Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching?!

girlfriday

  • Duel: It’s still a little slow going, but this show has a detective and a clone on the lam. Together. I mean, I’m not gonna not watch that show. I just wish the reveals would come a bit faster. If the clone is a clone of an evil mastermind, shouldn’t he be quicker on the uptake?

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Duel" Episode 6

photo858973.jpg

It is about time our characters start getting a clue about the fact that this case involves human cloning and I am not surprised to see who the ones making this discovery are. Seong-joon's hinted poor health takes a turn for the worse, leaving Deuk-cheon and Mi-rae hoping for his recovery. Meanwhile, Jo-hye tightens her grip on the situation.

Now is a good time to meet our mystery players, but I am happy to see them remain mysterious for now. The fact that we are dealing with two clones and one original is thankfully confirmed and although we still have the shared memories to deal with, the series is not going off the deep pseudo-scientific end just yet. The original doctor's body is clearly important enough to keep and so I stand by my assumption of it containing valuable science.

photo858969.jpgphoto858972.jpg

Perhaps this is just my suspicion over Korean dramas' love of birth secrets talking, but I sincerely hope that the our clones' originator was not Mi-rae's (Seo Eun-su) father. That would get very awkward very quickly given the nice rapport she and Seong-joon (Yang Se-jong) have. I cannot help but become alarmed when the good ol' "I have a mystery parent" trope rears its usually ugly head in such shows. This is not a soap opera and it has enough on its plate already.

Looming makjang horrors aside, the Dramagods do listen sometimes and Jo-hye (Kim Jung-eun) is finally piecing things together. My curiosity about why she fights so hard to be powerful has returned and I can finally see her as a person again, rather than the threat of arrest in human form. I believe she will eventually be an ally, because we have been shown enough leniency on her part for her character to be tilting towards the good side. Perhaps she will realize that some things matter more than power.

photo858971.jpgphoto858970.jpg

The series also touches upon the fact that Deuk-cheon (Jeong Jae-yeong) and Seong-joon have not really bonded a lot aside from their common goals and I hope that this is a sign of more dramatic closeness later on. Seong-joon is already a pitiful enough character due to his own problems and being used as a database adds onto them. Deuk-cheon and Mi-rae are clearly nice people who understand this, so I hope to see them bond more.

Seong-hoon has had his share of being used as well and this new information of his abusive childhood might provide some interesting interactions with Soo-yeon (Lee Na-yoon). I am curious to see where the action of the series will go now that Seong-joon's health is critical. I think I have had enough of him as a punching bag and so has he.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Duel" Episode 5

photo858968.jpg

It is a dog eat dog world out there, but when you have several dogs with unclear motivations and stories, it is as confusing a sight as it is a violent one. "Duel" manages to clear some things up while not really revealing much and I feel it is about time the clones start providing story when they meet, rather than just a lot of physical abuse for Seong-joon.

Things remain complicated despite some answers. It looks like our clones originate from someone who was confirmed dead and that explains their age. The question is, why were his organs given away? That is planned action. Did Jeon Byeong-joon (Jo Jae-ryong) use Choi Joo-sik's (Jo Jae-wan) and the others' vengeful rage for his plans? Why this young doctor specifically? The whole situation does not look very professional.

photo858967.jpgphoto858966.jpg

Also, is the reason why Seong-hoon (Yang Se-jong) has markings that he was experimented on and tortured? I would like to know why one clone has clearly been through a lot physically while the other has not. Perhaps Seong-hoon is the original clone created for his originator's memories and Seong-joon is a clone he in turn created in order to do his dirty work while the other is being chased. I have a lot of questions and I do hope they will be answered.

At least now we know that the list is in fact the original doctor's organs. Why those are important to someone powerful I have no clue yet. Maybe the original young doctor had created and tested something on himself which turned him into a universal donor. The science and pseudo-science in this could go wherever the creators feel like at this point. All we know is that the list is important to someone old and possibly related to the original 1993 incident.

photo858965.jpgphoto858964.jpg

As for Deuk-cheon's (Jeong Jae-yeong) story, I still wonder why Soo-yeon (Lee Na-yoon) is kidnapped and still alive. Does her body hold a key to the cure Seong-hoon is looking for? Is the Sanyoung Bioresearch Institute the reason why she was targeted or is it because Seong-hoon simply knew that Deuk-cheon has money? Money he needed to enter the dog fight club as a VIP client, that is.

Questions aside, I am starting to get weary of Jo-hye's (Kim Jung-eun) lack of development. She is the drama's boogeywoman, but she can be used better. I want to see what she is about, what she thinks and feels. Kim Jung-eun can only do so much when it seems that her guidelines are to look creepy and wait for whatever plans they have for her. Give her some love, "Duel".

