i love it lmao. yang sejong has bright future ahead his acting is pretty solid. i also like his chemistry with mi rae though things gonna be awkward now since he is her dad's clone rkrjfjfjkf but i liked what chief said, you are sung joon and that's it. i don't care about that doc i'm <333 i like how relationships developed slow in this fast paced drama, nothing felt unnatural. i didn't know writer was also writer of queen in hyun's man and nine, but now i get it seeing the twists in this one. My heart goes out to Sung Hoon, knowing what he has been through no wonder he became like this, the angst is too real. Also omg can Sooyeon get a break! The amount of relief I felt when she and Chief FINALLY reunited.. No rainbows and unicorns tho I should've expected after all those cute scenes rlytearpls.png I can't wait for last two episodes, Idk how this was received but it's really great so i hope show got some great ratings!

Love ur thoughts there, otherwise i hope the final eps soon will not be disappointed hurrplz.png

  • Duel: Episode 13duel1302237.jpg

It’s never easy realizing that the truth you’ve always believed about your family is completely wrong, especially if that “truth†existed to cover-up a potentially dangerous reality. As surprising discoveries are made about various characters’ biological parentage, everyone comes one step closer to figuring out where Doctor Lee’s original vaccination has disappeared to.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

duel1300014a.jpg duel1300060a.jpg

Sung-hoon points his gun at Chairman Park, demanding to know why the chairman created him. Even though Sung-hoon knows a cloned embryo was needed for the vaccine, he doesn’t understand why Chairman Park would clone a human and raise him for over twenty years. Angry, Sung-hoon asks Chairman Park why he would put him through so much torture.

Chairman Park simply says that he needed Sung-hoon. It started out as idle curiosity when Chairman Park asked Doctor Lee if, since they could clone an embryo, they could clone a full human. Doctor Lee told the chairman it wasn’t worth it, since clones would die early due to the aging organs, and Doctor Lee thought it was cruel to create a clone only to watch it die.

duel1300070a.jpg

But Chairman Park realized that if they could clone someone with the same rare disease that he has, then his lab would be able to more effectively research cures. After all, the clone would be dying anyway, so it seemed perfectly justifiable in Chairman Park’s eyes.

Chairman Park is convinced that Sung-hoon would have done the same if he’d been in the chairman’s shoes. The chairman points out that Sung-hoon has killed others in an effort to save his own life. Which is true, but… it’s not exactly the same, since Sung-hoon didn’t purposefully create Byung-joon, Joo-shik, Dong-seul, or anyone else, in order to kill them later.

That might not have been the wisest argument to make, as Sung-hoon smoothly switches from his gun to a knife, which he now presses against Chairman Park’s throat. Sung-hoon angrily spits out that he should make sure Chairman Park suffers before he dies.

duel1300138a.jpg duel1300223a.jpg

Sung-hoon warns the chairman that he’ll repeatedly stab Chairman Park just deep enough to cause pain, but not enough to kill him. He wants Chairman Park to experience the constant pain that he has endured.

Chairman Park manages to block Sung-hoon, desperately warning Sung-hoon that he’s making the wrong choice. The chairman shows a video call from Big Boss, revealing that Doctor Mom (unaware she’s being filmed) is standing in the middle of Sung-hoon’s lair. Sung-hoon’s eyes grow wide with shock as he realizes Doctor Mom is still alive.

duel1300257a.jpg duel1300276a.jpg

Meanwhile, at the nearly deserted police station, Deuk-chun recalls his meeting with Nurse Ryu’s old friend. He’s not Mi-rae’s father, and the man reveals that after their other friend died, the pregnant Nurse Ryu had a miscarriage due to shock. Mi-rae is, therefore, not Nurse Ryu’s biological daughter. Chairman Park tells Big Boss (who’s secretly filming Doctor Mom) that if Big Boss doesn’t get a call from him in five minutes, then Big Boss should kill Doctor Mom. Chairman Park taunts Sung-hoon, telling the younger man to go ahead and stab him — if Chairman Park dies, then Doctor Mom will die, too.

The chairman demands to know where Doctor Lee hid the real vaccine. But that just clues Sung-hoon into the fact that Chairman Park hasn’t been fully cured. Sung-hoon tells Chairman Park that it will be more enjoyable to watch the chairman slowly die from the disease, so Sung-hoon will spare his life for now.  The five minutes are nearly up, and with literally a few seconds to spare, Sung-hoon steps back as he orders Chairman Park to call Big Boss. Doctor Mom is still alive. Whew.

