idea that you HAVE to go, but there are still plenty of jobs that you don't have to do it for.

College is NOT for most people. It is just another for profit industry playing on the naivete of young people who still don't understand 'how the world works'.

Maybe that's just where you live? In my country there's a few public universities that you don't have to pay tuition for, and they aren't bad at all.

Admittedly, there are super expensive private schools and universities reserved for the upper classes in which you basically buy your diploma, but they don't have the same reputation
