Oof, what a heartrending reminder that as sweet and lovable as Nam Shin-III is, he’s not human. The fire did a good job of allowing us to see a good side to So-bong’s personality — the side that was willing to delay her own escape to help save others. Of course, it put her in mortal danger so that our hero could, well, be the hero. But I feel like Nam Shin-III’s “Disaster Mode†was something we needed to see as well, especially the way everything else shuts down and he becomes focused on rescue to the point that he doesn’t even recognize people. Probably later, he’ll go into Disaster Mode again, but that time he’ll override his programming for some emotional reason, showing how he’s evolving.

I still love this drama as much as I did after the first episode, and even though it has some pretty obvious flaws, I’m willing to overlook them since the emotional draw is so darn good. The drama seems to be sacrificing some logic and continuity (well, aside from the main character being a robot capable of human emotion) in order to focus on issues like the human condition, and as long as I’m prepared for those sorts of trade-offs early on, I’m generally willing to go along with them and just enjoy the ride. So we’ll just ignore things like the fact that a truck going that fast would do more than put Shin in a coma… it would quite literally flatten a man, and even if he did survive, he certainly wouldn’t be stable enough to be moved to someone’s home the next day. He definitely would not still have his pretty face intact.

I didn’t really comment on So-bong as a character before, because I wanted to get a more comprehensive sense of her personality besides her being an opportunistic liar. She’s portrayed as cute and somehow likable despite her willingness to sell out a celebrity for money, but I appreciate that the show doesn’t let her immoral behavior slide just because she’s adorable. She’s definitely shown to have deserved what she got, and even her Dad, who previously doted on her and defended her, now openly shows how disappointed he is in her and even calls her trash. But So-bong is scrappy and tough, and she’s not afraid of confrontation, which is an admirable quality. Still, I like that So-bong is flawed and irrational and angry, because it gives her character a direction to grow in, and I’m looking forward to Nam Shin-III teaching So-bong to be more, well, human.

Human0304-00518.jpg

One thing I wasn’t expecting from this show was bromance, but I really love the energy between Young-hoon and Nam Shin-III. Young-hoon knows Shin very well, but he definitely doesn’t like him, and you can already tell that he’s starting to like Nam Shin-III. That little moment when Young-hoon smiled, and Nam Shin-III smiled back at him, was absolutely perfect. It wasn’t too much for this stage of their friendship, and it showed that there’s respect growing between them, and the potential for a wonderful friendship. Nam Shin-III has never had a male friend of roughly his own age, and I think I’m going to like seeing him making a friend as much as I’m going to enjoy watching him discovering romance.

I’m still just as impressed with Seo Kang-joon’s acting here, which is such a pleasant surprise. I thought he did a great job in the first episode distinguishing Shin from Nam Shin-III through his expressions and body language, but he stepped up his game in this episode by perfectly portraying Nam Shin-III-as-Shin. He had Shin’s smirk and swagger down to a tee, but whenever he dropped the facade to just be Nam Shin-III, it was a subtle but startling transformation. And more than once in this hour I found myself thinking, “Wow, Nam Shin-III does such a good impression of Shin!†before remembering that it’s the same actor, and not really someone else pretending to be Shin.

I expect that part of Nam Shin-III’s story will involve his discovery that he’s not Ro-ra’s son the same way Shin is, and that he will struggle with the knowledge that she doesn’t love him the way she loves the son she gave birth to. But Ro-ra created Nam Shin-III and lived with him for twenty years, more than twice as long as she knew and lived with Shin, and she must have developed a mother’s love for him, as well. I hope the show addresses the fact that Nam Shin-III is also Ro-ra’s son — he’s every bit her creation, in some ways even more so than Shin, and loving Shin doesn’t mean that she doesn’t also love Nam Shin-III as a son.

Are You Human Too: Episodes 5-6

Human0506-00439.jpg

  • Will the real Shin please stand up? Nam Shin-III has only just begun impersonating his human “brother,†but he hasn’t even been there a full day before rogue programming and suspicious enemies start making things difficult. The switch isn’t working out like anyone planned due to unforeseen circumstances, despite Nam Shin-III doing a crack-up job impersonating Shin. He’s even enjoying himself and making unconventional friends, although even androids can get a little bit homesick.

