Fan Fiction Writing Tips?

I have always been interested in writing in general so writing a fan fiction is something that appeals to me. Does anyone have any must-know information I need to have to write a good fan fiction? I'll most likely be starting off with a short story. Obviously I must use formal writing, etc, but I feel like there are certain things required in a well written fan fic. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

If you are writing for fictional characters, don't do that whole project your thoughts and vendettas on characters thing, unless it is AU.

If you write smut, please be smart and realistic.

Always, reread, and edit (if possible get a beta)

Remember your tenses. If it is past tense, keep the entire thing in past tense.

A thesarus is nice, but don't get long winded and use big ass words to sound cool. Dpending on what you are writing, the audience may or may not undrstand what you are trying to say with five or six big kid words in a single sentence.

Do not be that author that decided to insert little commentary in the middle of the story. It is tacky, and disrupts the flow. Use the author's notes (if you decide to have them) for that.

Don't do that whole thing where you create dialogue with characters in the Author's notes...once again tacky, and unneccessary.

Be realistic. Even if you have to be realistic in a supernatural setting, you have limits, and chances are the series you are writing for has set rules. Please obey them.

▪Dont be too cliché. Try to freshen it up.

I.e. If you read SNSD fics its always the same thing.

-Sooyoung is a shikshin

-Hyoyeon is a dancing machine.

-Jessica is cold.

-Yuri is a player.

-Taeyeon is a byuntae. Etc etc etc.

â–ªUse pairings that are "alive".

I.e. Taeny=Alive HyoNi(HyoxNicoleKara)=6 feet under

â–ªDont write an overused plot, but if you do make it fresh and your own.

â–ªIf you write smut, dont rush it,use good detail and word choice, or if you cant write smuts you could ask experienced authors in smuts. I would reccomend Madameunhye (exo writer),Choppies(snsd writer) or MissLovelyGee (Min centric writer.). Im not sure if they would do it but it wouldnt hurt to ask.

â–ªOrganize your work. Indent. Space words out. Use easy to read font. Use reasonable font size. Check spellkng and grammar.(Use beta if you need too)

â– Try to update at least 1-3/a week if you can.(if you can do more go right ahead!). If you cant update for a while for what ever reason , let your readers know.

1st person is the most popular with casual fanfic readers (I think), although I like both. If you're writing a light story, you should use 1st person. 3rd person if it's a complicated, darker tale that suits more advanced readers.

If it's a chicklit type of fan fiction, it's okay to have the 'cliché vibe' to make it enjoyable, but it should also be more fresh and different. Your title is very important too...must catch attention, but it should be creative as well.

One more quick question for now, does "shipping" refer to which Kpop idols you choose to be in your story?

If you'er going to say you're shipping idk yunjae or something. You are going to be shipping Yunho and Jaejoong. Or Taeny you'd be shipping Tiffany and Taeyeon.

Or you can have a story featuring both/multiple "ships". Of course it's up to you who ends up together or not in the end.

Shipping just refers to which couple is the focus of your story.

just watch out for your grammar (spelling, punctuations, etc). i know that English is not everybody's first language, but do write your best so that people could understand what you are talking about.

also, there are paragraphs for a reason. if there is a change in scenery, POV, dialogue, etc, hit enter and start a new line.

PLEASE stick with 3rd person. Most fanfiction is done in third. 1st person doesn't really work for fanfiction tbh. But, ah, I am biased.

Do fun, ORIGINAL, CREATIVE plots!

But most of all, have fun!

  • 1 month later...

Is it a good idea to write a bunch of chapters in advance and then upload them one at a time or update as you go along?

I'd say write as you go but it works either way.

For example, If I wrote the whole story and planned on uploading them once a week, I would want to upload more because the viewers want some and all. I can't help it :P

I prefer writing as I go but sometimes it can create delays, so...
