Duel: Episode 3

duel0300886.jpg

In Deuk-chun’s desperate attempt to find his daughter, he stumbles across another sinister plot. As he races to stay one step ahead of the police and prosecutors, doubts begin to creep in when the fugitive by his side reveals some surprising skills. There’s also someone new who might hold a key to the puzzle that is Sanyoung Research Group.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

duel0300013.jpg duel0300032.jpg

The episode begins with another flash-forward, this time to an empty warehouse. A man is tied to a chair, and Good Clone rushes in, desperate to find a way to remove the zip tie that’s slowly choking the other man. But Bad Clone appears and says the he can’t help the man — he deserves to die, anyway. Bad Clone tightens the cord strangling the man as Good Clone throws himself at them.

Back to the bridge, where fugitive Good Clone and Deuk-chun leap off the bridge to escape the cops. Jo-hye is surprised to hear what he did to break Good Clone out of jail, and wonders if they’re dead after that jump. She also asks about that other fugitive, Man-choon, and declares that they’ll be taking over this case. Dead or alive, they need to find these fugitives. She also requests that her team make sure everyone keeps quiet about Deuk-chun’s involvement.

duel0300248.jpg duel0300194.jpg

It’s raining as Deuk-chun and Good Clone clamber onto the river bank. Good Clone’s got a nasty wound on his arm, but at least they’re alive. They need to keep moving, though, before someone finds them. Deuk-chun is relieved to find Soo-yeon’s hairpin still in his pocket, and a flashback reveals he originally stole it from the police evidence room. Across the river, Golf Bag Guy watches them through a night-vision telescope and reports back to Bad Clone, letting him know that they’re still alive. Bad Clone tells him to keep an eye on them, and they’ll rearrange their plans to match Deuk-chun and the other clone’s movements. He smiles as he repeats that it will be fun.

Deuk-chun’s two loyal detectives, Hyung-shik and Soo-ho, are also helping out with the search, and they gather the evidence that Good Clone’s shirt is ripped and that he must have an injury. The police are under orders to turn over all evidence to Jo-hye, but Hyung-shik insists on taking it instead.

He reveals to Soo-ho that he’s been in contact with Deuk-chun, who had asked him for his help. He just didn’t know it was going to be like this, he says, and he still isn’t sure what Deuk-chun is up to. Both detectives are frustrated, but also worried about their boss. At least Hyung-shik is convinced that Deuk-chun won’t die before he finds Soo-yeon.

Jo-hye visits the Chief Prosecutor’s office, revealing that Man-choon was one of the prisoners who escaped — you know the one she sent to jail for “kidnapping†the five-year-old. But instead of putting the fugitives on the “wanted†list, she wants to keep the case private since one of them is Soo-yeon’s kidnapper and it will give them a chance to find the girl. The Chief Prosecutor affably agrees, pointing out that he trusts her because she’s so good at her job.

Good Clone and Deuk-chun arrive at a farm, and Good Clone tries washing his wound as Deuk-chun finds him a set of clothes that isn’t the very noticeable prison jumpsuit. They duck out of site when a patrol car investigates the farm, however the cop doesn’t find anything particularly suspicious, thanks to the water washing away Good Clone’s trail of blood. Even so, Deuk-chun and Good Clone need to get back on the road, and quickly.

As Deuk-chun jimmies open the lock of a nearby car, Good Clone marvels that a detective could have such skills. Deuk-chun points out that most of the people he meets are criminals. He tries to hot-wire the car, but it isn’t working.

duel0300618.jpg duel0300631.jpg

A cop car is coming dangerously close, so Good Clone grabs the wires out of his hands and expertly starts the car, allowing them to casually drive away without notice.

Now it’s Deuk-chun’s turn to be impressed, but Good Clone admits he has no idea how he knew how to do that. He assumes he must have hung around with a bad crowd before he lost his memories. They’re headed to Busan to find the homeless guy who bought Good Clone the bus ticket to Seoul, since it’s the only lead to figuring out who Good Clone is or what he’s involved in.

duel0300697.jpg

Investigative reporter RYU MI-RAE (Seo Eun-soo) is trying to figure out what is really going on with the child who was scheduled to receive the stem cell treatment. She’s already discovered that the girl isn’t at Sanyoung hospital, where the press releases said she should be.

