  • Reunited Worlds: Episodes 17-18

    Reunited17-18-00452.jpg

Hae-sung has so much to do, and so little time to do it. Yet he still manages to make time for the important things like making new friends and showing the girl he likes how much he cares, as well as just taking the time to be with his family. He’ll be forced to step up his game if he wants to accomplish everything in the time he has left — but if there’s one thing Hae-sung does know, it’s that he has nothing left to lose.

EPISODE 17 RECAP

Hae-sung almost runs into CEO Cha in the restaurant, but he drops his boxes and has to stop to pick them up. At the same time, Min-joon stops his father at the door and orders him to leave his restaurant, and although CEO Cha grumbles that Min-joon will regret this one day, he agrees to go.

The waiters report that the customers love the new dish that Hae-sung invented, and he beams happily at Jung-won. But she’s still upset after overhearing the rumor that she was responsible for his death, and she doesn’t return his smile.

She’s so distracted that she cuts her finger, which earns her a tongue-lashing from the mean sous chef. Even Min-joon tells her to get herself together, so she slinks away to bandage the cut, embarrassed. When she comes back, Hae-sung asks if she’s okay, but she just gives him a curt nod.

Jung-won skips the welcome party for Hae-sung after work to meet with Jin-ju instead. The kitchen employees are all getting drunk and singing in a noraebang, and though they agree that something seems to be missing, they decide to just have fun.

Go, Hae-sung! I love how he confronted CEO Cha with no fear and no hesitation. He doesn’t have time to mess around and needs answers now, so that he can set things right before he has to leave again. At least this time it’s not a fake-out, and hopefully we’ll start to get some answers about what really happened the night Hae-sung died. I don’t expect to learn everything quickly, since CEO Cha hasn’t gotten this far without being sly and cagey, and besides, we still have several more weeks’ worth of shows in which to tell Hae-sung’s story. But I hope we learn at least a little bit about the events of that night, because Hae-sung’s time is growing short.

I think my favorite thing about this episode was Hae-sung and Min-joon’s budding bromance, which is just about the cutest thing ever. You can tell that Min-joon just really wants to be someone’s hyung and takes the role seriously, but Hae-sung is used to being the hyung and keeps ending up taking care of Min-joon instead. It’s so sweet how he chased those thugs away and let Min-joon think that his tiny little fists scared them off, not to mention that time that he took care of Min-joon when he hurt his wrist (Hae-sung buttoning up Min-joon’s pajamas nearly killed me dead).

It makes me sad that their feelings for Jung-won keep coming between them and cutting short any real friendship before it starts, because while Hae-sung has lots of friends and family, Min-joon has nobody. I don’t even think he really likes Jung-won, since when asked why he likes her, all he could say is that she’s pretty. Nothing about her as a person, because he doesn’t really know her as a person. Min-joon is so lonely and so eager to connect with someone, and my heart hurts every time he gets rejected by his father or Jung-won. I can’t help but wish that Hae-sung would introduce Min-joon to his friends. Even if nothing ever happens with Jung-won after Hae-sung leaves, I want Hae-sung to make sure Min-joon is taken care of after he’s gone, the same way he’s taking care of Jung-won and his brothers and sisters.

And then there was the kiss, which was every bit as sweet and innocent as I expected it to be. Normally I would be annoyed by a woman in her thirties reacting so primly to a simple kiss, but in Jung-won’s case, I found her shy response to be very in-character. Besides the fact that this is the boy she thought dead for twelve years, I think that Jung-won was emotionally stunted by Hae-sung’s death and that she hasn’t really progressed much beyond that point in her past. In fact, I’d be surprised if she’s dated at all — she’s never mentioned dating, so I wouldn’t be at all shocked if that was her first kiss as well as Hae-sung’s. And their love was always very pure and innocent, so I thought it was fitting that their first kiss was, too. It wasn’t meant to convey passion, but to confirm that they both feel the same as they did back in school. The kiss was appropriately simple and sweet, and I thought it was perfect.

Hae-sung’s four seasons date was similarly adorable and sweet, but it also made me sad, because he’s obviously anticipating that he won’t be around for long. Mr. Mystery said that the longest anyone had been back was himself, and that was less than a year. Though the idea was sparked by jealousy over Min-joon having pictures of Jung-won in all four seasons, taking those pictures was Hae-sung’s way of giving Jung-won memories of himself even in the seasons after he’s gone. So as cute as it was, it was also bittersweet, and so very like Hae-sung to think of things like that to make Jung-won happy when he’s not there with her anymore.

    Reunited Worlds: Episodes 19-20Reunited19-20-00435.jpg&key=8558cefded6e

There’s a lot of cuteness and sweetness in this episode, and yet there’s also a feeling of urgency that’s beginning to follow Hae-sung as he accelerates his search for the truth. As much as I want him to unearth his killer and discover why he was framed for murder, I also want to tell him to slow down and take his time. The closer Hae-sung gets to clearing his name, the shorter his time back on Earth becomes, and I’m just not ready to watch those who love him face losing him a second time.

