Han Cinema Episode 4

When Sang-mi's family starts to rapidly fall apart, the cult of Guseonwon is right there to push them over the edge. "Save Me" continues to build the tragedy of the victims involved and things are about to reach a breaking point when we reunite with our characters three years later. A stronger, more determined and proactive Sang-mi will see to that.

If it meows, it is probably not a dog and the holy water everyone is on has been meowing since day one. We have confirmation of its combined effects with the power of suggestion on a weakened mind and the series has established Im Joo-ho's (Jung Hae-kyun) weak mind thoroughly, before the added burden of losing a child and after it. The weaker he grows, however, the stronger Sang-mi (Seo Ye-ji) will get and the time jump makes that clear.

We can scratch Muism off the list of options for the Im family, as "Save Me" reminds us that all religions harm if the hands that wield them are dirty and the minds that twist them greedy. Some simply put on a better act. I am just not sure whether the fact that the trio of Guseonwon do not drop said act even when alone together means each member is trying to fool the others or whether they do it because they are so used to their facade.

People do not change easily and while Jeong-gi (Jo Sung-ha) may believe he has, which would make him even more dangerous, Jo Wan-tae (Jo Jae-yoon) is clearly not buying it. His behavior is the boldest out of the three, because he knows through himself that "the habit does not make the priest", to use a Greek idiom disturbingly appropriate for this situation. He may even inadvertently aid in the cult's undoing later on, because he loves flaunting the power his oppressor role gives him.

photo877380.jpg&key=da5a597ce9bca442e57dphoto877379.jpg&key=0d7cfd169765c66b79c5

He is not the only one who grows more powerful, however. Sang-mi finally has the will to fight and while I find the idea of putting a developmentally challenged child in danger to motivate a character a tad too manipulative, it would be unrealistic of the series to have Sang-mi fighting for people she believes stay there willingly. Additionally, Jeong-goo (Jung Joon-won) reminds her of her perceived failure to protect a loved one.

Jeong-goo is also not without agency and I feel his knowledge of the cult's underbelly will help a lot later on. I am curious to see what three years have done to everyone and particularly Dong-cheol (Woo Do-hwan), who hopefully has a healthier relationship with religion. If Sang-hwan's (Taecyeon) father tried to kill him, this friendship will need a lot of work. They better get to it, because Sang-mi will not wait.

  • Rescue Me: Episode 3rescueme03-38521.jpg

The focus shifts from our insidious cult toward our band of friends and their own problems in this hour. As it turns out, there is just as much corruption and moral bankruptcy in the world outside of the cult, and the deciding factor comes down to what each of our heroes are willing to do in the face of injustice—will they stand by to save face, or will they stand up for what’s right?

Poor Dong-chul. He’s taking the brunt of the injustice in this episode (at least in terms of being actively penalized, while the Im Family might be more aggrieved in the overall sense). We’re seeing all kinds of corruption from the adults in this world, and one of the most consistent themes thus far is the effect of influential parents on the outcomes of their children’s wrongdoings.

The bullies got off without incident despite being a big factor in Sang-jin’s death, while at the same time, they ruined Dong-chul’s life because he fought to protect Sang-jin from them, all because their parents are influential while Dong-chul’s dad is a drunkard. Meanwhile, Sang-hwan is able to reap the benefits of his father’s influence as well by avoiding prosecution, and whether he knows it or not, he’s complicit because he let his father talk him out of helping Dong-chul get out of his charges.

We also saw that Yong-min himself was corrupt by bribing the detective with a promotion and manipulating the press to gain positive momentum for his campaign, all in the name of securing more power for himself. I feel that all of this is very likely to weigh heavily on Sang-hwan’s conscience, and I’m hoping that he’ll make sure to rectify the injustices he’s so far been unable to (or unwilling to) do something about.

While the show is taking its time to setup the full extent of the cult and the damsel who will need to be rescued from it, it’s interesting to get to explore the rest of the show’s world a bit more first. We get to see that there are a lot more evils out there than just this cult and, importantly, that these evils are prevalent enough that they can drive people to the point where a fanatical cult might be able to infiltrate their lives, which is a significant step in establishing the believability of the cult in the first place.

The Im Family are essentially primed at this point to allow Guseonwon into their lives: The grief of dealing with Sang-jin’s suicide drove Dad to attempt to assault the culprits, which he couldn’t even manage to do. Mom is legitimately losing her mind, and Sang-mi was one step away from following Sang-jin to the grave before Disciple Jo stepped in.

RescueMe03-00074.jpg

I’ll be interested to see how much Sang-mi will resist the pull toward Guseonwon, though. She knows from her initial encounter with Father Baek that something is not right, and Disciple Jo also seems to view her as an object of sexual interest more than anything else.

As for Father Baek, I found him to be more predatory in the first two episodes than outright creepy, but the way he talked about Sang-mi in this episode elevated him to maximum creep factor for me. Actually referring to her chastity and how she’ll lead the congregation to salvation is enough to make you wonder what exactly he has in store for Sang-mi, and whatever it is, it can’t be good.

Still, everything seems set up now for the full indoctrination to commence, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the cult is able to engulf all three of them with little effort in the very near future. The question then becomes: How far are Sang-hwan and gang willing to go to right the injustices of the world and help save a family on the brink?

I just started watching this show. From episode 1 you can tell that the dad is spineless and a sucker. The fact that the family continued to follow his useless self is just mind blowing to me. But then I have to realize it's a drama.

This is probably one of the most graphic dramas that I have seen so far. A couple of scenes left me a little uncomfortable, especially the ones with Sang Mi and the apostle guy (I forgot his name). Plus really any scene with him in it is uncomfortable, but that just shows what great of an actor he his. I have watched about 4 different dramas and the movie The Prison that he's in and he just a fantastic actor.

