The women’s volleyball team of Serbia celebrated winning a spot in the 2018 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Japan by doing the “slant-eye†pose.After defeating Poland’s volleyball team in a qualifier match over the weekend, they decided to pose for the photo with many of the players pulling their eyes back. It appears that the players are doing the slant-eye gesture in excitement about traveling to Japan for the 2018 world championship, but it’s just plain racist and rude. The picture was originally posted on the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) website before it was later taken down, according to Deadspin. But this is the Internet and nothing is ever truly deleted. And this isn’t the first time a professional sports team has pulled the “slant-eye†pose — the Spanish basketball team also took some heat in 2008 over their group photo. Earlier this month, Argentinean footballer Ezequiel Lavezzi, who plays for the Chinese club Hebei China Fortune, was pictured with “slanted eyes†and received backlash on social media for the racist gesture.

I don't understand how people (especially public figures) still do this.

Is this just ignorance not knowing that this is offensive?

It's just their culture

Ignorance, they are still unaware it's offensive

some countries in Europe aren't culturally sensitive, I've also seen similar things on my local tv stations how ppl imitate chinese language thinking it's funny, they also use tons of stereotypes as truths.

i dont know, making your eyes slanted and overly so seems like something that you know is offensive. nothing about mimicking the eyes of another ethnicity and exaggerating their features seems like itd be okay. its like japanese people going to america and posing with their hands around their stomach as if to mimic americans being fat (im from american btw thats why used that example). not all americans are fat and not all japanese people have slanted and small eyes fyeahplz.png

Since Japaneses always portray Chinese as slant eyed characters, I don't think they should feel offensive.

Is it racist that Japanese volleyballers refused to shake hand with Thai rival after her team lost or did not clap when member of the Thai winning team won Best ... award?

i hope they lose hard

Why a team of better skill and sportsmanship should lose?

By the way, a player in the photo played in Japanese V-Leauge.

so by your logic if a group of people does something offensive everyone of the same ethnicity should have to accept being mocked by others? two wrongs doesnt make a right rolleyes.gif

So, by your logic, if you find it's offensive, everyone else should too? laugh.png