As Sung-hoon turns to leave, Chairman Park asks him why he’s so angry at the chairman. After all, it was Doctor Mom who created the clones in the first place. The chairman tells Sung-hoon that everything Sung-hoon knows about Doctor Mom is a lie, including the name she used back then. Chairman Park continues to twist the metaphorical knife as he informs Sung-hoon that Doctor Mom has been working as the head of Sanyoung’s research lab, so she’s had plenty of opportunity to save Sung-hoon if she wanted to. Sung-hoon is stunned when the chairman smugly says that Doctor Mom was the one who authorized all the experiments that were done to Sung-hoon.

duel1300595a.jpg duel1300580a.jpg

Deuk-chun watches over his sleeping daughter as he remembers an earlier conversation he had with Doctor Mom, who reveals her side of the story. After she was hit by the car, Sung-hoon was taken back to the lab, and Doctor Mom was informed that Sung-hoon had died there. She seems genuinely sad to realize that Sung-hoon has spent so long locked up in the lab, suffering and in pain due to all the experiments.

She blames herself for the original cloning experiment twenty-four years ago, even though she claims she was deceived by Chairman Park so there’s some blame to go around. Doctor Mom had wanted to continue her husband’s work after Doctor Lee died.

Doctor Mom is surprised to learn that Doctor Lee was able to fully develop the vaccine before he died, though. Doctor Lee never mentioned it to her, and Deuk-chun realizes that this means she doesn’t know where it could be.

duel1300752a.jpg

Gulping from a bottle of whiskey, Sung-hoon tries to wash away the the idea that the only person he’s ever considered to be his mother also allowed him to go through all those painful experiments. Chairman Park’s voice echoes in Sung-hoon’s mind, pointing out that Doctor Mom never treated Sung-hoon like her own child.

At the hospital, Big Boss offers to torture Sung-hoon so Chairman Park can figure out what happened to the vaccine. But Chairman Park believes that Sung-hoon would be able to resist any physical torture (thanks to Sung-hoon’s years as a lab rat), so instead, they have to use psychological torture.

Chairman Park smiles to himself as he explains that he’s just feeding all the doubts Sung-hoon has had over the years, and soon he’ll convince Sung-hoon that Chairman Park is the only person Sung-hoon can trust.

  • Duel: Episode 14duel1402202a.jpg

Parent-child dynamics fill this episode, from dysfunctional blood bonds to supportive “you crashed into my life through bizarre circumstances and now I feel responsible for you†family-by-choice bonds. Everyone still wants the original vaccine (which is closer than anyone could have imagined), although figuring out who most deserves the cure may prove to be a difficult moral quandary.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

duel1400039a.jpg duel1400145a.jpg

A motorcycle careens through the streets, and at just the last moment, Mi-rae pushes Doctor Mom aside and ends up being hit by the motorcycle herself. The unconscious Mi-rae is then rushed to the hospital. As Mi-rae is whisked away into the emergency operating room, Doctor Mom weeps and cries out for Mi-rae, feeling responsible for what happened. Deuk-chun arrives at the hospital just then to join Doctor Mom, Sung-joon, and Sunbae, as they nervously wait to hear about Mi-rae.

After the emergency surgery, the doctor reports that Mi-rae’s organs suffered a lot of damage and internal bleeding. The doctor gently tells Doctor Mom and everyone else that they should prepare for the worst. Seo-jin is the one who ordered the hit on Doctor Mom. Seo-jin worries when Motorcycle Man doesn’t pick up the phone and wonders if he successfully completed the job.

Deuk-chun sits by his sleeping daughter, who’s also still in the hospital, when he gets a call from Hyung-shik that they’ve caught the hit-and-run motorcyclist. As Sunbae, Sung-joon, and Doctor Mom sit in the waiting room outside the ICU, Deuk-chun finds them and asks exactly what happened.

duel1400250a.jpg duel1400270a.jpg

Doctor Mom tells Deuk-chun that the motorcycle was headed straight for her. This means it was probably Sanyoung responsible for the hit-and-run, but Doctor Mom says that it couldn’t be Chairman Park since he’s still waiting for the vaccine. She deduces that it must have been Seo-jin who ordered the hit.

Since Doctor Mom is the head of Sanyoung research, she technically works for Chairman Oppa. Which means that if Doctor Mom figures out the cure for Chairman Park, then Oppa will automatically inherit the company. Seo-jin likely wants Doctor Mom out of the way so Seo-jin could find an alternate source for the cure. Deuk-chun finds it unbelievable that Seo-jin would try to kill someone just for that, but Doctor Mom knows all too well that Chairman Park’s family are exactly the type of people to get rid of anyone who stands in their way.

