DC: Has she really fallen into danger?
SH: I think she’s been caught by some cult or something.
DC: I’ve seen people them while in jail as well. They fall into some cult, think they see ghosts, and kill their own children. Han Sang Hwan, then, are you confident that this time you won’t run away?
SH: This time, I absolutely won’t run away.
(the other boys come)
JH: Hey, Dong Chul! You. You look good from your hair down. Hey. Do you know how much I’ve wanted to see you? Hey. (hugging DC)
(MH just goes in for the hug.)
MH: Have you been well? During that time you’ve suffered.
JH: Okay, hey. Seeing each other in 3 years, we should have a drink.
(Later, drinking)
MH: Then in that case, instead of being like this, should we just go in when it’s dark and bring her out in secret?
JH: Are you crazy? As if that would be easy. Also, if we go and she says “I haven’t asked to be savedâ€, then what would we do?
SH: That definitely won’t be the case. Her gaze. Like 3 years ago, was a desperately pleading gaze.
(DC’s coworker comes upstairs)
Coworker: Seok Dong Chul, aren’t you working? If the president finds out that you're doing other things while you’re supposed to be working, there will trouble.
DC: I’m going. (everyone gets up) So, when are you going to do?
SH: Early in the morning today. The timing is their worship service time.
DC: Okay, I’ll see you early in the morning then.
JH: Dong Chul, work hard.
Coworker: (coming back out of the shadows) Hey, Han Sang Hwan, do you know how Dong Chul lives? During the days, he works as a deliveryman. At nights, he works here.
SH: What are you trying to say?
Coworker: He’s now trying to figure out his life, so don’t mix him up in your little games. If something happens to you, you have the backing of your father, however, that kid has nothing.
SH: Don’t think that you know everything because what’s visible is all you see.
Coworker: No matter what you say, you and Dong Chul live in different worlds. And, that is also your fate. (SH goes towards the coworker)
JH and MH: Don’t. Don’t.
Coworker: Go ahead and hit me. Anyway, your father will protect you, won’t he?
SH: Worlds? Fate? I’m going to change those.
(Coworker smirks and leaves.)

SM Father: Do you know how shocked I was earlier? How dare you touch Father Baek’s hands? What will you do if something bad happens when you do that?
SM: What about me? Do you not care at all about how I might have been injured?
SM Father: No, how could I not care? Of course, I’m worried. But, Sang Mi…
SM: You said that he was capable of miracles. Even if he touches fire, it’s not hot for him, and that he can even cure diseases. You said he had those kinds of salvation abilities! So. Because of one drop of blood shed, why is that a big deal?
SM Father: Dad is just worried that New Heaven’s God might throw you away. That’s what I’m worried about.
SM: Dad. The dad in my memories is only of someone who loved and cared for us so much, and I hope that the memory of such a dad wasn’t erased. The reason that I have been able to endure mom and dad until now is because I had the memory of dad back then. But every time I see the dad who is changing in front of me, I’m scared that the memory of my dad back then will disappear. So, please, for my sake, don’t keep pushing me into strange things any more. Please. Please, stop doing that.
SM Father: It’s because I love you and worry about you that I’m doing this. If you can become the Beloved and are able to be saved, then dad will do whatever it takes.
SM: Dad.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Save Me" Episode 7

photo882529.jpg&key=9696cfc333d8194d0a03

While our heroes figure out how to be heroic, Sang-mi picks herself back up and makes the decision to lead the rescue. The "Spiritual Father's" plans are revealed as more twisted and menacing than previously hinted, while Apostle Kang's past starts crawling back as she feels the pressure. You take the cake for messed up people, Muji.

Poor Sang-mi (Seo Ye-ji) takes one hit after another, but there may be some hope for the only parent she has left. Bo-eun (Yoon Yoo-sun) seems to be noticing the truth through her delusions, but Sang-mi is still alone here and so her determination to fight for her and her mother is crucial. I am glad that she begins this fight before help arrives, as it gives her agency and keeps her away from damsel-in-distress territory. The Apostles' worried expression when they see her newfound resolve is delightful.

The joy is short-lived, however, as Baek's (Jo Sung-ha) plans start to take shape. Surely enough this miasma of a man wants a pretty young bride and the talk of atonement through blood is pushing us well into the sacrificial virgin territory. His father-in-not-law is honored, of course. I was holding on to some hope that he would draw the line at the threat of rape and death for his child, but it does not look like it. I therefore hope that the drama will not use the inadequate excuse of drugs for forced forgiveness.

