I loved this drama so much. It was refreshing and new and kept me interested throughout all the episodes. They left the ending opened, I hope that they think about making a season 2 sometime in the future, because this has so much potential to be great.

Finally done watching Episode 12.

I hate that Chairman Park went off that way. I was hoping he'll get imprisoned and suffer all the consequences but I guess they made his character someone who is greedy enough to even put his life at risk just to get what he wants.

I somewhat feel for sunbae Lee but in the end, he has to pay for all the sins he has done. Good thing he made the right choice of not ending his life.

Is it just me or everyone else thinks that the officer with glasses who's holding Ho Soo got so much screentime even at the end?

I find myself giggling like a teenager when Joon Hyuk visited Min Young at the hospital to treat his burns in the end as well. LMAO. Even moreso than Byeol and Woo Jin's moments in the end. Haha. I'm a JH-MY trash.

Regarding the ending being somewhat left open for interpretation. My guess is that even if they have succeed in their mission in bringing down Human B, there are still other stuff in the future that human beings are not aware of. Wherever Byeol came from, I believe she was meant to be sent to aid the human beings in whichever way possible with their advanced technologies similar to how Byeol's ability to put memories in videos can help cure patients suffering from PTSD. It's just that such technologies fell on the hands of a greedy and evil person like Chairman Park. The reporter mentioned similar sighting happened in 1986 which means Byeol wasn't the first alien to have come to earth and meddle with the lives of the human beings. With the arrival of this new alien in 2037, this proves that they do send their technologies on earth and it is up to the human beings on how they will handle such advanced technologies.

Overall, I totally love the series. I love the pacing of the drama and how the cliffhangers always kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope to see more of this kind of premise in future dramas.

Shoutout to FranCella for all the selcas/updates/reviews in this thread. Keep up the good work. Aja!

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Circle" Episode 11

photo861765.jpg

The end is almost here and episode eleven of "Circle" takes steps I did not think Korean drama writers would be bold enough for. In 2017, Woo-jin finds himself with few options for saving his brother and his friends. In 2037, Joon-hyeok and Jeong-yeon struggle with the truth staring at them on that stairwell. The titular "Circle" pushes everyone over the unknown edge of what defines us as individuals and as ourselves.

The episode is very much about different mindsets and their dangers. Gyoo-cheol put a stop to things and Jeong-yeon (Gong Seung-yeon) chose to forget, because they both understood the weight of her existence. The series presents three types of scientists with three different mindsets. One ethical, another chaotic and unstoppable, the third one greedy and narcissistic. Essentially, it poses a question. Can we trust such power to a flawed race?

photo861764.jpgphoto861763.jpg

As for the big elephant clone in the room, I could sit here for days and type out different thoughts and opinions, but at the end of the day it would not matter. Maybe you feel the person ends with their biological demise. Maybe you feel they move on. Maybe you feel the soul exists and can jump based on memories, giving it continuity. Maybe you feel the soul can only move on or reincarnate according to set religious belief. The series accommodates different views on the matter.

This is smart for an audience used to getting what it wants and it is also a better way to make said audience think, but it could go very wrong when dealing with the journey of two characters we have become invested in. The reason why our individual views ultimately do not matter, however, is because the two leading characters or their copies, if we consider the amnesiac Joon-hyeok (Kim Kang-woo) not-entirely Beom-gyoon (An Woo-yeon) either, are on the same page and feel like they have found each other.

photo861762.jpgphoto861761.jpg

Of course they are not out of the woods yet. Woo-jin Mk. III (Yeo Jin-goo) is called Circulate 3 for a reason and we know Dong-geon (Han Sang-jin) wants the cloning bill to be passed. Perhaps the clones have a limited life span. It would explain why someone fresh from stasis can jump up and walk. Whatever happens to the brothers, however, they have completed their narrative purpose of finding and saving one another in this peculiar form that this goal has taken.

