Reunited Worlds makes one last promo push with summery new posters

reunitedposter_1.jpg

It’s really very late for Reunited Worlds to be releasing promo posters (you premiere tomorrow!), but at least they are pretty to look at and evocative of a light, breezy summer mood.

The four posters all bear the same tagline: “Blinding like the sunlight, this summer’s miracle.†That’s because the “heart-pinching fantasy rom-com†centers around Yeo Jin-gu (Circle) playing a young man who supposedly dies at the age of 19, only to return 12 years later looking exactly as he did while his friends have continued to age into 31-year-old adults. Lee Yeon-hee(Hwajeong) plays his childhood friend and first love, while Ahn Jae-hyun(Cinderella and the Four Knights) will be our hero’s rival as the chef who falls in love with her.

I love this kind of setup, which combines several favorite tropes: a fantasy element that bends/shifts/plays with time, a mystery element regarding how it came to happen, and, of course, the reunited lovers. There’s also a hint of the noona romance, even if it’s not a straight noona setup since they were the same age as children; still, the newfound age gap ought to be an interesting complicator in the setup.

Coming from PD Baek Soo-chan of Girl Who Sees Smells and Beautiful Gong Shim, I expect a bright sense of humor to run throughout the show; I loved the quirky, oddball comedy in both shows, and particularly enjoyed that the latter embraced a feel-good spirit without relying on too much angst or jerky plot twists. Here’s to hoping Reunited Worlds captures that same uplifting tone! I mean, I’m going to watch it regardless, because Yeo Jin-gu (I’m still not over Circle!), but I would like for it to be a pleasant experience in any case.

Choi minsoo is like godfather actor ofc people and especially elder choose to watch them first. And the previous drama had 14-15% rating on couples last week. More surprise with how low KBS Saeguk drama rating is. But Im confident RW will snatch more viewer later. Expecting this will only be another tear jecker melodrama but turn out they put some thrilled and mystery on it and it was fun. The director and writer really love to take a risk and so far its pay off.

yeah i guess so,

otherwise there will be a new tvn drama, (Criminal minds) next week... so it seems to be a great competition lol

  • Reunited Worlds: Episodes 1-2reunited01-00020.jpg

The highly anticipated Reunited Worlds premiered today, and I have to say that this drama immediately sets the bar for itself very high. Nearly everything about it is done with obvious love and care, and I found myself drawn into the story from the very first moment. I hesitate to use the word “perfect,†but it’s the word that kept coming to mind as I found myself instantly swept up in a tale that seems guaranteed to make its audience fall in love.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

On a beautiful sunny day, a teenage boy sits in front of a camera in his school uniform. In voiceover, we hear him say, “I was dead. Twelve years ago, in the summer of my senior year in high school, I died at the age of nineteen.â€

The boy breaks into a wide, happy smile, and the camera snaps his picture.

ReunitedWorlds01-00012.jpg

Twelve years later, a woman visits the boy’s memorial site, where that same joyful smile is displayed under a plaque listing his name, SUNG HAE-SUNG (Yeo Jin-gu), and the date of his death in June of 2005. Awww, he died on his birthday. The woman, JUNG JUNG-WON (Lee Yeon-hee), asks Hae-sung’s memory if he remembers when they took that picture.

The scene shifts to a few minutes before the photo was taken. Hae-sung runs across campus as a younger Jung-won waits impatiently for him. When they finally find each other in the school hallway, both of their faces light up.

Jung-won pulls Hae-sung into a classroom and declares his hair a disgrace to his family, ha. She motions for him to submit to a hairstyle correction, and when she touches his temple to wipe some of his sweat away, the slight contact wipes the grin right off Hae-sung’s face.

ReunitedWorlds01-00046.jpg ReunitedWorlds01-00042.jpg

The spell is broken when Jung-won pulls her hand away, and Hae-sung teases her for wearing makeup for her school photo. She orders him to close his eyes, so he doesn’t see that her lips are barely an inch from his as she fixes his hair.

They’re not alone, and their friends snicker at their obvious attraction to each other. They call out friendly taunts, asking if they’re preparing to take their wedding photos, hee.

