Circle: Episode 8

circle08-69356.jpg

  • The villains may be motivated as much by a misguided desire to help people as they are for personal gain, but in either case, Jung-yeon is determined not to let herself be used for their purposes. One brother helps her come to terms with her identity in the present, while the other fights against the bigger evil in the future, both driven to fight despite impossible odds.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

It’s 2008, and Professor Park walks into Kim Kyu-chul’s house, which was rented to him by his colleague, Professor Han. While the men chat, an unobtrusive camera hidden in a tiny star on the ceiling scans Professor Park and tags him as someone without authorization. Professor Park hands a small box full of blue worms to Kim Kyu-chul, asking why he wanted to see them. Kim Kyu-chul reassures him that it’s only curiosity, which seems to satisfy his younger hoobae.

Kim Kyu-chul tells him that he wants to make a comeback after the trouble he caused for the sake of his children. Professor Park asks after the twins, then wonders what his senior could be working on. Kim Kyu-chul promises to tell him everything and invites him for a meal.

Part 1: Beta Project

Woo-jin tries to convince a distraught Professor Han that he knows nothing about his father’s life as a neuroscientist. He begs to have his brother returned to him and promises to disappear without causing any legal problems for Professor Han.

His professor just laughs, grabbing Woo-jin’s face like he wants to crush it. “Do I look sane to you?†he asks, adding that the moment he started his illegal experiments, he crossed a line that he had to keep crossing over and over again. “I killed people,†he tells Woo-jin, looking momentarily pained as he does so.

But the pained expression turns into one of desperation as Professor Han insists that Woo-jin must find his father’s research. “If you can’t find it, I’ll never stop. This tiresome experiment will continue on and more people will have to die,†Professor Han grits out. For extra motivation, he threatens Bum-gyun’s life too, should Woo-jin not find what he wants.

When Woo-jin emerges out of the deserted hospital, the dirty cop hands him his backpack and warns him against reporting what happened, since he’s not the only policeman involved in this. Woo-jin takes a call from Jung-yeon in front of the cop and says that he found nothing on Professor Han’s laptop. Dirty Cop smirks and tells him to quickly finish the assignment his professor gave him.

Woo-jin gets back to his apartment and rummages through the few items of his dad that he has with him. He comes across a business card from Kim Kyu-chul’s life as a researcher. He decides to try and log into his dad’s email account, but gets stuck at the security question when he opts to change the password.

Thinking back, he remembers how his father had taught him how to ride a bicycle, and in answer to the “most prized possession†security question, he types in “the twins.â€

When it’s accepted, Woo-jin gets angry at the father who deceived them and brought them to their current state, though he almost fondly unfurls the business card he crumpled up after his short burst and wipes away his tears.

Chief Hong lets the facts of the case percolate in his mind as he sketches in his notebook. It’s then that he gets a visit from his superior, who wants him to take his hands off the serial suicide case. Furious, Chief Hong borrows a lollipop from Dirty Cop and stomps out of the station.

Woo-jin scrolls through pages of emails until he comes to one with a mysterious subject and an attachment. The file is compressed and needs a password to be unzipped. After trying every word and name he can think of, Woo-jin tries calling his student, Dong-soo.

Dong-soo is unreachable by phone, but Woo-jin tracks him down to a gaming den, where the kid is playing hooky from school. When Woo-jin asks if he’s a hacker, Dong-soo becomes concerned that his tutor has stalker-ish tendencies toward a girl he’s dating, but he agrees to help him in exchange for a favor.

Dong-soo sets up a program to run through all possible password combinations on Woo-jin’s laptop, then sits back as Woo-jin stews in his impatience. He tries to explain to Dong-soo how important it is for him to see what’s inside the file, and realizing his tutor’s urgency, Dong-soo decides to use a different method.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching?

javabeans
  • Circle: It’s a joy to have a drama that satisfies consistently—I appreciate that I can sit back knowing that it’s going somewhere concrete and fascinating but that I can’t necessarily see more than a step ahead. It’s twisty in a smart way, and the story corners on a dime. I don’t even particularly feel the need to predict or speculate; I’m just enjoying the ride.

girlfriday
  • Circle: It wrecked me when Kim Kang-woo turned into a sad little puppy this week. He spent ten years of his life dedicated to the single-minded pursuit of finding his brother, only to be hit with the possibility that he doesn’t want to be found? *wimper* Say it ain’t soooo!

HeadsNo2
  • Circle: This show is blowing my mind right now. It’s really daring to go where no other Korean drama has gone before, and its exploration of how memory impacts us raises a lot of interesting and important questions. The narrative is especially taut, with surprises in both timelines each week, but it’s Lee Ki-kwang’s character I’m especially drawn to. He’s just so insanely tragic and in need of hugs. And also maybe a little revenge.

