Honestly, I can't say that I'm not happy with these overall - I really can't.  It's been an especially great year for MAXIMUM THE HORMONE award-wise.

I do wonder though, is this because they didn't release for so long?

I think that might have a little to do with it, but if you remember the music store charts at the end of last year, "Yoshu Fukushu" was a really popular release.  It doesn't surprise me that it is getting some nods at awards shows like this and the CD Shop Awards.

But was it as popular as it was because it was a comeback album? If they were releasing albums regularly, would there be as much hype as there is?

Would it have been AS popular if they were on a consistent release schedule?  Possibly (and probably) not.  Would it still have been popular?  Yes.  The difficult thing with this case is that it's hard to say whether or not they'd have built an even larger and more consistent fan-base if they had kept releasing at their normal pace over the past 6 years.  Since, in some cases, hiatuses like the one they took cripple acts (i.e. GReeeeN, who have never reached the levels of their pre-2010 hiatus).  Though yes, your point is taken.