Before the finale I want to say that this series has been a pleasure to cover and a surprise. I did not believe a Korean drama would dive right into existential topics as this has. While it has not done something novel for science fiction, "Circle" has done a lot for its medium with its genre, subject matter and more. Kill me softly, "Circle". I am (not) ready.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Circle" Episode 12 Final

photo862642.jpg&key=9e50fdbc0697938a7d73

It is closure o'clock and our characters have to work for it. With Dong-geon and Human B in pursuit, the team must come up with a plan for exposing his wrongdoings while keeping everyone safe. There are hugs, there are tears, there is punishment and redemption as the system of control collapses before everyone's eyes. It has been a long journey for everyone and who knows what the future still holds?

The final episode is essentially a big chase sequence and after so much has been established and resolved, this is more than enough. Our villains pay for their sins in "dramaproppriate" ways, the system collapses and the fight continues. History repeats itself because humanity changes slowly and needs every little push. We have those who cannot be saved, those who have seen the light and carry the torch forward and those who are just happy to have peace.

photo862641.jpg&key=2546c3c3c9d8ea4a4e46photo862640.jpg&key=56c9442ff71d32c36b74

I know many will be eager for a second season I am most certain will never come given the first one's lack of popularity, but I am actually okay with this ending. Byeol's (Gong Seung-yeon) nature as an alien has never really been the focus of the series. Even her technology is not the main idea. This is a drama about two brothers who love each other and about the value of our memories in who we are. It is also one about the importance of having the freedom of choice over our own lives.

The series continues to not pick a side on the argument of what makes us human and what makes each person themselves, and Jeong-yeon's words make this clear. This outcome is the journey of these characters and these characters feel like what they have now is enough. It does not matter who Woo-jin (Yeo Jin-goo) is or was. This is Woo-jin to them and they have defeated their own demons by doing what they have always felt is right, whether we like or accept it or not.

photo862639.jpg&key=bd4c2acf24a9d60e13c3photo862638.jpg&key=be16e4385b6bb19b04f6

I do have my complaints with "Circle" and its antagonists are the biggest. Dong-geon's (Han Sang-jin) personality transplant when his villainous side surfaced was sudden and his new self so cartoonish that it feels as if he came straight out of another, lesser series. His ridiculous demise fit that cartoonish image a little too well, as I had flashbacks to Wile E. Coyote and had to remove myself from the episode and regain composure.

There are other, minor issues, such as the sudden development of Hyeon-seok (Min Seong-wook), which felt like a way to please viewers without having to kill him. As for the overall series, the only things I truly lament are the lack of interest from local audiences and how rare such a story still is. I hope we will see a day when something like this ranks low on the Korean drama quality bar.

  • Circle: Episode 11
  • circle11-250.jpg

The tables have turned once again, and I’m loving it! Instead of being outmaneuvered by Human B’s nefarious villains, Woo-jin takes charge of his own destiny and begins his plot to trap them instead. Instead of being just book smart, we see that Woo-jin is resourceful and clever on his feet as well, and that he’s always ready to sacrifice himself for those he loves. Then again, I guess if my friends and family were on the line, I’d be willing to make some sacrifices too.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

Opening up the USB file containing his father’s research, Woo-jin thinks he’s found the way to save Bum-gyun’s life at last. And when a video of his father describing his research pops up, Woo-jin’s face breaks out in a relieved grin… until he realizes that this video isn’t an explanation of the research at all. In the video, his father explains that he destroyed all his research, effectively ending the Beta Project: “I decided that this technology isn’t something that humans should have.â€

In a series of flashbacks, we see that Kim Kyu-chul had been confronted by a dilemma when he realized that Byul’s memory technology had the potential to ruin lives. Despite the fact that the technology could be used to help people with PTSD, Kim Kyu-chul had argued furiously against it when a younger version of Professor Han tried to persuade him to continue with the research, since Han believed that the removal of unpleasant memories would allow them, as imperfect as they were, to create a brave new world without crime or war.

circle11-06616.jpg circle11-06546.jpg

But to that line of argument, Kim Kyu-chul had said, “But imperfect human beings will be in control of that technology. Someone will definitely try to take control of it! If that happens, people will be able to manipulate the memories of others, and will even be able to control them!â€

Byul, who was watching their argument, went up to Kyu-chul after Professor Han was gone and asked for her memory to be erased. “I didn’t consider humanity’s greed,†she’d said. “It would be better to get rid of this technology than to allow it to be used for dark purposes.â€

circle11-07841.jpg

After the deed was done, Professor Han had demanded to know where Byul was, desperate to obtain that technology. Even after Kyu-chul told him that Byul’s memories were gone, Han refused to believe it, and had attempted to persuade Kyu-chul by pointing toward a group of threatening men down the hallway, headed by a younger Detective Choi. “If things go wrong, you and I could both end up dying,†Professor Han added.