It’s Hae-sung’s turn, but he freezes up and just stares at the camera. Jung-won steps forward to help him out, acting silly to try and make him smile. When she makes a cute little pig-nose, Hae-sung bursts into laughter, and the photographer snaps the picture that will soon grace his tomb.

COMMENTS

When my expectations are as high as they’ve been for Reunited Worlds, I try to go into the show with a sort of cautious hopefulness. I keep my excitement tempered by a healthy dose of realism, earned from years of being mildly disappointed when a show doesn’t quite live up to the wonderment I’ve built up in my head. At minimum, I expect a show to deliver what it promised in the teasers, and it’s wonderful when a drama lives up to the hype. That happens often enough to keep me coming back for more, but what’s not so common is when a show exceeds my expectations. This is one of those shows.

I knew the show had great casting and interesting characterizations going for it (just Yeo Jin-gu’s presence pretty much guarantees that), along with beautiful cinematography and a unique, heartbreaking story. I didn’t expect to be so moved, to have a simple shot of a window in the sunlight take my breath away, or to find myself tearing up several times just from an actor’s facial expressions. I think we’re in for something truly special.

ReunitedWorlds01-00097.jpg

Of course, the best thing about Reunited Worlds is the casting, and naturally, Yeo Jin-gu is already blowing me away. That’s only to be expected. But I’m also already in love with the four sidekicks, who have apparently failed to mature a single day since their high school days, and who made such a big impression in their one short scene together that I can’t wait to see more of them. In particular, I was impressed with Jung Chae-yeon’s portrayal of the young, cheeky Jung-won — I’ve only seen her in Drinking Solo, where I thought she did a fairly good job with a character that was pretty one-note. I’m enjoying seeing her as an animated and spirited young woman, so much so that I hope the show continues to weave the past and the present together as it did in this episode. It was executed seamlessly, and I thought it was a great way to introduce us to the drama’s world and its inhabitants, so it would be nice to see that style of storytelling continue.

I like that Hae-sung’s death isn’t so simple as an accident, and that there’s a mystery surrounding what happened that night in the school. Aside from his waking up twelve years after his death (and he really did die — I’ve been assuming that he somehow disappeared and everyone assumed he’d died), I’m anxious to know why Hae-sung suddenly seems to have superhuman strength and an uncanny healing ability, and what those three entwined falling stars had to do with his return. And there were so many mentions of other factors that will flesh out the primary story, such as the hints about Hae-sung’s family situation. It’s all much more complex than I anticipated, and I can’t wait to see how Hae-sung copes with his new and frightening reality as he tries to right the wrongs of the past.

I love a show that doesn’t spoon-feed its audience information, letting us find the little hints of what’s to come all on our own. This premiere had so many of those tiny moments, the kind that could mean nothing or everything. Moments such as Jung-won not noticing the vicious fight happening right behind her. The fact that Young-joon distances himself from his family and does nothing but study, and the hint that Hae-sung and his siblings may not actually be related.

And I found Jung-won and Jin-ju’s conversation in the present very interesting… when Jin-ju told Jung-won to stop pining, I couldn’t help but wonder if Jung-won has never dated since Hae-sung died. Because I’ll love it if, twelve years later, they get to be each other’s first kiss. These small teasers (and there were so many in this episode) tell me that this isn’t going to be just a straightforward tale about a boy who mysteriously returns twelve years after his death, but that this tale is going to be rich with nuance and meaning. That’s a lot of words to say that so far, I love everything about this show. It feels like I’ve just barely dipped my toe into a pool, and that what we see on the surface is only a tiny part of the depth this show has to offer. Rarely am I this optimistic about a drama after only one episode, but I believe strongly that Reunited Worlds won’t be letting us down.

  • Reunited Worlds: Episodes 3-4ReunitedWorlds0304-00065.jpg

Hae-sung begins to try to piece together what happened to him in 2005 and why he’s mysteriously back. It’s a hard lesson to learn as he realizes that his death was a tragic event to everyone who knew him, and that they’ve suffered from his loss. Every answer only leads to more questions, and increasingly strange events point to much more going on than a simple second chance at life.