We finally learn what “the list†is, why it’s so important, and just what lengths someone would go through to get a copy of it. While the connection between the clones still remains a mystery, Sung-joon’s flashes of memories begin to hint that the past is still very much relevant to the present, perhaps more so than anyone can imagine.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Flash-forward intro: Sung-joon, with one hand over Mi-rae’s mouth and another holding a gun, begs her to stay quiet after apologizing for doing this to her.

Outside, Man-choon holds an axe against Deuk-chun’s throat, but when the prosecution team and other detectives arrive, he releases Deuk-chun, who takes the opportunity to steal one of the dropped handguns and take Hyung-shik hostage.

He warns Jo-hye not to follow him or he’ll kill Hyung-shik. Jo-hye doesn’t think he’ll pull the trigger, but both Hyung-shik and Soo-ho know that their chief isn’t in his right mind, and they plead for her not to provoke him.

duel05-00001.jpg duel05-00003.jpg

We rewind back to the office at the dogfighting ring, where Mi-rae is trapped in a hidden room while Joo-shik threatens Sung-joon, who he’s had brought into his office. Joo-shik is confused to see someone he killed, and he asks how Sung-joon is still alive. As we see Sung-hoon bearing the scar that Joo-shik would expect to see on Sung-joon, Joo-shik attempts to strangle Sung-joon to finish the job.

With Joo-shik’s hands around his throat, Sung-joon has a memory of Joo-shik performing surgery on him, and when he asks how Joo-shik could have done that to both him and Byung-joon, Joo-shik is shocked to realize this has to be the same guy he thought he killed years ago. “I saw it with my own eyes. Your stomach was cut open!†Joo-shik raves uncomprehendingly.

As Mi-rae watches through a crack in the door, looking between the scene in front of her and the picture in her hand in confusion, Joo-shik lifts up Sung-joon’s shirt and confirms that there’s no scar from having all his organs removed — so it can’t be the guy they killed. Besides, Joo-shik says, Sung-joon is much too young, only now he really doesn’t know who he is. Before he can get an answer, one of his men announce that their VIP guest is here. That’s enough of a distraction for Joo-shik to order his men to take Sung-joon away until he can deal with him later, but before he leaves, Joo-shik gets in a few enraged kicks that drop the young man to the ground.

duel0500471a.jpg duel0500377a.jpg

Just as he’s about to give Sung-joon a further beating with a baseball bat, the VIP guest arrives, his face hidden by a hoodie. Annoyed, Joo-shik tells him to wait outside a little longer, but the VIP guest — Sung-hoon — turns out the lights and expertly shoots all of Joo-shik’s men in the head. When he turns the lights on again, only Joo-shik and Sung-joon are left (as well as a horrified Mi-rae, who continues to watch from her hiding spot).

Joo-shik attempts to make a deal with his “VIP client†as he wonders why he’s doing all this, at least until he turns around and realizes in astonishment that his VIP client is the same man he thought he killed, the same man as the one lying crumpled on the floor. But Sung-hoon just tells him that he wants “the list.â€

Mi-rae’s sunbae tries calling her back, but she hurriedly cuts it off, worried that Sung-hoon might hear and know she’s there. As Sunbae wonders if something’s happened to her, Man-choon and his gang arrive at the dogfight to loook for Deuk-chun, who tries to hide from them by using Sunbae as a shield. Surprised, Sunbae recognizes Deuk-chun as the chief detective when he worked on a story years ago. He’s adorably excited to figure out what crime the detective is going to deal with there, but Deuk-chun just shoos him away.

duel0500605a.jpg duel0500612a.jpg

In the office, Joo-shik hands over the list of five people who got an organ transplant. He was planning to use it as his last resort to blackmail them if he needed money, but not he’s using it to save his life. He wonders why Sung-hoon wants it, as well how there can be two people with the same face as the guy he killed.

Sung-hoon asks if Joo-shik really killed the original man. Joo-shik shrugs and says he just did as he was ordered to do by Byung-joon. But Sung-hoon just deadpans back that Byung-joon said that he only did what Joo-shik ordered him to do, not the other way around. Laughing, Joo-shik says Byung-joon must be lying, but Sung-hoon says it’s a pity they can’t confirm who’s telling the truth since Byung-joon is dead.

duel0500666a.jpg

His phone buzzes in his pocket, and Sung-hoon says that it’s Joo-shik’s turn. He steps closer as he points his gun at Joo-shik’s head. The other man stutters that he’ll give him everything he has, but Sung-hoon emotionlessly pulls the trigger just as Joo-shik yells that he promised him. Shot at point blank, Joo-shik’s body slumps to the ground as Sung-hoon says, “I never promised you anything.â€

Duel: Episode 6

Each episode gets better and better as we slowly learn more about who everyone is and how they’re all connected. That’s not to say that each new discovery doesn’t come with a million more questions, but at least everyone seems to be on a path that will eventually lead them to the truth — whatever that truth may be.

