As the harsh reality of Hae-sung’s situation starts to make itself known, he has a hard time maintaining his usual cheerful attitude. He can’t ignore the fact that his loved ones have grown up and moved on without him. But Hae-sung also has a lot to be grateful for and people who are glad he’s returned, even if he still has no idea how it happened or why he’s here.

Oof, poor Hae-sung. He’s still so in love with Jung-won. It makes sense because for him, no time has passed, and he doesn’t seem to care that she’s now older and changed by life — to him, she’s still that young girl who’s the center of his universe. It’s adorable the way he still acts like the oppa with her, even though she’s twelve years older than he is now. But as cute as that is, it makes me ache for all the years that Hae-sung and Jung-won didn’t get to spend together, that they didn’t have the chance to grow up together and experience their young first love growing into a more mature love.

And as much as I would love for Jung-won and Hae-sung to resume their romance now that Hae-sung is back, the truth is that Jung-won has had twelve years for her innocent first love to fade into a bittersweet memory. If Hae-sung had come back twelve years older I might not be so concerned, but he’s still a teenager in both body and mind. Even if Jung-won still loves him, the problems surrounding a woman in her thirties dating an eighteen-year-old are pretty huge. Min-joon is so much more appropriate for Jung-won in just about every way, and when they’re together they seem like they’d make such a great couple… if it weren’t for Hae-sung.

I haven’t mentioned Min-joon much because so far, he’s been pretty peripheral to the main story. But he’s stepping up his game with Jung-won, and it’s sort of worrying me that she’s noticing him as a man. And who wouldn’t — he’s handsome, successful, sweet, understanding, and he’s gone to bat for her more than once, even lying to help her save face in front of her estranged mother. I actually like him a lot, especially the way Jung-won seems to bring out his nervous, shy side, and how he’s not afraid to show his vulnerability to her. He would make a really interesting leading man, if this were a different story.

Anyway, I have a feeling that love isn’t the reason Hae-sung was brought back by whatever orchestrated this situation. His main focus and reason for being were always his family, and we know that at least one of them is in real trouble. Add to that the mystery of Jung-chul’s possible murder, and a lot of inconsistencies surrounding Hae-sung’s death as well, and Hae-sung has a lot on his plate before he can even begin to think about romance. At least I’m not as worried this week that Hae-sung is only here to fulfill a purpose then leave again, because according to the mystery man, there seem to be more people who have come back from the dead and are still around. I just love the looming mystery of it all — why and how Hae-sung returned from the dead, how he’s acquired superhuman powers, and why some people get to come back and not others.

I’m so glad that Hae-sung finally got to reconnect with his old friends. That whole scene had me blubbering as hard as Hae-sung and his buddies, because it was so sweet how awed and grateful they all were to see him again. After being rejected by both of his brothers, Hae-sung really needed to know that there are people who are overjoyed to see him again. His entire identity was wrapped up in being the guiding force of his family, so I can’t imagine how devastated he must feel to wake up one day twelve years later, and find that they blame him for ruining their lives. I didn’t really believe Hae-sung when he said that he wouldn’t have sacrificed for his family if he’d known all this would happen, because that’s not who Hae-sung is — he’s a born caretaker, and it was obvious when he was with his siblings that he adored taking care of them. But it broke my heart when he said that his sacrifices didn’t mean anything. It was so sweet for Jung-won to arrange for his friends to come, so that he could see that he does make a difference in many people’s lives.

What I want Hae-sung to understand is that he’s got it all backwards. It’s not that his living for his family meant nothing — the truth is that it meant somuch, and that he was so essential to them, that they just couldn’t cope with him gone. Without Hae-sung to love and protect them, his family had no rudder. They lost their guiding star, and they didn’t know how to keep it together without him. I hope that Hae-chul will come around quickly and help Hae-sung reconnect with his other siblings so that, even if it’s a few years late, they can become a family again.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

Life has been a bit chaotic lately, and that means I’ve not only fallen behind on shows I’m watching, but also haven’t been able to pick up as many new shows as I’d otherwise like to. But there are some promising new titles in this bunch, and I’m determined to get a taste of everything on my plate… soon… someday… â€“javabeans

javabeans

  • Reunited Worlds: Watching this drama sort of feels like how you might feel after you’ve had your heart broken, recovered from it, and then find yourself potentially falling again. By which I mean: I’m a little scared to fall in love because I have the sinking feeling Yeo Jin-gu might not be alive at the end of it, and I feel like I’m going to be a blubbery mess if this drama resolves the way I think it may. And yet, I can’t help myself from feeling drawn in anyway. I suddenly feel a lot of sympathy for those stupid moths and their flames.