COMMENTS

I can’t even imagine what Hae-sung must be going through right now. It must be bad enough to wake up and find out that twelve years has passed, and everyone you know has grown up and created lives without you. But to learn that those lives have all been negatively impacted in some way because of you must be devastating. Hae-sung was such a sweet, innocent kid, and now he’s faced with the fact that he was branded a murderer after he died, and that the lives of those he loves were ruined while as far as he knows, no time at all has passed. Now I’m sure he’s going to feel responsible for fixing things, which isn’t going to be easy for so many reasons, not the least of which is that he’s still a sweet, innocent kid.

As for Jung-won, I can’t imagine the crushing guilt she’s been living under for over a decade, thinking that it’s her fault that Hae-sung died. She’s been beating herself up ever since then, thinking that if she hadn’t sent him to the school, then he would have never been in that accident. Then to complicate things, the whole world thinks that Hae-sung killed Jung-chul before dying himself, and though it’s obvious that Jung-won doesn’t believe it, it has to have added yet another layer to her already crushing guilt. She probably thinks it’s also her fault that Hae-sung was branded a murderer. No wonder she could barely face her friends after that day. And speaking of ruined lives, I’m very concerned about Hae-sung’s siblings, since Hae-sung’s legacy of being a murderer will have tainted all of their lives. We know that Hae-chul had no choice but to become a loan shark, and I’m pretty sure that the waitress at Jung-won’s restaurant is the littlest sister, Soo-ji. But where are Young-joon and Young-in? Was Young-joon able to go to medical school?

And speaking of ruined lives, I’m very concerned about Hae-sung’s siblings, since Hae-sung’s legacy of being a murderer will have tainted all of their lives. Was Young-joon able to go to medical school?

The whole deal with Hae-sung’s inhuman abilities is really pretty much freaking me out. So far we know he’s stronger than normal, he has the ability to heal in an instant, he has unnaturally sharp hearing, and when he’s upset he can explode streetlights (I’m assuming the light that was flickering outside Jung-won’s apartment was damaged when Hae-sung was attacked). Then there’s the triple comet that appeared when Hae-sung woke up, and the man who seemed to know at a glance that Hae-sung “came back†recently, which makes me think that Hae-sung isn’t the first person this has happened to.

What this tells me is that there’s more to Hae-sung’s return than just a supernatural resurrection — he’s changed. He’s not the same Hae-sung who died twelve years ago, at the very least, he’s fundamentally altered into something that’s no longer entirely human. It could also be a sign that he’s not here to just resume his life, but to accomplish something, and I fear that once he fulfills whatever purpose he was brought back to fulfill, that he’ll be taken away again.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

Four shows premiered this week and I already feel hopelessly behind! Sometimes this dramaland machine feels like it moves way too fast to possibly keep abreast of it all… but then of course then there are stretches when it feels like nothing is interesting, so I suppose I’ll take death by gluttony over starved boredom. â€“javabeans

-----

javabeans

  • Reunited Worlds: I didn’t know what to expect of the fantasy element, but I was pleasantly surprised by it—it’s like The Best Hit with superpowers. I really enjoyed the structuring of the show in how it wove the flashbacks into the present storyline, which got us the necessary backstory but also gave us gratifying glimpses into the future (rather than doing the typical format of starting off an episode or two in the past, then skipping to the future). I don’t know if this show will break my heart down the line, but it’s so cute and breezy now that I’m eager for more.

girlfriday

  • Reunited Worlds: The drama did a good job of establishing how integral Yeo Jin-gu was to his family and friends, so that we understood right away how they could’ve fallen apart without him. The overall tone is very breezy and light, but I like the show better during the darker, mysterious moments. I like that there’s a murder mystery to solve, and that we’re not quite sure how dangerous Yeo Jin-gu’s sudden superpowers are. I’m sure I’m being set up for heartbreak in this one, but what can I do?

HeadsNo2

  • Reunited Worlds: I went into this show well and truly blind, having only known that Yeo Jin-gu would be in a high school uniform again. It’s charming enough and interesting enough, what with the supernatural aspect going on, but after two episodes (or four, however this new counting system is going), I’m not dying to know what happens next. There wasn’t enough emotional impact for me when our hero was “reunited†with those who thought he was dead, which seems like a strangely missed opportunity, unless they’re deliberately trying to keep the tone of the show lighter than the subject matter.