  • EPISODE 6 RECAP

Flash-forward intro: It’s nighttime as Director Baek follows a car to a deserted field. When the car pulls to the side of the road and parks, he cautiously approaches — but there’s no one inside. That’s because Deuk-chun was waiting for him.

With his gun pointed at Director Baek’s head, Deuk-chun warns him to be cautious when tailing someone, because he could end up being lured. Then he smacks Director Baek with the butt of the gun, knocking him out.

We rewind back to where we left off previously, with Sung-hoon reading the organ donor documents before spinning around to point his gun at an intruder, only to realize that it’s just little Soo-yeon. She tearfully asks him where she is, and when he chides her for wandering around without permission, she apologizes, saying she didn’t know.

duel0600099a.jpg&key=11dea785936a5f76dc8 duel0600090a.jpg&key=5820a6d0ee1e373c3fc

  • Then she asks if he’s a policeman, since her father told her that guns are only used to catch bad guys. She continues to cry as she asks where her father is and when he’s coming to see her. Sung-hoon lowers his gun and tells her to stop crying, and she blubbers that she wants to, but can’t seem to. He tells her that her father will be there soon and escorts her back to the medical room.
  • As he does so, he has a flashback of a little boy — a younger version of himself, based on the “Lee Sung-hoon†name on the boy’s pajamas. With a sad look on his face, the little boy asks the adult Sung-hoon if he thinks he’ll be able to rescue him.

  • With the photo of Mi-rae’s mother in his hands, Sung-joon has a flash of memory, recalling the pregnant Nurse Ryu. He realizes that he must know Mi-rae’s mother after all, and he gets out of the car to run after Mi-rae to tell her. Mi-rae’s eager to hear any news, but finds it odd that his memory of her mother was when she was pregnant with her, since Sung-joon doesn’t look any older than she does.
  • Deuk-chun suddenly appears to nonchalantly escort them back inside. He’s noticed a car parked down the street and has recognized the masked man inside as the same one who dropped the money at the dogfighting ring. But it’s extra suspicious because the car hadn’t been following them before, so how did the masked man find them?
  • That masked man is Director Baek, and he continues to stake out Mi-rae’s apartment. Sunbae is surprised to see Sung-joon again, since he thought they’d already left. Sung-joon tells Mi-rae to keep an eye on the car outside, warning her to call the cops if anything seems suspicious. He then uses the emergency stairwell to exit the building.
  • Meanwhile, Director Baek gets an update with profile information about Mi-rae. When he sees that she’s a reporter, he sighs and hopes that this won’t complicate things. As if they’re not already complicated enough.

duel0600495a.jpg&key=5617cb9a28904aadcf9 duel0600425a.jpg&key=48bd033e8e520de3541

  • Deuk-chan is doing his own stakeout by the front gate of the apartment building and keeps a cautious eye on the car as he waits for the masked man to come out.
  • Meanwhile, Sung-joon creeps around from the back. Director Baek studies his GPS tracker as he wonders what’s going on, because the red dot appears to be in the alleyway instead of inside the building.
  • Director Baek grabs a syringe as he gets out of the car. He also puts on gloves, which is never a good sign. Syringe at the ready, he advances towards the entrance of the building. Director Baek nonchalantly starts to follow as a resident enters the building, but Deuk-chun is hiding just behind the door.
  • Deuk-chun advances, his gun pointed at Director Baek. Deuk-chun demands to know who he is, but Director Baek waits until Deuk-chun advances close enough for him to knock the gun out of Deuk-chun’s hand. The two men fight in the middle of the street, and they’re pretty evenly matched.

duel0602960a.jpg&key=dde211730139d136709

  • Director Baek pulls out the syringe to use against Deuk-chun, who blocks him and manages to throw him aside. Director Baek kicks him in the chest and sends him flying to the ground, and then Sung-joon comes running up to grab Deuk-chun’s gun and point it at Director Baek.
  • Sung-joon recognizes him as the man who was there the night Byung-joon died. Director Baek tells him that they’ve actually met before — doesn’t he remember? He then grabs Sung-joon and knocks him down, injecting the syringe into his neck.
  • Deuk-chun staggers to his feet and retrieves his gun, but his attempts to shoot at Director Baek go wide, and soon, he’s out of bullets. As he stops to reload, Director Baek gets in his car and speeds away — right toward Deuk-chun, who’s standing in the middle of the street. Mi-rae sprints and tackles Deuk-chun, saving him from getting run over as Director Baek escapes.

duel0600807a.jpg&key=957ac596774e13ad634

  • She and Sunbae are worried about the unconscious Sung-joon. They don’t know what he’s been injected with, but they agree that he needs to get to a hospital ASAP. Deuk-chun reminds them of the situation they’re in — they can’t exactly waltz into a hospital with the police on their tail.