HeadsNo2

  • Reunited Worlds:  Maybe my disconnect with this show is that I just can’t buy the lack of gravitas whenever Hae-sung reunites with someone who thought he was dead, and life just resumes as normal afterward. It feels so out of step with how you’d think that reunion should go—not that there should be wailing and gnashing of teeth, but if you saw someone who died back and in the flesh, would you just be like, “Cool, stay at my house, eat my food, let’s not question how any of this is happening?†I find the fantasy elements interesting, but I feel like the show is deliberately pulling its emotional punches, which seems like a missed opportunity. Then again, maybe that’s not what this show is about, and I’m focusing on the wrong thing.

  • Reunited Worlds: Episodes 9-10ReunitedWorlds09-10-00582.jpg

It must be indescribable to find out that you’ve died and been brought back to the world over a decade later. To not to know how it all works or why you’ve been given a second chance must be a lonely and frightening experience, which Hae-sung brings home for us this hour. But for our resurrected hero, his first priority is always his family, and he plans to reunite his scattered siblings, even if it means putting the mystery of his own death aside.

EPISODE 9 RECAP

ReunitedWorlds09-10-00012.jpg ReunitedWorlds09-10-00011.jpg

Hae-sung and Jung-won start for home after meeting Hae-chul’s daughter, Gong-ju. Suddenly, Hae-sung gasps and clutches his chest in pain. Jung-won is shocked and confused as he collapses to the ground, writhing in agony.

Nearby, Min-joon meets with a man who turns out to be his father, who’s annoyed to have been bothered by something so trivial as his own brother’s funeral. Min-joon is angry that his father didn’t come to the funeral after employing him as his driver for twenty years, but he just gets a lecture about respect. Min-joon tells his father to set an example if he wants respect.

COMMENTS

This episode was difficult to watch, for Hae-sung and for Jung-won, as they both experienced crushing disappointments and didn’t even have each other to lean on. Poor Hae-sung doesn’t ask for much, and after seeing him rage when Young-joon was hurt as a kid, it felt terrible to see Young-joon demanding that he pretend they’re strangers. But I felt particularly bad for Jung-won, who was pushed into a ridiculous test that everyone knew she wasn’t ready for (how can anyone pass a test to become a chef when they’ve been forbidden to even use a frying pan?). She was purposely set up to fail by the kitchen manager, and I blame Min-joon for letting it happen. He knows better than anyone that she only knows how to make one dish, and that she can barely even manage that.

And yet I’m inclined to like Min-joon, because he really seems to be exactly what you see — a sweet, thoughtful, kind man who has honest feelings for Jung-won yet respects the fact that she doesn’t feel the same way. I like how he is around Jung-won in the kitchen, guiding her from the sidelines but never stepping in to solve her problems for her.

Still, there’s definitely something going on with him, although I’m not sure he’s even aware of it. The biggie is his father, who also turns out to be Tae-hoon’s father, making them half-brothers. Then there’s the fact that just being near Min-joon’s father made Hae-sung collapse in excruciating pain, which makes me wonder if Min-joon’s father had something to do with Hae-sung’s death.

Then there’s Min-joon’s past connections to Jung-won, as evidenced by the keepsakes he’s held onto without her knowledge. It seems pretty innocent for him to have one of her cartoons, and his story that she gave it to him accidentally seems plausible. But his possession of the hair ribbon Hae-sung bought for Jung-won points to their connection possibly going further back, maybe even to high school. It’s one more clue that makes me wonder if Min-joon’s father was somehow involved with Hae-sung’s death, because Hae-sung never got a chance to give the ribbon to Jung-won — he was killed before he saw her that night, so the ribbon would have still been on him when he died. So how did it end up in Min-joon’s possession? And why he would keep it in a place of honor, when Hae-sung never even had a chance to give it to Jung-won? Min-joon would have had to somehow know that the ribbon was meant for her.

I can accept that not telling Jung-won that he met her a day earlier than she thinks, when she was drunk, can be chalked up to Min-joon just wanting to be chivalrous. But if they knew each other when they were younger and she just doesn’t remember, and he’s keeping that information from her, then that feels a lot more deliberately dishonest. I don’t think they went to school together because Min-joon told Jung-won that he’s only met his brother once when they were very young, so they couldn’t have attended the same high school. But there’s definitely more to the story that Min-joon isn’t telling, for whatever reason.

Hae-sung is just killing me — he’s such a sweet, bright, loving kid, and he didn’t deserve to die, or to come back only to feel displaced and alone. There are a lot of people who love him and are overjoyed that he’s back, but the sad truth is that they’ve all moved on with their lives. As much as they care about him, a teenage boy can’t be re- integrated into their lives in the same place he occupied when he was alive. In a society so bound by age conventions, Hae-sung is no longer their friend and big brother. Not to mention the added complication of his having been branded a murderer after he died, and the mystery surrounding his death. I’m beginning to worry that there’s no way for Hae-sung to stay in the world of the living and remain with his friends and family, not without sacrificing a lot of what made his life worth living in the first place.

Hae-sung finally starts to ask some questions about his new life after coming back from the dead, particularly in regards to his new powers. But the answers are unexpected, and he realizes that he’s going to have to make some difficult decisions soon. He’s always lived his life for others—but is it time for him to start living for himself?

