[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Duel" Episode 10

Things get too complicated for a series two thirds into its total duration, with some changes making me wonder whether the creators had been winging it by this point. We have a new pivotal character who turns everything we have known upside down, Deuk-cheon's connection to Seong-hoon is revealed and Seong Joon discovers some important information about his memories as he walks right into the lion's den to save Soo-yeon.

I am trying to wrap my head around the use this not-mommy issues twist with our new scientist character has and I am having some difficulty. Perhaps her function is to justify Seong-hoon's (Yang Se-jong) behavior a bit more, since his turn to misunderstood, tortured soul has been happening for a while now and Dramaland loves its pretty boy villains with parental problems. It just feels like a jarring entry for someone who has not been adequately teased before.

photo864023.jpg&key=9d4011895464837e4aa3photo864021.jpg&key=bfb262dc5a8dbb7fa9af

If she has been part of the series from the start then the creators have done a poor job introducing it. Her character carries zero emotional weight because the topic of family and the perception of clones when it comes to loved ones have never been explored in this series. It is too little too late to bring about the topic of family into a series which has not really explored or developed its clones in any significant way. At least not Seong-hoon and he is the one who has clearly taken this to heart.

On the other hand, Seong-joon's ethics when it comes to Soo-yeon's (Lee Na-yoon) safety and his responsibility in this mess have been developed a bit more adequately and so his face off with Seong-hoon's masters carries weight. Viewers would naturally worry about Soo-yeon, who is an innocent child and we worry about Seong-joon, who is a lead we have seen kindness from. The danger of his visit to the hospital matters because the two characters who are in danger do.

photo864022.jpg&key=db0cead3274bff6a9ba5photo864020.jpg&key=c7865a44a44479241ce3

The idea of the twins changing identities is not very surprising or interesting, but it does bring about some laughter about how useless the villains here are. Here they are thinking Lee Yong-seob's memories are gone forever and the clone who has them was simply the wrong one. I can see why Seong-hoon would be angry now, but I cannot see why he would be angry at Seong-joon, unless he blames everyone willy-nilly.

As for Deuk-cheon (Jeong Jae-yeong) and his connection, I sincerely hope there is more to Seong-hoon's hate than the little snippet we see in this episode. Keeping silent for a bribe is something worth holding a grudge for, but if a busy cop does not buy an evil scientist story from a child on a late night, I cannot exactly call them a traitor. I wish "Duel" will show focus and at least make its final stretch exciting.

Ah, the mysteries of cloning. As Sung-joon tries to understand everything that’s flooding back into his brain, the desperate hunt for Doctor Lee’s organs continues. There are also some surprising discoveries that may shift the power balance — but in whose favor?

EPISODE 9 RECAP

Instead of a flash-forward starting off the episode, it’s actually a flashback of Sung-joon pre-memory-loss as he secretly takes photos of Byung-joon, Joo-shik, and Dong-seul. Pre-memory-loss Sung-joon also researches Doctor Lee and cloning, which explains the collage collection that the current Sung-joon finds on the makeshift wall in the garage living quarters. There’s a nifty shot of Sung-joon, as the memories return, watching his earlier self gather the information.

Meanwhile, Deuk-chun and Sung-hoon are at the abandoned warehouse for a hostage exchange. When Deuk-chun demands to see Soo-yeon before he hands over Dong-seul, Director Baek carries her out. Whatever sleeping medication they gave her seems to have worn off, and she pleads with Director Baek to let her go so she can return to her father.

But Sung-hoon refuses to hand her over until Deuk-chun produces Dong-seul. Deuk-chun reassures Soo-yeon that she just needs to wait a little bit longer, and then he returns to the car to pull Dong-seul out of the trunk. Dong-seul, bound and gagged, is shocked to see Sung-hoon, who greats him with a smirk. Deuk-chun isn’t going to hand Dong-seul over that easily, though. Deuk-chun points a gun at Dong-seul’s kidney as he tells Sung-hoon to let Soo-yeon go, or the kidney will be destroyed. In response, Sung-hoon points his gun at Soo-yeon’s head, telling Deuk-chun to leave Dong-seul in the middle of the warehouse first.

Dong-seul walks forward and obediently stands in the middle between Deuk-chun and Sung-hoon. Soo-yeon, free to return her father, runs toward him with a smile on her face, yelling “Dad!†But as she reaches the middle of the warehouse, Dong-seul breaks free from his bonds and grabs her. Dong-seul holds a knife to Soo-yeon’s neck as he warns everyone not to come closer.

The warehouse is not as abandoned as it looks, because Jo-hye and the rest of her team are hidden about with their guns at the ready as they watch the hostage exchange. Deuk-chun spots Jo-hye as she nods to her team, who immediately step out from their hiding spots and surround everyone, each one pointing a gun at someone else. Jo-hye points her gun at Dong-seul, ordering him to let Soo-yeon go. It’s eerily reminiscent of the time when Deuk-chun’s wife was held hostage, and fearing that Soo-yeon will also be accidentally killed if Jo-hye shoots, Deuk-chun screams at everyone to stop.

Meanwhile, Sung-joon’s memories continue to return, overwhelming him. He recalls tiny Sung-joon and Sung-hoon sitting face-to-face on their hospital beds, looking like mirror reflections of each other as tiny Sung-hoon proudly shows off his portrait drawing of Sung-joon. They’re so adorable.

Back to the warehouse, where Jo-hye gets Dong-seul’s daughter on the phone to prove that Min-ji is safe. Jo-hye explains that the person who’s trying to hurt Dong-seul is really Sung-hoon, and that the prosecutor/detective team will help him if Dong-seul lets Soo-yeon go.