EPISODE 19 RECAP

reunitedworlds1920-00004.jpg&key=794933f reunitedworlds1920-00019.jpg&key=873929c

At the Changho Foundation event, Hae-sung follows the pain in his chest to the VIP room, where he finds CEO Cha sitting alone. Knowing that he’s finally found his killer, he reminds CEO Cha who he is, then asks angrily, “Why did you kill me?!â€

CEO Cha puffs up and goes on the offensive, asking why he would kill Hae-sung, but Hae-sung isn’t finished. He states what he’s sure is the truth: that CEO Cha was driving the car that killed him, then he made his chauffeur, Driver Hwang, take the blame.

It must be close to the truth, because CEO Cha freezes, and Hae-sung asks if he killed him in order to frame him for murder. CEO Cha just says that he has no evidence, so Hae-sung roars, “I am the evidence!†CEO Cha dares him to reveal himself and tell the police, but Hae-sung says that now that he knows the identity of his killer, it will be easy to find more proof.

Oh, this is getting good. I can’t wait to see what the boys have up their sleeves — whatever it is seems to scare the pants off CEO Cha, enough that he readily confessed to being the one driving the car when it hit Hae-sung. But apparently CEO Cha knows some things as well, things that are probably going to keep him off the hook for a while longer. I have a feeling that he’s going to say that someone Hae-sung loves killed the bully that night, and I still think that it’s probably Young-joon.

When CEO Cha told Young-joon that “that could happen to anyone,†it seems to me that he’s referring to Young-joon killing the bully accidentally. My theory is that Young-joon was defending himself against another attack, that he accidentally injured the bully then ran, and in his flight, he witnessed CEO Cha hit and kill Hae-sung. CEO Cha probably offered to put Young-joon through medical school, and in exchange both men would remain silent about what they knew. It would also explain why Young-joon cut himself off from his family — deep guilt and shame for letting Hae-sung take the blame for a murder he didn’t commit.

I just love all of the characters in this show so much, and I wish we had more time to spend with each of them. I particularly like Hae-chul, whose journey from a hotheaded thug to a responsible single father is so heartwarming and sweet that I kind of wish it were its own drama. I love stories about daddies and daughters, especially when the daughter, in essence, saves her father’s life simply by existing. Hae-chul is really growing up and maturing since Hae-sung returned, doing his best to be a law-abiding citizen and keep a job so that he can live full-time with Gong-ju. I was so proud of him when he walked right past Gong-ju’s mother and left her in their dust — she abandoned them, and she had no right to try to walk back into their lives with no consequences.

I really adore Tae-hoon and Young-in’s budding romance. They’re just so cute together, and I know Hae-sung would love it if his friend and his sister ended up together. But I also worry that there will be problems when Tae-hoon discovers that his father is the one who killed Hae-sung. They live in a society where a killer’s family members are considered culpable by association, which is why Hae-sung’s family has struggled in the wake of him being labeled a murderer. And Tae-hoon is such a strait-laced, moral guy that I fear that he’s going to take on a huge burden of blame for his father’s involvement and feel that he’s unworthy of Young-in. I’m anticipating that Tae-hoon and Young-in are going to have to fight if they want to stay together, once the truth of Hae-sung’s death comes to light.

The reluctant one-sided bromance between Min-joon and Hae-sung continued in this episodes, and I just think they’re the most adorable things ever. Min-joon loves playing the hyung and showing off to Hae-sung, even though it keeps getting him in trouble, and Hae-sung can’t help but relax and enjoy himself with Min-joon even while he’s grumpy knowing that Min-joon likes his girl. Seeing them eat their way through all that food was hilarious — where did they put it all? Mostly I just like how they fulfill a need in each other, even without realizing it. Min-joon gives Hae-sung the guidance and care he never got while acting as the head of his family at such a young age, and Hae-sung takes the place of the little brother whose name Min-joon was never even allowed to know. They’re just so good for each other.

I feel sort of bad now for suspecting Min-joon of being sinister or hiding something, because it seems clear in retrospect that he really is just that nice of a guy. It was so sweet and generous of him to give the hair ribbon back to the family of the accident victim after taking good care of it for so many years. He has no idea how that hair ribbon connects back to Jung-won and Hae-sung and their shared past — he just returned it out of the goodness of his heart.

But how adorable was it that after all those years, and all that angst, and the roundabout way the hair ribbon was finally returned to Hae-sung… after all that, Jung-won didn’t even like it! Hae-sung’s “You’ve got to be kidding me, lady,†face was hilarious. This show continually throws cute little reversals like that at us, and I love how Hae-sung and Jung-won are so honest with each other, even when they don’t like something. They really are meant for each other.