Mi-rae is convinced something has gone wrong — Sanyoung has been carefully manipulating their media play since the beginning when they were first experimenting with the stem cell treatment, now all of a sudden they’ve surprisingly become quiet and hostile to further questioning. Her reporter sunbae is worried about her because she’s been so wrapped up in this case at the exclusion of everything else, but she reveals that this is more personal than simply writing a good story. This case could have something to do with her mother.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Duel" Episode 4

photo857709.jpg&key=3540eb79c9831b9bc98f

"Duel" has a knack for providing answers only to raise more questions. Episode four is all about tracking down Choi Joo-sik, the subject of the 1993 experiments before Seong-hoon can get to him. Deuk-cheon's friends and the prosecution team keep dancing around each other as our two heroes get ready to infiltrate enemy lines. Mi-rae joins the game as shocking truths come to light.

The deeper we go into the clone business the more confusing it gets. On one hand, I was right about Jeon Byeong-joon (Jo Jae-ryong) looking a lot younger than his current styling in Seong-joon's (Yang Se-jong) flashbacks. It seems that a young man in 1993, when Choi Joo-sik (Jo Jae-wan) was experimented on was killed by him and Jeon. Was the young man a scientist killed as revenge for his twisted experiments?

More importantly, is he really dead? The scars on Seong-hoon's body would have us believe that he is the original, which would make him quite old. The famous list is clearly crucial for him and his higher ups, so it seems that cloning is not the end game. It may only be a flawed method by which Seong-hoon keeps his body young, if he is the original scientist. Seong-joon is therefore a tool for revenge and survival, rather than a precious scientific achievement.

Of course, there is a far more likely possibility. That Seong-hoon is also a clone to the dead original who was created by his masters as an access point to the former's memories. He may simply be using surgery as well as other methods to prolong his life until the list can provide the key to his survival. The flawed genetics mean that Seong-joon is in danger as well, creating a dramatic dilemma. In order for the kind hero to survive, the villain has to succeed.

photo857706.jpg&key=63685baadc8bfe0f926aphoto857705.jpg&key=9c4721d5d12c6b67a685

I already mentioned the possibility that Deuk-cheon's (Jeong Jae-yeong) wife was her sister and that Jo-hye might hate Deuk-cheon for her fate, so perhaps both apply. Soo-yeon is someone she cares about and Deuk-cheon is someone she is bitter for enough to not make his survival a priority. I hope the series will juggle the two sides of this story well, since they hold equal places in the premise.

  • Duel: Episode 4

duel0401314.jpg

  • Ahhhhh, what a good episode, full of minor secrets and discoveries that are undoubtedly paving the way to something much more insidious. Thanks to some tantalizing hints, it’s a race to find a man who might hold a clue to what happened twenty-four years ago — and possibly, what led to the clones being who they are today.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

duel0400077.jpg duel0400060.jpg

Flash-forward intro: As a dogfight rages to the cheers of the gamblers surrounding the cage, Good Clone is dragged into the office of a man who says that he knows him. The man is surprised Good Clone is alive, because he was sure he killed him. As the man lifts Good Clone by the collar, he demands to know how he’s still alive and how he hasn’t aged. Mi-rae, peering through a crack in the door, watches them and pulls a piece of paper out of her pocket, her eyes widening in shock.

Back to the empty building, where Deuk-chun, bound to a pillar, slowly regains his consciousness as Bad Clone beats up Good Clone. Deuk-chun demands to know where his daughter is as he threatens to kill Bad Clone. But Bad Clone just smiles, since he knows Deuk-chun can’t kill him, because he needs him to find his daughter. With that, he leaves.

duel0400198.jpg

Jo-hye, along with her team and hordes of police, pull up to the abandoned building, but Deuk-chun and Good Clone seem to have made their escape. She finds Byung-joon’s body and grumbles to herself that “he†is just making things unnecessarily harder. They’ve also left behind Ddal-soo’s daughter, who should be fine once the sleeping pills wear off, but Jo-hye recognizes the jacket wrapped around the girl: it’s Deuk-chun’s. It’s proof that he was there and involved in this case.