We finally get some backstory on our villains, however and it seems that Apostle Kang (Park Ji-yeong) may be the worst offender here, if her story parallels Joo-ho's (Jung Hae-kyun). Her disdain for Sang-mi has been palpable, yet her previous panic upon the approach of our heroes and her knee-jerk reaction here show some twisted form of concern. Was Yoo-ra another bride who failed to escape with the help of students or does Kang's story also begin with the loss of a child at the hands of peers?

Speaking of said students, the show's portrayal of our male heroes satisfies me greatly. I was afraid that Sang-hwan (Taecyeon) would get the revenge drama treatment of going away for a few years and coming back a heroic genius, but the series reminds us that these men are still essentially kids. I also get my wish of finding out why no one visited Dong-cheol (Woo Do-hwan) upon his release.

The two young men have finally reunited and while their misunderstandings and bitterness still linger, they can at least work on those as they work on their rescue operation. Guseonwon is powerful, however and so I hope that the necessary allies in law enforcement and politics can become clearer and start joining our Team Good as we go into the second half of this story with episode eight.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Save Me" Episode 8

photo882586.jpg&key=5203b8cecd489ad66f89

After a long and arduous journey, the time has come for the heroine of "Save Me" to find some hope. Our heroes reunite and rediscover themselves as a group despite the lingering bitterness, but their actions make Father Baek more aggressive. Another part of the story has been brewing in Muji and I wonder when and how it will all connect.

It is such a bittersweet moment to see Sang-mi's (Seo Ye-ji) face when she finally knows that help is coming. It is also lovely to see the boys back together, but their methods and eagerness worry me. Sang-hwan (Taecyeon) wants to deny his privilege, but privilege does not work that way. Going up against the cult too fast can backfire and it is people like its victims and Dong-cheol (Woo Do-hwan) who will pay the price if it does.

However, I cannot deny how good it feels to finally have some hope for our resolute heroine and for destroying this dangerous organization. The boys may experience growing pains as they figure out how to tackle attacking a dragon with a pebble, but the story has been so dark, so devoid of hope and so doused in oppressive atmosphere that the halfway mark is a good point to give viewers a more solid break. Still, I do wonder what the boys could use aside from said pebble.

I assume it may have something to do with the subplot of Governor Han (Son Byung-ho), the town's criminal organizations, detective Lee (Jang Hyuk-jin) and now Joon-goo (Go Joon). This bit has been confusing me for a while now. How is this all connected with the cult or how will it become connected? It keeps my interest because I assume it will, but to this point it looks like its own series within a series. It will become tiresome quickly unless the connection to the main story is established soon.

The series continues to build its Guseonwon villains and Apostle Kang (Park Ji-yeong) is getting very interesting. Part of me wants to believe that she lost her child before joining, rather than that she provided her as a "bride", but that is exactly what Joo-ho (Jung Hae-kyun) is doing. The cracks are definitely showing among Guseonwon's members, however and those in doubt will act rashly and slip up.

They will have to, because evidence seems scarce. The Guseonwon basement is not the torture chamber I had imagined. If it is indeed funded by powerful connections and follower "donations" alone, how deep will our heroes have to go in order to find strong enough criminal evidence to use against it? Whatever or whoever it is that they will be aided by, I hope we see them quickly.

  • Rescue Me: Episode 7rescueme07-34291.jpg

Danger draws breathtakingly closer to Sang-mi with every passing day, and there’s no one for her to rely on but herself as the cult finally reveals the dark plans they have in store for her. Our bumpkin bikers have their own difficulties to face outside the compound with broken fences in need of mending, but here’s hoping that they can learn to work together to help save our heroine.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

rescueme07-04951.jpg rescueme07-03811-1.jpg

Sang-mi’s father prays in the house until he hears the clanging noises from outside caused by the boys jumping over the fence. He makes his way outside, but sees nothing as he cautiously rounds each corner.

After a few close calls, it turns out that the boys have taken refuge on the roof of the house. They stay quiet while Dad makes a phone call to Disciple Jo.

When Dad finally makes his way back into the house, they sigh in relief and decide to come back another day—until Jung-hoon realizes that he’s dropped his phone during the botched reconnaissance mission.