EPISODE 11 RECAP

ReunitedWorlds11-12-00013.jpg

Min-joon watches as Hae-sung hugs Jung-won, comforting her after her disappointing day. Hae-sung sees Min-joon and lets go, then he leaves so Jung-won can talk to Min-joon alone.

He’s downcast as he walks to the bus stop on his own, but soon Jung-won comes running after him. She’s relieved that he hasn’t gotten on the bus yet, and Hae-sung is just as relieved to see that she came for him.

Min-joon sits outside the restaurant, replaying his conversation with Jung-won. He’d said that she would get another chance to pass her test. He’d mentioned a successful sunbae of his who passed his test much later than most chefs, offering to take her to his restaurant to talk to him. Jung-won had politely refused his offer, preferring to just go home tonight. Min-joon had held in his disappointment until after she’d gone.

COMMENTS

I’m just devastated to learn that Hae-sung’s time back in the world is limited, even though I’ve suspected it from the very beginning. Even without that sure knowledge, so many moments in this episode were about bad timing and missed opportunities, and it’s becoming clear that the show is trying to tell us that Jung-won and Hae-sung are on borrowed time. There’s still something between them, especially on Hae-sung’s end since for him, he’s just picking up exactly where he left off. And I think that after twelve years, Jung-won wasn’t initially feeling anything for Hae-sung other than gratitude for having him back and fondness for her first love, but it’s obvious that those feelings are coming back for her, too.

But she’s also realizing that Min-joon is an attractive man too, and he has a lot going for him that Hae-sung doesn’t have. He’s mature, with life experience and a successful career, and he’s every bit as thoughtful and sweet as Hae-sung. The only thing he doesn’t have that Hae-sung does is a history with her. But he’s trying his hardest to put himself in front of her and get her to notice him without crossing any personal or professional boundaries. And while I’m crushed to learn that Hae-sung won’t be allowed to stay and make a new life with Jung-won, it’s comforting to know that he’ll be leaving her with someone who is a lot like him, and who loves Jung-won, too.

It’s an interesting twist to learn that the pain Hae-sung experiences whenever he’s near the person related to his death will recede over time. It puts a time limit on his ability to use the pain to lead him to answers, so he’s got to step up his game if he wants to learn who is causing his pain and why. I don’t think he’s truly that interested in learning more about his own death because as far as he knows, it was an honest accident. But he suspects that whoever is causing his pain was also involved in Jung-chul’s murder, and discovering who it is and what they know could be the key to clearing Hae-sung’s name and freeing his brothers and sisters from the limitations that being related to a murderer has caused their whole adult lives. Hae-sung’s pain is already lessening every time it happens, so he needs to hurry if he wants to solve this mystery and help his family.

I’m very worried about Soo-ji’s health concerns, for multiple reasons. It sounds like she’s been very sick but has been hiding it, but now she needs an organ transplant and her siblings are the best possible matches. She probably needs a kidney or a liver, since they’re looking for a live donor—maybe she’s diabetic? The actual blood relations among the five brothers and sisters is still unclear, but my guess is that Hae-sung and Hae-chul are related, as are Young-in and Young-joon, just based on their names. They’ve said that Young-joon and Hae-sung aren’t “real†brothers, and I’m guessing that since the doctor suggested Young-in get tested as a possible donor, that Soo-ji could be Young-in and Young-joon’s biological sister. And now that Hae-sung has learned that he’s not back for good and will have to leave again soon, all this talk of organ transplants just makes me that much more concerned.

It really broke my heart when Jung-won told Hae-sung that he can’t be his siblings’ big brother anymore, because they’ve all become adults while he was away. It just slams home that much harder that Hae-sung got left behind in the twelve years that he was dead. It’s understandable that he’s still trying to be their oppa and hyung, but the painful truth is that all of them besides Soo-ji are older than he is now. It’s so sad to think of what a wonderful family patriarch he would have been if he had been able to grow up along with them, but it’s never going to happen now. I think that Hae-sung’s instincts to guide and protect his family are too ingrained for him to ever be able to let go of his need to get involved, but I do hope he can figure out a way to do that that doesn’t cause more problems than it solves.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching???

I have a whole backlog of premieres I still haven’t watched, but then someonehad the bright idea to issue a challenge to rewatch an old drama this month, thereby ensuring dark circles for one and all. What’s on your drama-watching plate this week—something old, something new, something happy, or something that ripped your heart out and left you for dead? â€“girlfriday

  • Reunited Worlds: I’m behind on this and am studiously avoiding spoilers. La la la la la, I can’t hear you!

  • Reunited Worlds: I keep waiting for this show to give my heartstrings a good tug, but it never really goes anywhere past light and pleasant. I enjoy it and find all the characters likable and sweet, but the writing is disappointing me because Hae-sung doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything, even though he has like twelve people’s lives to fix and two murders to solve! Chop chop!
