How do you deal with group assignments?

So we have this one group assignment for uni where we have to make a video on some body system. At first it was going fine and everyone seemed to participate in it but now I can't help but feel as though they're all relying on me to sort of do the entire thing.

In terms of research, we split up the topics to make notes ourselves but even after I prompted several times, no one seemed to have anything to show for it. The one girl who responded kinda just showed me a few photos and I ended up having to write her notes myself based off of them. And the rest hadn't even responded and seem to be avoiding the question...

There's less than a week left and despite me asking so many times none of them are cooperating and I'm honestly getting so frustrated. I feel like I'm being forced to research and make the video myself and I really don't have the time - I've got more exams than them and I just feel like screaming.

I honestly don't know what to do and idk, I just really hate group projects atm

I always do most of the work tbh, it seems no one wants to be the "leader" so I'm usually in charge of it and I assign everyone their parts and check up on them, I'm not suffering a bad grade just because they procrastinate... though I procrastinate too but seeing it before me makes me not want to

I would just let the teacher or professor know the situation so things can be solved.

As for one of my friend's style is she does all the work and if things needs to be presented in class then she gives parts to her group member so they can memories it and present those parts to make it look like everyone in the group[ did their parts fully.

I find that the best way to get a group to do things is to set up physical meetings, even if only a few members can show up. That way it solidifies the fact that it's a group project and not a bunch of individual projects. Also, as rude as it may sound, it's a good way in adding a force that makes people do things. Since you only have a couple days left, try and get an emergency meeting together, if not an physical meeting, maybe one thorough skype and stuff. It's hard to do group projects in university but you'll be doing so many of them unfortunately.

I hate group projects too :donthinkso:

just report them to your lecturer for not doing their part

I personally hate it and it's been my dilemna since first year college. I dislike dependent/lazy group members especially the ones who contribute very less to nothing and just waiting for the same grades that the teachers will give. IDK but I often carry the biggest tasks/workload.

While I could let the lecturer know, I honestly don't think it will be all that effective considering how last minute it would be (we only have a week left after all). I already let the rest know that they better get their shit together because I frankly don't have the time to deal with them.

As of now, I think I'm just gonna complete the thing myself and just be completely honest when it comes to the peer evaluations. And I better be more careful when choosing my partners omg -.-

If I have a bad group I usually end up carrying the weight but then absolutely roasting my members once peer evaluations come around.

I don't know how far into your college career you are, but in my experience I've found that the higher in class level you get the better your group members get. I'm sure that's not everyone's case, but if you're in your first two years group projects may get better!

considering how rough college is and how hard i worked (even in situations where i didnt get the grade i wanted) id be damned carrying the load of my fellow members.

message your professor the issues. I would message the professor in a day or two so that they can take that into consideration when they factor grades in. Also maybe your professor can help out with some tips on how to save your grade. I dont think its fair to be the only one doing the work and then everyone getting the same grade.

that's happened to me before and it's so bothersome. part of me just wanted to do my own share but i also didn't want to get a lousy grade. i'd suggest to let your prof know just in case it may affect how he/she grades. but for now, just do what you can i guess since it's a week away. i wish you luck

LOL I literally just responded to your nursing thread but couldn't help wanting to respond to this one too.

I had the same exact problem when I was about to graduate. One of the girls wouldn't cooperate with our final group paper.

I think there's really no solution :( In your case it sounds worse bc the rest of my groupmates were hard-working and all got their work in on time.

I think the important thing is when it gets to this point, definitely set guidelines. Be the leader and tell them all the exact date/time certain steps should be handed in and emphasize how important this project is.

It sounds mean lol but I would hint to the girl that you're not afraid to report her to the professor if she continues slacking! It's unfair of you to do all the work. Good luck!!!

  • 2 months later...

usually if there's a group project then we make sure to meet up in person at least once, usually at the very beginning so we can decide in that moment what our plan for our project is and then splitting it up into parts. then usually we just work on it and then add more work to a shared google doc. if someone isn't pulling their weight we usually just tell the professor what's up and they're usually pretty understanding about it. (since we tend to be graded individually anyways it won't affect us if one member of our group bombs it)

I hate group works but what new, I hate humans and I always ends up doing a large portion because someone suddenly gets sick a few days before the due date, I try to be friendly and sometimes be a little bit of a bitch because some people don't deserve my precious smile but yea, they are only relevant for the time being so why not just do the work and get it over with.

I gave up being afraid to come across as 'bossy' in group projects years ago. I like to get work done and being passive, in a group with at least one lazy person means we're all going down in the ship and getting a bad grade. So I usually take charge. Sometimes I would like to sit back and do a small portion, but I've rarely been in a group that's not full of freeloaders and the risk of failing is way too large lol