Offering to retrieve it for him, Sang-hwan makes his way down the stairs. When he picks up the phone, he looks straight into the window of the room Sang-mi is staying in and sees Sang-mi, unmoving, as she faces a mirror hung on the wall.

Dong-chul sits in the police station quietly as Officer Choi questions the woman he’d stepped in to save. Officer Woo makes his way to Dong-chul and grills him about his presence in the station so soon after his release. “You should get your act together if you’ve been through all that,†Officer Woo says scoldingly, while Dong-chul meekly apologizes.

Sang-hwan joins the other two back on the roof. Jung-hoon is all set to leave, but Sang-hwan holds him back. “Since we’re already here, let’s check it out one more time,†he says thoughtfully.

Jung-hoon exclaims that they’ve almost been caught already, but Sang-hwan has a plan in mind: “We should be bold and ring the doorbell.â€

COMMENTS:

Yeah, Sang-hwan! Let’s hope he actually makes good on that declaration. And that Dong-chul joins him, because our friends could definitely use a boost to accomplish their rescue mission. He’s definitely made strides in terms of responding to injustice, but he also has a tendency to be reactive rather than proactive.

A lot of glimpses into the past were revealed this episode. The tragedy of Dong-chul’s imprisonment intensified as we found out exactly how his grandmother died, and that he’d wanted to become a police officer. When he screamed that Sang-hwan had killed him and his grandmother both, I really believed it. There’s a part of Dong-chul that he’ll never get back, even if he punches Sang-hwan a thousand times.

Surprisingly, we also got insight into why Disciple Kang has been so lenient on and almost protective of Sang-mi. I wonder if Yu-ra’s death had anything to do with the cult, or if the death of Yu-ra made her more susceptible to joining the cult later on, like it did with the Im Family.

The cult itself is horrifying for reasons even beyond what happens within the compound. Guseonwon has a long reach into the community, as we can see with the police and the hospital, and its insidious grip means that Sang-mi has nowhere to turn for true escape from the cult, even if she didn’t have Mom to consider.

On that note though, I have to admit that I’m slightly frustrated with the treatment of Sang-mi’s character. Any time she attempts to escape, it barely feels like there was a deliberate decision involved. Has she really been doing this for three years? There have been so many failures that there’s no longer any real emotional stakes involved, and I would have expected Sang-mi to have a smarter plan of escape by now.

But I don’t blame Sang-mi herself for this lack of forethought. Victims of abuse are often deliberately isolated and made to feel like they have no way out. Guseonwon has taken this a step further and presents Sang-mi as crazy to the community and to Sang-mi herself. After three years of this, I’d imagine that Sang-mi is traumatized and emotionally numbed, and I’m amazed she’s been able to hold onto herself for so long.

Part of the reason for my frustration, however, is that the writing is lacking in a few areas. One is the characterization. Characters (cough—Sang-hwan) can make dumb choices, sure, but when I don’t understand why they make those choices or what it means to who they are, I can’t empathize with what they do and the consequences of those actions. A lot of emotional value to the plot is lost this way, and when a big chunk of the rest of the plot is shock value, it feels like the writer is relying too much on shortcuts.

Another is consistency: The time skip was an understandable choice that really emphasizes the terrible situation Sang-mi is in, but in some other parts of the story, it’s like time hasn’t passed at all. Sang-hwan feels guilt over what happened, but he only confronted his father on his promise three years later? And why does the whole town act like the cult is normal, but the biker gang revealed that it’s known that they’re a cult?

But I’ll give the show’s writing the benefit of the doubt, for now—after all, they did address the fact that Sang-hwan never seemed to see Dong-chul around town, which I didn’t expect. (Meanwhile, he can run into Sang-mi twice in about as many days.) I nearly cheered when Dong-chul’s friend told Sang-hwan off for disrupting Dong-chul’s job/life as if it were the most urgent thing in the world but hasn’t even tried to contact him otherwise.

The cult has stepped up their plans with Sang-mi’s new status as Spiritual Mother and ominous allusions to the Boat of Salvation. Even though it seems like Sang-mi is stuck in an endless cycle of escape and recapture, mentally and physically, I hope that the resolution isn’t simply a matter of the biker gang swooping in for a rescue. Hopefully, Sang-mi’s iron will and the will of her would-be rescuers will lead to a strength that’s greater than the sum of its parts.