Dong-seul agrees, and Jo-hye switches her aim to Sung-hoon, ordering him to put down the gun. Sung-hoon is still aiming at Dong-seul. With a glance at Director Baek, Sung-hoon says it’s a pity, but he has no choice to break his promise to Dong-seul.

As Director Baek shoots out the fuse box, sending the warehouse into darkness, Sung-hoon shoots Dong-seul. The bullet hits him in the shoulder but thankfully misses Soo-yeon.

Everyone scrambles in the darkness as Deuk-chun tries to save Soo-yeon, but Director Baek has already put her and Dong-seul in the car. Sung-hoon has his gun pointed directly at Jo-hye. He’s so close that the barrel of the gun touches her forehead.

  • Duel: Episode 10duel1001047a.jpg

It seems that cloning could solve a lot of the nature-versus-nurture debate, since we get a glimpse into Sung-hoon and Sung-joon’s pasts that make us wonder about the “what could have beens†if things had gone differently. The important question, though, is whether Sung-joon will be able to successfully pass himself off as Sung-hoon and somehow rescue Soo-yeon.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Flash-forward intro: Director Baek and Sung-joon-as-Sung-hoon, pushing an unconscious Soo-yeon in a wheelchair, wait for an elevator. Director Baek makes a call on his phone, then asks Sung-joon-as-Sung-hoon if he left his phone behind, revealing that the person he’s dialing is Sung-hoon. Sung-joon bluffs that he forgot his phone, and Director Baek seems to take it in stride.

Suddenly Director Baek grabs Sung-joon’s ass (or maybe just his back), but it’s only to verify that the person calling himself Sung-hoon isn’t carrying a gun like usual. Director Baek accuses him of actually being Sung-joon, then lifts up his shirt to reveal the bandage on Sung-joon’s side. Director Baek rips off the bandage to prove that there’s no gunshot wound.

A couple of doctors administer the second stem cell injection into Chairman Park’s IV bag. The head doctor places her confidence on data and statistics, which means she believes that the injections are working. Head Doctor relays this information to Seo-jin and Seo-jin’s brother, much to Seo-jin’s delight.

Also, Head Doctor’s name is HAN YOO-RA, which makes me realize this must be the “Director Han†from Seo-jin’s caller ID and not the guy I’ve been calling Big Boss. I’m suddenly overcome with the urge to mail OCN a big box of “Hello, my name is…†name tags. Doctor Han reassures Seo-jin and Oppa that they’ll continue to administer all the injections to the Chairman since there haven’t been adverse reactions so far. Doctor Han does caution that since their first test patient, Soo-yeon, is no longer available, she can’t guarantee the results. But Seo-jin trusts Doctor Han and believes her father will get better soon. Oppa doesn’t quite share her optimism, warning Seo-jin not to set such high expectations. After Oppa leaves, Seo-jin calls to check on Soo-yeon, making sure she’s been moved safely.

duel1000220a.jpg duel1000210a.jpg

In a secret meeting with the now-nameless Big Boss, Seo-jin orders him to bring Sung-hoon to her. Seo-jin is determined to get her hands on the organ donor list. Big Boss warns her that Sung-hoon won’t give up the information too easily, but she points out that they’ve fed, housed, and “tamed†him, so Sung-hoon should be grateful to them.

If Sung-hoon doesn’t agree to tell her about the list, he can just go back to where he came from. Big Boss: “Where, the Chairman’s research lab?†Seo-jin scoffs. No, she orders Big Boss to set up a room in the hospital basement that will look exactly like the research lab. She’ll take out the rest of “their ward’s†organs there, and she wonders if they will look any different from normal organs.

duel1000320a.jpg duel1000299a.jpg

At Sung-hoon’s lair, Sung-joon preps to take care of Sung-hoon’s wound and Deuk-chun finds Sung-hoon’s phone. Deuk-chun calls Director Baek, who assumes that Sung-hoon wants to know where they’ve taking Soo-yeon. At Deuk-chun’s urging, Sung-joon cautiously asks Director Baek where Soo-yeon is, but Director Baek tells him that he’s almost at the lair and they can talk in person.

Soon, Director Baek with the Big Boss security team arrive. Sung-joon-as-Sung-hoon pretends he’s just emerged from the shower, and calls Soo-yeon “Soo-yeonie†instead of “Jang Soo-yeon†— both blunders that Director Baek notices and finds odd. But Sung-joon “proves†he was shot by flashing open a corner of his bathrobe, revealing the bandage on his side.

duel1000452a.jpg duel1000562a.jpg

Using his scornful Sung-hoon voice, Sung-joon tells Director Baek that he patched up his own wound and he’s better now. Sung-joon also distracts Director Baek so he can turn off the video feed to the basement cameras. That way Director Baek can’t see that the real Sung-hoon is passed out on the hospital bed.

Sung-joon also turns on the intercom, and now Deuk-chun, hiding behind the basement door, can hear Sung-joon and Director Baek’s conversation. As promised, Big Boss sets up a medical room, and based on the straps he tests, this will not be a pleasant experience for whomever is going to be bound to that bed.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

  • Duel: This drama became ten times more exciting when they had one clone impersonate the other. Whyyyyy didn’t we do this sooner? It was so suspenseful and nerve-wracking, thinking he’d slip up and blow his cover with every lie he had to tell. It finally felt like they were making good use of the double-clone storyline in the way that I wanted. Plus, I really got a kick out of it when he just casually unlocked his clone’s house using a retinal scan. That was just funny.