COMMENTS

UGH, So-bong is driving me crazy – she’s so colossally stupid, at least at this early point in the story. I have no idea why she thinks that spying on “Shin†again is a good idea, other than that she didn’t learn her lesson the first time. It’s going to blow up in her face, again, only this time it will be worse because she’s going to get Nam Shin-III outed as an android, the real Shin taken from his mother again when he can’t even advocate for himself, and probably put herself, her father, Young-hoon, Ro-ra, and who knows who else in mortal danger. The worst part is that, as far as she knows, it was the real Shin who saved her life, but she didn’t even hesitate for an instant when she got the chance to betray him for money a second time.

And how could she not not sense that going into any sort of scheme with Jong-gil is a bad idea? I was really proud of So-bong in this episode for admitting her fault in the hidden camera plot, and for offering to make up for it — until we saw that she’s actually working with Jong-gil to spy on Nam Shin-III. Will the girl never learn?! To be a little fair, she’s only seen him with Ye-na, and he’s a total marshmallow around his daughter, so I can see how it might be easy for him to convince So-bong that he’s only worried about Shin’s strange behavior.

But he wasn’t even trying to hide the goatee-stroking, villainous side of his personality when he suggested this plan to her, which brings me right back to “stupid.†I hope So-bong wises up soon before she gets several good people, and one very squishy android, killed.

Human0506-00284.jpg

On the other hand, I wasn’t expecting to like Young-hoon so much so soon, but I really do. He’s a great character because he seems so cold and impersonal on the outside, but there are moments when you can see that he’s extremely shaken, saddened, and scared by Shin’s accident and worried by Nam Shin-III’s presence. He’s been with Shin for years, and despite Shin’s jerky demeanor, it’s obvious that Young-hoon cares for him very much. That moment when he saw Nam Shin-III in Shin’s room and thought it was Shin was just heartbreaking. I do think that Young-hoon genuinely likes Nam Shin-III, and to his credit he treats Nam Shin-III like a person and not like a thing, but you can almost see him holding back from coming to care for him when he knows Nam Shin-III will go away once Shin wakes up from his coma.

I’m really concerned about Nam Shin-III and what his posing as Shin is going to do to him emotionally. The show still hasn’t told us for sure, but he pretty obviously does experience emotions, at least to the fullest extent that a man-made creation can. He displays the behavior of a being that feels emotions even when he’s alone and there’s nobody to put on a show for. So unless we’re told different, I’m just going to assume that he’s actually feeling the feelings he displays, and form my opinions on the show and his character accordingly. But I’m also worried about the fact that Nam Shin-III has emotions, because he’s just so innocent and unaware of how people can be to each other. He’s going to be hurt when Shin gets all the credit for his own good deeds, like we saw when he saved the people from the burning building but Shin was given all the credit, and he protested that he’s the hero. That’s not a huge problem, but I’m scared that it’s going to get worse the longer he pretends to be Shin, and especially if So-bong falls for him thinking he’s Shin. I can see Nam Shin-III developing feelings for her, and getting his heart broken to realize that she doesn’t even know who he really is.

I hadn’t really felt much chemistry between our leads yet, mostly because they haven’t had much screen time together. I was concerned that Nam Shin-III and So-bong have such different energies to them that they wouldn’t have much chemistry, so I’m happy that they finally got to spend more time together and I learned I was wrong to worry. So-bong seems to bring out this petty, childish side to Nam Shin-III that is both adorable and hilarious, and I was all in from the moment he mouthed “LI-AR†at her in the car. Nam Shin-III is fully committed to playing Shin to perfection, but you can’t convince me that he’s not having fun when he does things like that, now that he has permission not to be so nice all the time. I love that he’s even making friends with beings like himself… I mean, how could I notfall for an android whose best friend is a vacuum cleaner?

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

  • Are You Human Too: I don’t mind the corporate shenanigans because they’re an essential driver of the conflict and I’d rather have stakes than not, but I do prefer when they’re kept to a minimum and in the background. Mostly I’m here for sweet Robot Shin, who is so childlike and good-natured and human-esque that I’m both excited and a little nervous about how the drama will resolve his story. He seems aware and conscious and real in significant ways, but how will he survive in this world? How will he be allowed to exist when Human Shin also exists? I want this drama to figure out the answer satisfactorily, but it’ll hurt if it doesn’t.

  • Are You Human Too: Nam Shin-III is the cutest and I will cry as hard as Young-hoon (y’all know he’ll be devastated) if that kill switch is activated. I don’t even know what’s the big deal with having two Shins. Just change his face. Did Mom never hear of the wonders of plastic surgery?