However, in the video that Woo-jin watches, his father says the data was destroyed because he made an ethical decision to stop the research. Woo-jin reels back in shock as he finally registers that there’s no research data for him to use, and thus, there’s no way for him to save Bum-gyun.

It puts Woo-jin in a daze as he realizes that the information he needs to save his brother will only be obtained if he agrees to do as Professor Han threatened him to. But he snaps out of it quickly when Min-young calls in a frantic voice to tell him that Bum-gyun’s in trouble, and that they’re on the way to the hospital.

circle11-00005-1.jpg circle11-11551.jpg

Woo-jin arrives to the hospital in time to see the doctors use a defibrillator on his flatlined brother, who’s gone into cardiac arrest. The doctors try shock after shock, until finally, Bum-gyun’s pulse returns. Woo-jin all but collapses in relief, finally able to breathe again.

When Min-young’s father explains Bum-gyun’s state to the group (consisting of Chief Hong, Min-young, Woo-jin, and Jung-yeon), he lets them know that Bum-gyun will only worsen and has a high chance of dying if the blue bug inside his brain isn’t removed.

And because the bug has burrowed into the brain so deep, Min-young’s father says that the only people with the proper expertise to remove it would be its creators, or the people who inserted it in the first place.

circle11-00131a.jpg circle11-00122a.jpg

Hearing this, Jung-yeon tries to secretly text her father, saying that she’ll agree to his terms and try her best to recover her memory as Byul if he makes sure that Bum-gyun receives his life-saving surgery. However, Woo-jin catches her, and remembering that his father said that Byul made the choice to erase her memories, he stops her from sending Professor Han the text.

He also reassures her by showing her the crucifix USB, lying that it’s his father’s research data, which he plans on using to bargain with Professor Han. It’s enough to fool Jung-yeon, even as Woo-jin thinks of his father saying that the research no longer exists.

“Circle†producer Min Jin Ki said in an interview on June 28, “It’s an open ending. Depending on the imagination of the viewers, they could interpret the ending in different ways. There were a lot of stories that we weren’t able to fit into just 12 episodes, and the ending reflects that. However, a second season is not something that is being considered at this stage.â€

  • Circle: Episode 12 (Final)circle12-66781.jpg

The two worlds have collided, and the disparate timelines have merged. Now, all that remains is for our heroes to find a way to defeat the all-powerful Human B and escape Smart Earth with their lives and memories intact. Tall order? Maybe. But this group of loyal, stubborn friends have stuck to their guns through years of loneliness and oppression. Now that they’re together, nothing will stop them from giving the evil corporation running Smart Earth a run for their money.

FINAL EPISODE RECAP

Running from Professor Park and his goons, Woo-jin comes out of the woods and stumbles straight into the path of an oncoming car. It hits him at high speed, and he goes hurtling through the air before falling hard on the asphalt.

As blood pools under his head, he reaches toward the broken star as he thinks of his brother and Jung-yeon. The alien cube that powered the device dims as the life ebbs out of Woo-jin.

Sometime later, Woo-jin lies in a coma in a hospital room, the cube in a glass box on the side table. Professor Park stares at his unmoving body, while Sunbae Lee sits by the door with his head clasped in his hands. The surgeon who operated on Bum-gyun and Min-young arrives and tells the professor that it’s uncertain whether either will wake up any time soon, or if they will even retain their memories.

circle12-04166.jpg

Min-young wakes up though, and the first person she asks about is Bum-gyun. Chief Hong takes her to the boy and tells her that they don’t know when or if he will ever wake up. Leaving her by Bum-gyun’s side, Chief Hong emerges from the room and receives an email from Woo-jin. In it, Woo-jin tells Chief Hong to give Bum-gyun the memory footage stored in a hard drive, in case he doesn’t regain his own.