Both Deuk-chun and Good Clone seem pretty dazed as they drive along, and Deuk-chun pulls over to demand exactly who — or what — Good Clone is, and how he’s related to Bad Clone. But Good Clone is just as baffled as Deuk-chun, with no clue as to why there’s someone who is identical to him who isn’t his twin. He shouts that it’s making him feel crazy too.

duel0400419.jpg duel0400413.jpg

Deuk-chun confesses that he thought his daughter was kidnapped because someone knew about the bribe money that he and Jo-hye had accepted years ago and wanted to punish him. But now he’s wondering if the kidnapping actually has to do with Good Clone, even if he’s not sure how or why. He just knows that Good Clone is at the center of it, and therefore needs to understand who Good Clone is and how he’s related to Bad Clone.

Good Clone is desperate to figure out the same information, and they agree to find Choi Joo-shik while Good Clone works on getting back his memories. They’re officially partners now.

duel0400487.jpg

Jo-hye’s team have figured out that the fingerprint found on Byung-joon is the same as the prints of Soo-yeon’s kidnapper, but no one involved with the organ harvesting has ever seen Soo-yeon, so there doesn’t seem to be a connection to the cases other than that. However, when Jo-hye returns to her office, she finds a letter from someone named “Lee Sung-joon†with a note labeled “Murder Forecast,†asking who will be the next victim after Byung-joon.

She wonders if the killer sent this to her as a warning so that she can stop the murder, or if the killer sent this to show off that someone else will be killed no matter what. But in order to prevent the murder, they know that they first need to know who’s going to be killed. She requests detectives Hyung-shik and Soo-ho to be transferred to her department so that she can keep an eye on them and their investigation.

duel0400544.jpg duel0400538.jpg

Mi-rae and her sunbae continue to look into the documents left behind from her mother, and they’ve discovered that it has to do with stem cell research from a study in 1993, when stem cell research was still new. But what’s surprising is that the documents show studies regarding induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell research, which couldn’t have existed at that time. But if this research is true, then the current ground-breaking stem cell treatment from Sanyoung could have been created twenty-four years ago.

Giving us a crash course on the importance of stem cells, Mi-rae points out that if Sanyoung had discovered iPS cells back then, then they could have extended the life of cloned animals. Since clones — such as the famous Dolly the sheep — come from adult cells that have already entered the aging stage, their life expectancy is considerably shortened compared to non-cloned counterparts. But the research from her mother seems to indicate that they were looking for a solution to work around such handicaps.

Mi-rae is also baffled to realize that her mother was a nurse, something she never knew, especially when her mother had been so against her becoming a doctor. Ohhh, so she’s a doctor, too? She must be a medical journalist, then.

duel0400798.jpg duel0400779.jpg

At the prosecutor’s office, Hyung-shik and Soo-ho nervously wait for Jo-hye like two kids who were sent to the principal’s office, and Hyung-shik remembers to silence his phone just before Jo-hye walks in. Now that they’ve been assigned to work together, she gets right to the point: She believes this “Lee Sung-joon†person was responsible for kidnapping Soo-yeon and for killing Byung-joon.

Jo-hye warns them that if Sung-joon — aka Good Clone — is found to have killed someone else, then Deuk-chun will be considered an accessory to murder. And they don’t want that, now, do they? So, she adds, it’s in all their best interests to figure out who the next victim will be.

Deuk-chun is getting frustrated that Hyung-shik isn’t answering his calls, but immediately grows concerned when he sees Good Clone struggling to breathe. He hurries to the pharmacy to get medication for him.

duel0400892.jpg duel0400890.jpg

Meanwhile, Bad Clone stops by the medical room where Soo-yeon is hidden, noting that she appears to be in distress as she dreams. She reaches out for her father, but it’s Bad Clone’s hand she grabs. Waking up, she pleads with Bad Clone to tell her when her father will be there, since she no longer sees him even in her dreams. He just quietly tells her to wait a little while longer before drugging her once more, causing her to fall back asleep.

But as he walks back into his living quarters, he clutches at his chest, momentarily in pain. (Perhaps the same pain Good Clone is enduring?) Good Clone also has a flashback to a dogfight, and even though he’s not sure what it means, he’s convinced that Joo-shik has something to do with dogfighting.
