2PM's Ok Taecyeon stars in OCN thriller 'Save Me'

SEOUL, July 27 (Yonhap) -- Singer-actor Ok Taecyeon of boy band 2PM will star in the upcoming OCN thriller series "Save Me," which centers on a fictional religious cult.

"The biggest reason for choosing 'Save Me' was the opportunity to work with excellent actors. Also the subject involving a religious cult isn't something that comes along easily. I found it intriguing," Ok said Thursday at a press conference held at the Time Square mall in western Seoul.

Ok plays Han Sang-hwan, a good-looking and witty high school student and a son of a county governor in a rural area. He joins a mysterious religious cult led by Baek Jung-ki, played by character actor Cho Sung-ha, in order to save his first love, portrayed by Seo Ye-ji, who is held by the sect.

The series is based on a hit web comic series "Out In The World," created by Cho Geum-san, which ran from June 2011 to January 2013.

"The charm of this drama is seeing how characters grow when they are faced with irrational social norms," Ok said.

The series is the first TV project for Director Kim Sung-soo, who had previously worked in the film industry. "I came across very good material and thought I had to direct it, not minding whether it should be a movie or a TV drama."

"Save Me" could likely be Ok's final project before he starts his mandatory military service. The singer gave up his American green card and has even received treatment for a spinal disc problem in order to serve.

"I really want to go (to the military) this year. I will if the Military Manpower Administration summons me. Wouldn't this be my final project (before joining the military)?â€

In Korea, all able-bodied men have to fulfill military duty for around two years.

"Save Me" premieres Aug. 5 on OCN.

[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Save Me"

photo872652.jpg

South Korea was shaken quite badly by last year's political scandal and the absurd nature of its cult element has been widely discussed. It is only a matter of time before Dramaland takes a bigger dive into the dark side of religion after occasionally dipping its toes in it and "Save Me" might take that plunge.

Premise

Four young men struggling to get by in their challenging lives reunite with an old acquaintance who asks for their help. The woman and her family are being held captive by a religious cult. The four young men band together in order to save her and expose the cult's true face.

The Worrying

Lead Actors

The two leads are what originally put me off this series, as my experience with them has been quite negative. While I enjoy Taecyeon and Seo Ye-ji's work choices, both have been barely watchable on the acting scale for me. Admittedly, my experience is limited and I so I hope that both have improved enough to carry what seems like a challenging work.

Unknown Writer/s

With a cast which I cannot yet trust carrying a fresh premise for Korean drama in a channel rarely stepping outside of their crime-related comfort zone, a writer without a track record is yet another worrying unknown. Quite a lot of articles and some databases have two writers on board, but it will be a challenge regardless and I hope they are up for it.

The Reassuring

photo872650.jpgphoto872651.jpg

Cult Theme

The topic of religion's darker underbelly has been rarely featured in Korean drama. The mudang case in "God's Quiz" and the "exorcist" in "Vampire Detective" are two examples. The industry has received pressure from the censorship body acting on complaints from religious groups in the past and so I understand their hesitation. Even so "Save Me" is here, it is fresh and exciting.

Citizen's Arrest

Crime shows often rely on the suspense and action of the chase, which is for the most part handled by law enforcement. This is why most leading characters in such shows are detectives, prosecutors and other members of the law. A series where rescue is the focus and struggling young adults the heroes is a welcome change and frankly a more suspenseful approach.

Closing Thoughts

I always try to curb my expectations when a drama's promotion and premise are exciting. I know better by now, but it is a testament to the quality of that promotion when I struggle and "Save Me" has me struggling. I want this to be good very badly, but I will be prepared for anything.

"Save Me" begins its run on August 5th and will air every Saturday and Sunday at 22:00, on OCN. It is directed by Kim Seong-soo, written by Jeong Sin-gyoo and Jeong I-do-I and features TaecyeonSeo Ye-jiJo Sung-ha and Woo Do-hwan.

Premiere Watch: Rescue Me (Save Me)

by javabeans

Rescue Me

premiere_rescue1.jpg

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: OCN
Genre: Thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Okay, now this looks exciting. The teasers have been so creepy in the best way, and I have a feeling this show will be eerie, suspenseful, and chilling. I’m a wimp when it comes to straight horror or gore, but as this show deals with religious cults, it’s a different kind of terror we’re dealing with. Cults are a new topic for dramaland, and feel fresh and interesting, and a little provocative.

Moreover, I feel like this time Taecyeon (Bring It On, Ghost) is perfectly cast for this role—a hotheaded country bumpkin who sees someone in need and is compelled into action—and while I don’t feel a particular pull with Seo Ye-ji (Hwarang, Last), she also seems well-suited for this role of a young woman whose family gets caught up in the cult, and being the only one who seems to sense its bad juju. This is director Kim Sung-soo’s first drama series, but he’s got several films under his belt (mystery-thriller Genome Hazard, action-noir Running Wild) so let’s hope that translates to the small screen.

OCN brings thriller based on a religious cult in the form of ‘Save Me’

OCN, the home to all thrills and chills, is bringing a new series that follows just completed Duel. It’s titled Save Me (or Rescue Me) and it definitely has a fresh concept as far as Korean thrillers go, where almost every one of them have serial murders as the main theme or the episodic nature (which again has serial-killer-chase as their modus operandi). Save Me bases its plot on a religious cult and its blind following, and is screen adaptation of a webtoon Out Of The World that was published from 2011 to 2013.

Jo Sung Ha (The K2) plays the charismatic leader of above mentioned cult with Jo Jae Yoon (Defendant) and Park Ji Young (The Liar and His Lover) playing his right hand man and woman respectively. The show is set in a small town where more and more people are starting to believe in this religious cult. Seo Ye Ji (Hwarang) stars as a girl whose family also gets entangled with this group. Of course, in reality, the mysterious cult leader doesn’t seem to have any good or pure intentions. Taecyeon (Bring It On, Ghost), Woo Do Hwan (The Man Living in Our House), Lee David (Bring It On, Ghost) and newbie Ha Hwe Jung play four country guys who are unemployed. They will take it upon themselves to save the people around them from the clutches of this religious cult when one day their acquaintance Seo Ye Ji asks them to rescue her. I’m liking the fresh intriguing premise of this thriller with a psychological bent and apart from finding it creepy and mysterious, I’m excited to see how the four simple guys would succeed in their mission without any means or power.

Save Me comes from the PD of movie Running Wild and a new writer. Its premiere date is August 5 in the weekend slot.