Chief Hong finds the external hard drive in Woo-jin’s backpack and tries to call Woo-jin, only to hear his voicemail. Just then, Chief Hong gets a call from his superior telling him that he’s been transferred to the Cyber Crimes Unit. Min-young runs out of the hospital room and says that she also just received a pre-scheduled email from Woo-jin that told her he wouldn’t be able to return. “I feel like something bad happened to Woo-jin,†Chief Hong concludes worriedly.

Jung-yeon gets to a safe place and plugs in her phone to her laptop. Going through the images on her phone, she comes across the one she and Woo-jin had laughed over. Remembering how she’d told him to smile more, Jung-yeon tears up in the present. Suddenly, an email notification pops up, and Jung-yeon gets her own pre-scheduled email from Woo-jin. In it is another video of Woo-jin, but this time, he says that if he isn’t back by now, then his plan must have failed. He tells her to hide and never look for him.

circle12-08471.jpg circle12-08506.jpg

Even as Jung-yeon shakes her head, Woo-jin says he knows that it would go against the grain for her. But he adds that if she doesn’t protect herself, then she would be wasting his sacrifice as well as Byul’s.

As tears stream down Jung-yeon’s face, Video Woo-jin tells her that he’ll definitely come back to her and Bum-gyun — it’ll just take him a little longer than he’d expected. “Wait just a little bit longer,†Woo-jin says, adding a small, reassuring smile.

We return to 2037, and to the scene that ended the last episode as Woo-jin remembers what he’d said to Bum-gyun back in the hospital room: “Hyung, I’m scared. I’ll.. be back.â€

Circle12-00382-2.jpg Circle12-00386-2.jpg

With tears streaming down his face, Joon-hyuk asks if Woo-jin was leaving to meet Professor Park when he said those words to him. “Were you going to trade my surgery for dad’s research? Is that what you were scared of?†Joon-hyuk asks.

Sobbing with grief, Joon-hyuk apologizes for letting Woo-jin go alone and pulls his little brother into a hug. While Woo-jin resists at first, still believing himself to be a clone, his face crumples up as he hugs Joon-hyuk back.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

by DB Staff

  • I blinked and it’s suddenly July, which means that there’s a whole new crop of dramas appearing on the horizon. I’m actually a little sad that the current drama cycle is starting to wind down, because it’s a good batch of shows, and I think we all have the panda eyes to prove it. â€“girlfriday

javabeans

  • Circle: Goddamn, this show rocked my world. Between this drama and Seven Day Queen I’m already content with 2017. Perhaps Circle isn’t everyone’s thing, and that’s a valid opinion (…which is wrong!), but for me it was a perfect show. I loved that even with the clever plot and twists, it didn’t forget to have a heart—ultimately, the story was driven by love. And while I never wanted this show to be about romance, I was happy to have romantic hints at the end—one, because romantic love is a powerful human motivator and that’s a lovely sentiment in a drama all about what makes us truly human, and two, because it felt like a sign that life could finally move on. I bawled buckets, the show ended, and my heart was full.

girlfriday

  • Circle: Well-played, Circle. Everything about this drama felt thought out and painstakingly blueprinted, and the result was extremely satisfying to watch, like watching a Rubik’s Cube lock into place once it’s finally solved. But what made me happy was that the core emotional conflict of the two separated brothers always remained at the center of this universe, and that we were allowed to really savor the big important emotional beats and cry all we wanted. I went into this finale week with sky-high expectations, and I was not let down, which is frankly pretty shocking.

HeadsNo2

  • Circle: So… good… brain… broken…

tipsymocha

  • Circle: Ugh Yeo Jin-gu, why you gotta break my heart like that? But tragic as it is, I kind of like that Circle went there with what happened to his character. It made for an interesting, albeit brief, moment where 2037 Bum-gyun had to put his money where his mouth is in terms of whether memories are what make the person who they are. When they mentioned that the clone was Circle 8-III, though, my heart broke all over again because I don’t want to think of what happened to 1 and 2. Is it masochistic of me to hope we get some more backstory into them in Season 2? Because there will be a Season 2, right?!