Are You Human Too: Episodes 9-10

Human0910-00313.jpg

Nam Shin-III’s secret only makes life harder for So-bong, who desperately wishes she could just forget what she knows and go back to her life. She’s torn between shock and the fact that everywhere she goes, he’s there, smiling that endearing Cinnamon Roll Smile at her. What can she do when she just wants to wallow in her bad mood, but she can’t shake the fluffy android puppy that seems determined to win her over? Oh well, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

EPISODE 9 RECAP

Human0910-00020.jpg

So-bong thinks about how Shin went from a guy who hit her in public, to someone who hugged her when she cried and saved her life, and how he said that he doesn’t have a heart or emotions. She thought it was strange, but she never expected to learn that he wasn’t even human.

After he stopped the driverless M-car’s wild behavior, So-bong had been frantic with worry, until she saw the damage to Nam Shin-III. His android insides had shown through where his human-like skin had been torn away, and she’d backed away, falling and screaming at him not to come closer. Ro-ra drives up to them, and So-bong tries to run off, but Ro-ra sends Nam Shin-III to catch her. He tosses her over his shoulder with a cheerful grin and takes her to Ro-ra’s car, and Ro-ra drives away.

Human0910-00056.jpg Human0910-00059.jpg

The paparazzi are busy shouting questions at Chairman Nam, asking if the M-car project will be scrapped. He refuses to answer and leaves in his limo, leaving Jong-gil, who masterminded the M-car’s hacking, grinning like the Cheshire cat.

Nam Shin-III holds So-bong’s wrists so she can’t jump out of the car while he politely introduces himself. She screams that she doesn’t care, but Ro-ra says she’ll explain soon, instructing Nam Shin-III not to let So-bong go. So-bong spots Nam Shin-III’s metal insides again and mutters that it’s disgusting. When they arrive at Ro-ra’s hideout, So-bong cries that Nam Shin-III is hurting her and he lets go. She tries to run again, only to be cut off by Young-hoon. Inside, Ro-ra fixes the damage to Nam Shin-III while he apologizes for getting caught by So-bong.

COMMENTS

Well, I was not expecting that! I certainly didn’t expect a kiss so soon, and I didn’t expect Nam Shin-III to make a leap from “avoid this marriage†to “I’ll pretend to date So-bong!†It’s actually not a bad plan, for one that Nam Shin-III had to come up with on the fly, but it’s hilarious that he took the drama route and made a spectacle out of it instead of just claiming to be dating her. Now they’ll have to keep up the charade, which should be a lot of fun to watch between her flailing in frustration and him just grinning at his brilliant plan.

At first I was annoyed by So-bong’s… well, her entire personality, but now I find her refreshingly realistic, and a perfect foil to Nam Shin-III’s over-the-top sweetness. She’s still annoying, but she’s also earnest and headstrong, determined to do what she feels she has to in order to survive. I’m so used to seeing dramas where the starry-eyed ingenue meets a cranky misanthrope and teaches him to be a nicer person, but here, the misanthrope is in a coma, and we’re left with a starry-eyed android and a girl who’s just trying to make her own justice in a harsh world.

I like that neither our hero or heroine are typical characters — one is a robot who is just learning about the big world, and the other is a girl who could easily have been a Candy if not for her tendency to see everything as a personal insult.

Human0910-00393.jpg

I also found So-bong’s initial response to the fact that Nam Shin-III is an android to be realistic and understandable. She was horrified, even repulsed, at the fact that he appears so human yet isn’t even alive. What surprised me if Nam Shin-III’s reaction — I expected him to be upset, or to feel rejected by So-bong’s inability to see him as anything but a “thing.†But he’s actually pretty pragmatic about the fact that he’s not human, and he seems to understand that when people see him as an object, it’s not a personal rejection but just a natural emotional response. Still, it was cute when he knew he was making So-bong uncomfortable and tried to find common ground with her, calling her a cyborg since she’s got a steel rod in her leg.

I was particularly impressed with Nam Shin-III’s insight when he decided that So-bong was the right person to help him. Instead of avoiding her when she was shocked and scared of him, he realized that her reaction made her uniquely qualified to be the one to show him how to be more human. Since she’s felt the shock and disgust of discovering that he’s an android, she knows better than anyone how to advise Nam Shin-III on how to seem more human and avoid being caught. It shows that Nam Shin-III is capable of complex thought, and of finding a logical solution to an emotional problem. At least it worked with So-bong, and along with the fact that he’s helped her twice, convinced her to stay and help him pass as human. I love that she immediately started being fascinated by him instead of repulsed, and I can’t wait for Nam Shin-III’s human lessons — with a cranky teacher like So-bong, it’s going to be hilarious. And after that kiss, probably more than a little bit sexy.