COMMENTS

I thought that as the show started to head down the final stretch, the densely packed episodes would start to thin out. Instead, here I am again, dizzy as I try to make sense of the fact that Mi-rae has already lost the mother she only discovered hours ago she even had. That Sung-hoon is firmly in the chairman’s evil pocket since he believes that Doctor Mom purposefully betrayed him (even though his inner boyish heart wants to believe that his “mother†loves him as much as she says she does).

That Seo-jin is realizing all her efforts to undermine her brother to gain her father’s respect and attention have been as futile as ever, so maybe she shouldn’t have tried so hard to save her father’s life (and then all of this would have never happened, since she wouldn’t have ordered Sung-hoon to kidnap Soo-yeon). That Mi-rae’s bone marrow might be able to cure someone, but only one person. That even though the clones live with the burden of feeling like they’re not “real,†the important people in their lives believe that they are (and Sanyoung can go to hell for treated them as lab rats). That I’m easily confused when Yang Se-jong wears outfits that are associated with different characters.

I’m also suspicious about Sunbae, who’s totally grown on me over the past few weeks and who I can’t imagine not being a part of this little odd-duck family. There was something sneaky about the way he had to excuse himself for an “emergency work meeting.†Not that I doubt he’s meeting someone, but I’m not convinced it’s just about work. He’s been loyal to Mi-rae all this time (and for who knows how long before she started investigating Sanyoung), but now I’m wondering if somehow he knows about Mi-rae’s past. It would break my heart if Sunbae turns out to be something other than the sweet, supportive, goofy guy we’ve come to know and love. I really need some genuine people in this show and in our character’s lives — people who have no ulterior motives except to be a friend.

I’m already grieving the loss of Doctor Mom, and not just because three of the characters have lost their mother/mother-figure. But also because it feels like there’s no way that Sung-hoon can come back from this. He shot the one person that he spent his life vowing to seek vengeance on her behalf, assuming that she was killed through Deuk-chun’s negligence to help them seek safety twelve years ago. He killed the one person who would be able to figure out a cure for him and Sung-joon, so that they could live as “real†humans without their cloned organs failing them. Even if he blames Sung-joon for it, Sung-hoon is the one who pulled the trigger. While I’ve been holding out hope that Sung-hoon would get his redemption arc despite all the other people he’s killed, I’m not sure if there’s a way he’d even want to redeem himself after killing Doctor Mom. Sung-hoon almost seems like he’s set on a suicide mission, desperate to take down as many people as possible who have hurt him before he ends his own pain forever.

Which is utterly heart-breaking to think about, especially since we know he wasn’t always like this. That glimmer of hope I saw in him as he made his way to the hospital to see Doctor Mom reminded me of the happy boy that chattered excitedly to his “hyung,†filled with wonder of the outside world. That joyful spirit has been utterly broken by Sanyoung and I definitely want them to pay in the worst way. But not by sacrificing Sung-hoon. Except, again, I’m not sure if there’s another way out.

Somehow, though, the vaccine must get made, if only to save the lives of Soo-yeon and the clones (because if Chairman Park gets his hands on it first, this show and I are through). I don’t know how the cure is possible without Doctor Mom’s know-how or Mi-rae’s body. But there’s just got to be a way, there’s just got to be! Maybe one of Sung-joon’s naps will finally reveal how Doctor Lee made the vaccine in the first place and Sung-joon can somehow recreate it and save Soo-yeon, himself, and his brother. And maybe Doctor Mom. Sniffle, sniffle. Allow me just a little while longer to blindly tell myself the bullet didn’t instantly kill her, and that she can still somehow be saved with the miraculously healing cure.

Duel Episodes 13 & 14: double agent

ae40c8fe-71ca-4c73-997c-9ca8538010a9.png

Welcome back Duelers! Have you been keeping track of all the double crossing, double identities, and double whammies this drama has put us through this week. Please join Debo, Kate, and myself as we discuss all things Duel. Also, this dramaclub is NOT sponsored by Subway, lol.

Kate: Now that we’re reaching the final stretch, anything can happen. Major characters can die, even bigger, game-changing reveals can occur, and, of course, we can take even more trips to Subway for product placing sandwiches. We got a little bit of all of that this week. What were your favorite developments? I’m particularly excited to see Prosecutor Choi stepping up to go undercover to try and put things right. San Young Pharmaceuticals needs to come down! I’m a little worried, though, that Detective Jang won’t cooperate with her enough and that will hamper the investigation.