I sorta skimmed through all the episodes, but I'm gonna take my time and go back and watch them fully. But so far I'm getting quite invested this. The actor who plays Dong Cheol is also quite good. In general the acting is working out good so far. Sometimes the actress who plays Sang Mi throws me off a little, but so far so good.

SM: He’s good looking, isn’t he? Our Dong Chul-ie is too nice. Yes, please anticipate him a lot.
DC: Yes. Hello. Oh, this is fascinating. (think he’s commenting on the v-live comments)
SM: (reading) Have you had your meal? (answering) I haven’t eaten yet.
DC: You haven’t eaten yet?
SM: No. I haven’t gone in yet.
DC: You should go in. (to where they are serving food presumably)
SM: Have you eaten?
DC: Ahh. No.
SM: Oh no. We’ve both not eaten because we had shooting to do. Okay, goodbye. (both waving their hands) Dong Chul, fighting!
DC: Yes, fighting!
SM: Make your greeting! (DC bows as commanded to do so)
DC: I will see you later.
SM: Bye!
DC: (to SM) See you later.

SM: Omo. I was talking (with you) like this when Dong Chul-nim brought over some chocolates like this.
SM: Thank you (taking chocolates that DC had handed her)
DC: Is this too much?
SM: No. I will eat them all soon.
SM: Dong Chul-ie gave them to me. Woo Do Hwan jjang! (So, I think most of you will know that “jjang†means “greatâ€, so she’s saying Woo Do-Hwan who is the actor playing DC is great or the best.)
DC: Please enjoy them.
SM: Thanks.

  • Rescue Me: Episode 4rescueme04-83071.jpg

The tragedy that connects the heroes of Rescue Me also serves as a catalyst for change in this episode. Relationships change as friends and family members drift away or are forced apart, while other characters are thrown together, for better or worse. Other changes are more personal, as Sang-mi loses any ally she could have had and becomes the only sane voice in a group of people that are becoming more and more sinister with every passing hour.

COMMENTS

Throughout the show, Sang-mi has exhibited a will of iron as well as a nearly infallible bullshit detector. She has remained steadfast and unquestioning of herself and her own moral compass despite all that has happened, not least of all being forced to live inside a cult for three years. Until she confronted the others in the cult about Jeong-gu, her strength had been shown mostly through her patience and passive resistance. After seeing the video of Disciple Jo’s attempted rape and the car accident, she will now need to prove her strength through her ability to fight back and actively protect herself and those she cares about, especially since Jeong-gu reminds her so much of the brother she couldn’t protect.

In contrast to Sang-mi, Sang-hwan was far more doubting and unsure of himself. This made it so gratifying to see him stand up to the sunbae bullies at the university. In Seoul, he seems to have little interest in a social life, focusing his attention on studying law instead. Sang-hwan’s transformation is surely the result of his role Sang-jin’s death, Dong-chul’s repeated arrests and incarceration, and his father’s pressure on him to hold back from doing what he knew was right and just.

Back in Muji, he had already started to distance himself emotionally from his father and did not return home for three years after going away to school. Now seemingly a more confident, morally aware individual, it will be interesting to see what Sang-hwan’s relationships will look like when encounters his father, Dong-chul, and Sang-mi after such a long absence.

Dong-chul looked like he was strong enough to fight the inmates that were paid to hurt him, but what happened after that initial confrontation is less clear. What changes did he undergo during his incarceration? Also, how does he feel about Sang-hwan, who basically turned his back on him twice in favor of helping his father’s re-election campaign? Has he forgiven Sang-hwan, or has he been building up resentment over the last three years?

Rescue Me started out as a grim, dark show that was almost too intense and painful for me to watch. It is still dark and grim, but it’s been fascinating to see how the interconnected lives of all the characters unfold. And the inner (and often outer) strength of our heroes provide rays of hope for a better future in the episodes to come.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

javabeans

  • Rescue Me: Agh, these characters! They’re so well-drawn and well-motivated, and it’s so riveting to watch this trainwreck happen to Sang-mi in slow motion while also being really hard to take sometimes. I was SO MAD at Taec for not saving the day when he could, and I totally get why things had to happen that way and why it’s a necessary backdrop for the current-day cult setup, but I was just so mad at him for not being a hero and then sorry for being mad at a simple-minded 17-year-old kid, and then grudgingly impressed with the show for making me care so much. I don’t know if I can take this show with all its intensity for twelve more episodes, but I also can’t look away.

  • Rescue Me: My heart sank when Dad finally snapped too, leaving Sang-mi essentially all alone in the world. I didn’t expect the time-skip, but now the stage has been set for regret and a chance to right wrongs, not to mention for the cult to have amassed more influence and power over the town. And a chance to mend broken bromances, right? RIGHT? If Taec and Woo Do-hwan can’t be besties again, there is no more good left in this world!

  • Rescue Me: I am simultaneously so creeped out by this show, but so invested in the characters (well, maybe just Dong-chul) that I can’t help but keep tuning in. It’s almost hard to watch at this point, ‘cause all the good guys are so beaten down, and Sang-mi especially is having to deal with a boatload of problems she has little power to change, not least fending off the disgusting Disciple Jo. It’s a miracle she’s gotten this far without being assaulted. Speaking of which, I was pretty surprised at the time jump, but I’m also eager to see how much Dong-chul’s changed in the interim. I just want him back on the streets on his motorbike, being the knight-in-shining-leather-jacket. Is that too much to ask?

SM Mother: Now, I…I don’t know what I’ll do.
SM Father: This is all because of you.
