  • Reunited Worlds: Episodes 13-14Reunited13-14-00104.jpg

Hae-sung’s return is having a profound effect on Jung-won, both in her relationship with Hae-sung himself and in her relationships with others. Confusing feelings are bubbling to the surface, causing Jung-won to behave in ways that are baffling even to her. She’s changing in a lot of ways, and all for the better, thanks to Hae-sung’s joyful influence.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Reunited13-14-00012.jpg Reunited13-14-00026.jpg

Hae-sung runs to meet Jung-won at the fireworks festival, but he hasn’t found her by the time the fireworks start. He looks around at the happy families and friends enjoying the festival, knowing he’s missed his second and probably last chance to share it with Jung-won.

Meanwhile, Jung-won stays with Min-joon at the hospital after his accident, knowing that he has nobody else to be with him. Min-joon wakes, sore but okay, and he reminds Jung-won that she had plans tonight. She’s reluctant to leave him in his condition, but he strongly urges her to go.

Jung-won runs to the festival, but it’s all over by the time she arrives. Luckily Hae-sung is still there, and when he learns why she’s so late, he’s genuinely glad to hear that Min-joon is all right. He doesn’t do a very good job hiding his disappointment that she missed the fireworks, but when Jung-won says he’s making her feel bad, he perks up and says it’s okay.

Wait, no, I’m not ready! I’m not ready to lose Mr. Mystery, I love him so much, and I’m not ready for Hae-sung to lose the closest thing to a father he’s ever had. I’m definitely not ready to face the reality that Hae-sung’s time is limited. And it scares me how it happens… Mr. Mystery was just here, and then gone. Will Hae-sung just disappear with no warning? Hopefully he’ll be able to feel it coming like Mr. Mystery did, and get a chance to say his goodbyes first. But for now I hope Hae-sung takes Mr. Mystery’s advice to heart and says and does what he wants while he can, because the only thing worse than his leaving again would be if he left with regrets.

Hae-sung and Jung-won really turned up the heat in this episode, and I love that it was Jung-won who felt the effects of the sexual tension the most. It makes perfect narrative sense, since she is the adult in the situation, chronologically. And as a woman myself, I really appreciate it when the heroine is the one staying up late at night thinking about kissing and whatnot, instead of a show trying to pass off a grown woman as being all innocent and virginal. It’s Hae-sung who seems very immature in this arena, at times, the way he sometimes registers the tense moments and sometimes misses them completely even when Jung-won clearly feels them.

Reunited13-14-00338.jpg

But as much as I love Hae-sung and Jung-won together, I also like her with Min-joon, who seems so much like the man Hae-sung would have grown up to be had he been given the chance to grow up. I’ve said before that Min-joon is very like Hae-sung — mature, responsible, kind, and thoughtful — and if this were just a drama about Min-joon courting Jung-won, I’d be the captain of that ship. I love how their friendship is developing, with respect and genuine caring, and how Min-joon never pushes Jung-won or tries to make her do something she doesn’t want to do, either personally or professionally. He supports her in her career and always lets her make her own decisions. I even love that Min-joon has those adorable awkward moments, which keep him from being too perfect. Even though he’s jealous, Hae-sung appears to like and respect Min-joon as well. If it’s true that Hae-sung won’t be able to stay with Jung-won, then I think he’ll be comforted to leave her with a man like Min-joon, who will treat her every bit as well as Hae-sung himself would if he could.

And I’m starting to think that that’s how things will turn out, because everything in the show seems to be foreshadowing it. It’s telling that when Jung-won and Hae-sung were trying to meet for the fireworks, Fate or the universe or whatever stopped them and made sure Jung-won was with Min-joon instead. In fact, there are a lot of hints as to how Hae-sung’s story will end… there are the obvious hints like Mr. Mystery disappearing once his purpose for being back is fulfilled, but there are a lot of smaller clues that make me think that Hae-sung’s time in the living world will be short. Even the necklace that Tae-hoon gave to Young-in felt like a message, with the four smaller circles flanking a single large circle, which made me think of Hae-sung and his brothers and sisters.

And yet, it’s no comfort to know what will probably happen, that Hae-sung will most likely disappear once he’s reunited his family and solved the mysteries from the night he died. His being back only proves how much his family and friends need him, but I guess that a large part of why he returned was to show them that even without him, they can still be happy and together. It’s just so difficult when we have a character who is so essential, and so influential in the lives of everyone who knows him, to imagine how they can ever be okay when he’s gone. His death broke all of them in some way, and his leaving is only going to break their hearts all over again.

#LeeYeonHee Shares How Her Friends Reacted To Her Love Line With #YeoJinGoo

yeo-jin-goo-lee-yeon-hee-XPN.jpg

On August 10, the cast of SBS’s “Into The New World†attended a press conference and answered questions about the drama, which is a fantasy romance drama about a young high school student who is reunited with his family after coming back to life and discovers the truth about his death.

Actress Lee Yeon Hee said, “After the first episode aired, a lot of my female friends sent me messages. Choi Ji Woo told me that [the drama] seemed like a beautiful fairy tale and that it suited me well.â€

She continued, “There are a lot of women close to me who are nuna fans of Yeo Jin Goo. They were all very envious of me and said things like, ‘How could he have a love line with you?’ They even said that they would sent a coffee cart to set for Yeo Jin Goo.â€

Meanwhile, “Into The New World†released behind-the-scene stills teasing the romance between Yeo Jin Goo and Lee Yeon Hee just a few days ago.

