I'm talking to a friend about korean fan/ idol culture and I was explaining the hatemongering that happens online and how it can actually threaten careers. this made me think about the worst witch hunts that idols have gone through. what's the worst y'all can remember?

the ones I gave him are (in order of seriousness imo)

1. t-ara post bullying scandal which was this close to ending their careers for good (thank god for the chinese market)

2. seolhyun & jimin's history scandal; hunted for months, aoa practically had to restart from the bottom

3. taeyeon & baekhyun's dating scandal where she ended up crying and begging fans for forgiveness in airports

4. tiffany's flag scandal

5. tzuyu taiwan controversy, forced to apologize publicly for, well, nothing

i dont think taeyeon x baekhyun scandal is bigger than tiffany's scandal since it didnt affect taeyeon's work/schedule in any way. and she wasnt crying and begging at the airport. she said she was sorry to fans...

taeyeon x baekhyun scandal was big but it wasnt career threating scandal. fans went crazy and they were called out names but thats pretty much it. they werent kicked from a show or took hiatus or anything like that.

personally no dating scandal was that huge in kpop to be able to compare to actually serious scandals.

Also Bom scandal was/is huge, it kinda destroyed her career.

I think Daesung scandal was huge when it happened also.

Nichkhun's DUI destroyed his career in Korea. no one denies he is popular but he lost a lot of korean fans, his popularity is now mostly outside korea.

The girl from jewelry that got into a fight with actress that seemed pretty big.

All those scandals imo are bigger than Taeyeon scandal or Tzuyu scandal (her was more serious in china than korea)

Yeah, dating scandals aren't that bad in the long term. Baekhyun/Taeyeon got a lot of shit and rumors thrown at them, but they recovered from that fairly fast. Even IU, who lost her creepy uncle fans with the Eunhyuk thing, reached new heights in the years after (it did fuck up Eunhyuk's career though). GD's plagiarism accusations were pretty huge (he got suicide petitions iirc, which...), and so was the weed thing. It didn't destroy his career though, so I guess the after effects of a scandal depend both on the nature of what you did and the way you're marketed/your popularity (people who are seen as talented and popular for that perception seem to recover more easily)

Exp edition. I get why people might not like them, but their mv has so many dislikes, although the song is actually not that bad.

Daesung with his car accident. To this day, I still feel sorry for him.

T-ara's bullying scandal is one of the worst cases of mass witch hunting I have seen, that scandal ruined their Korean careers for years.

YG's drug scandals (GD, Bom and most recently TOP). Bom's career was destroyed, and while GD was saved somehow, he probably still lost a lot of fans and respect. And TOP dont really have much credibility with the Korean public ATM (I seriously hope he will be okay).

Why are we forgetting Tablo and the way knetz hounded him to the point he was even so afraid to bring Haru to the hospital because of death threats.  I'm glad he recovered and it was thanks to his wife that he got signed to YG.

Yoochun got accused of rape and almost every media outfit jumped on it and then it turned out false accusation - but nobody cares and hardly anybody reported on it.

As someone mentioned Henry =)) Do you all remember the 'Only 13' thing?
The fact that SJ is coming back remind me of this. And, there're still lots of 'Only 13' now. I read from some pages that they'll stick with 'Only 13 + 2'.

I am not saying in term of, wanting Henry to be in, or bashing 'Only 13', since it's a controversial topic.

I am just mentioning it as a fact that follow Henry 10 years already.