  • Reunited Worlds: Episodes 15-16Reunited15-16-00315.jpg

These two are killing me. Their love is so sweet and innocent, and based as much on deep caring and friendship as anything romantic. But Hae-sung has more urgent things to think about, as his chance for catching his killer is literally fading away. Time is growing short, and he needs to decide which is more important — arranging for his loved ones after he’s gone, or living as much as he can while he’s still here.

EPISODE 15 RECAP

Reunited15-16-00010.jpg Reunited15-16-00011.jpg

Jung-won is worried when she finds Hae-sung crying at the bus stop, having just seen Mr. Mystery fade back to where he came from. He doesn’t tell her what’s wrong, so she just hugs him tightly, giving what comfort she can.

Later, Hae-sung asks why Jung-won didn’t ask why he cried. She says that he would have told her if he’d had a good reason, and he doesn’t correct her. She says he can always talk to her if he’s having a hard time, because she’s gained a lot of strength from him and she wants to return the favor.

Reunited15-16-00021.jpg

She lays her head on Hae-sung’s shoulder, then stands to go inside. She says that he’ll feel better tomorrow, and even better as time goes on. In the middle of her sentence, Hae-sung reaches up and grabs her in a hug. Jung-won starts to say something else, but Hae-sung ends the hug and leaves.

While waiting for his bus, Hae-sung finally reads the note that Mr. Mystery left behind:

Hae-sung-ah, there’s no time for you to worry and be sad. Do everything you’ve always wanted to do, so that you don’t regret anything in the future. Take care of yourself, and thank you. By the way, Hae-sung, my name is Ahn Tae-bok.

COMMENTS

I’d been worried that something would bring Jung-won’s guilt over Hae-sung’s death back to the forefront, because she and Hae-sung have never really talked about it, and they really, really need to talk about it. I felt so bad for Jung-won as she was sobbing all alone, but it’s good that this is resurfacing so that she can face her guilt and shame at what happened. Hae-sung exposing his real killer will help, because I suspect that his “accident†wasn’t as much of an accident as we’ve been led to believe. I’m glad, at least, that what triggered Jung-won wasn’t any meanness on the part of her old classmate, and that Seo-won only told Min-joon out of sympathy.

But I’m angry with Min-joon for turning away from Jung-won when she needed a friend the most. She was there for him when she accidentally discovered his deep dark secret, even reaching out to comfort him first, and she didn’t judge him for it. But when Min-joon had the chance to return the favor, he didn’t even bother to learn exactly what happened, he just left her there to grieve alone. I still think he’s more involved than we know, possibly even more than he knows, because he has that ribbon that Hae-sung was going to give to Jung-won on the night he died.

I’m not sure what changed overnight that had Min-joon confessing all over again the next day, but it definitely has something to do with learning that Jung-won isolated herself from her friends after Hae-sung died. He thinks that she doesn’t let herself have feelings for him (or anyone) because she’s still traumatized by her loss in high school, and he’s not wrong, he’s just also not exactly right. But it’s not his fault that he doesn’t know that she’s dealing with her old love coming back from the dead, which has got to be messing with her mind and her emotions in a big way. If this were a different drama and these two were the leading couple, I would love Min-joon’s decision not to give up and let Jung-won retreat from life and lose out on love. But this isn’t Min-joon’s love story, and I worry that he’s just going to get his heart broken.

This show does a very good job of withholding information at the right times, and doling out just enough so that we can form some educated theories without knowing for sure what happened on the night Hae-sung died. Small clues are coming together, leading me to form a rough idea of what happened — it seems as though CEO Cha was probably the one driving the car that killed Hae-sung, simply because he’s the one that Hae-sung’s chest pain responds to. I believe that Young-joon, who was the only sibling not at home that night, probably saw what happened and knows the truth (which is probably his real reason for abandoning his family — guilt over betraying them and Hae-sung). I’m guessing that CEO Cha paid off Min-joon’s uncle, his driver, to take the blame for the accident, and that he paid Young-joon’s way through medical school as a payoff for keeping his mouth shut about what really happened that night.

But there are still so many unanswered questions, and the clues don’t really line up perfectly quite yet. We don’t know why Min-joon’s uncle was willing to plead guilty to manslaughter, because although CEO Cha paid him, his wife says that she knows it wasn’t about the money. We don’t know why Young-joon would have been willing to sell out so easily, because although he was already an angry young man, Hae-sung had never done anything but protect and defend him. And the big question is, who really killed Jung-chul, and how does his death tie in with Hae-sung’s? I think that it was either Tae-hoon, which is why his father was willing to cover everything up, or Young-joon, who had both motive and opportunity.

Regardless of what happened that night, it’s clear that all of the people involved are committed to keeping their secrets. I have a feeling that we haven’t even scratched the surface of the truth, and that we have a long way to go before we know what really happened that night. Hae-sung is going to have a hell of a time proving anything, much less his own innocence in Jung-chul’s murder, when he can’t even explain how he’s back from the dead after twelve years.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

With all the new premieres, ongoing series, and backlogged shows on my plate, I sort of feel like it’s closet-cleaning time and I’m sorting through a big pile of possessions, figuring out what to keep and what to toss, and wondering how I amassed such a collection in such a short period of time. I could’ve sworn I was all caught up a moment ago! It’s like hoarding, the K-drama version. Is the cure… just watching them all? â€“javabeans

  • Reunited Worlds: The more into the romantic line we get, the more nervous I get because I cannot enjoy it freely, given that I half-expect Hae-sung to leave at any moment. I’m pretty sure he won’t go before he’s fixed everything needing fixing, so it’s not like I won’t get any warning, but it makes it hard to get attached!

  • Reunited Worlds: Am I supposed to root for both lovelines at the same time? Because that’s kind of how it feels, except I’m incapable of doing that, which means I end up rooting for neither fully.