TeriYaki
  • Circle: I watched the first episode and decided that I’d like the rest of my family to check it out. It has an alien, a post-apocalyptic future, and a utopian city—something for everybody! It’s on hold until I can see if anyone wants to join me.

tipsymocha
  • Circle: Man, I wish our good guys were less trusting and more resourceful. ‘Cause they walk into a lot of traps and it’s doing bad things to my nerves. I love how the two timelines and the conflicts in them both boil down to a single theme, because really good sci-fi will pose questions or concepts that can be universally applied. It’s fascinating how the age-old question of whether the end justifies the means is affecting our main characters in both timelines: whether it’s the crazy professor’s belief that his cure to human misery is worth his unscrupulous experimentation on people, or if the surface-level harmony of Smart Earth is worth the memory theft of its inhabitants, even if that means blissful oblivion for those who have committed crimes. Love it. Also, I knew that assistant professor was shifty!

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Circle" Episode 9

photo859343.jpg&key=fb6c302316de098e09d3

Episode nine of "Circle" answers a lot of questions about the chip technology's origins and it raises a few very dark ones about its current condition and Woo-jin's existence in 2037. In 2017, Beom-gyoon has been found only to be lost again as his memories are wiped by the bug and Dong-geon takes over Yong-woo's research on behalf of someone who has been running it in the shadows all along.

Joys do not last long in the world of "Circle" and the twins' reunion is a short-lived joy. We have known that Beom-gyoon (An Woo-yeon) lost his memories back in 2017, but his recognition of his captor gave me hope that the brothers would have time to bond before the bug wiped everything clean. It is sad to see the two constantly miss each other, but it makes for good drama. The technology which keeps them apart is truly horrible.

Han Yong-soo (Song Young-kyu) faces a worthy fate as its first victim and its functions are now clearer. I am still piecing some things together, but it seems like Byeol's (Gong Seung-yeon) method did not require a bug, chip or other carrier for the code. The reason why the research does not work for others is because it lacks her non-invasive ways. The star she created seems to act as a security system and a scanner which can detect, copy and possibly alter the biology its light can see.

Which brings me to the talk of cloning in this episode and a very grim possibility. If Woo-jin's (Yeo Jin-goo) physical presence is what runs Byeol's technology, then his body would be enough to run the system. Woo-jin could very well be a dead, as Yong-woo says, or a comatose human battery running the company's supercomputer as Human B. Perhaps that is why Dong-geon (Han Sang-jin) wants the cloning bill to pass so badly. New battery, new possibilities.

photo859340.jpg&key=1cf2e37715bd10b3b850photo859339.jpg&key=bea1dfb6f7c9516b74a1

Of course Byeol/Jeong-yeon is the better option and that is why Dong-geon wants her. She truly is a very tragic character. She created something to give a boy back his precious memories, yet this system has been twisted. Everyone sees her as a tool for their personal quests. She has lost a father and in this episode we realize that Woo-jin does not hold her emotional well-being as a priority either.

As much as I love this packed episode, it is worrisome that new characters enter the scene near the drama's end. "Circle" has not been doing well in the ratings and sequels are still rare in Korean drama. I hope that we will not be left hanging. While mysteries such as Byeol's origins can stay unknown, a lot of them need wrapping up. Please end as well as you have progressed, "Circle".

Let's say they took the DNA of Woo Jin in 2017. If he was indeed cloned on that year, then 2037 Woo Jin clone would resemble 2017 Woo Jin in physical appearance since he would be 20 years old in 2037.

LOL. I was actually thinking maybe it was Yeo Jin Goo that Joon Hyuk and Jeong Yeon discovered at the house towards the end of the episode and thus solidifying the possibility that he was indeed cloned due to not appearing the same age as Joon Hyuk. Haha.

Erm i had a same thoughts as you,

im wondering if Woo Jin's face will not change? unlike JH?

Even professor han, has bit changes with having a gray hair & beard laugh.png

Yay. I guess I'm not the only one then. Have you seen Episode 9 already? The mention of cloning gave me the idea he was cloned. And towards the end of the episode, I was wondering who they saw inside the room and the idea of seeing Yeo Jin Goo as Kim Woo Jin in that room warrants that kind of expression since I believe Joon Hyuk/Beom Gyeon didn't really have any recollection of some sort with Professor Han to be that surprised. Haha.

ofcause ive watched it lol, even Mon-Tues has a tons of great dramas, this SciFi drama is a Must to watch first! hurrplz.png

bout Woo jin, i dont think they gonna reveal him in Ep.9, perhaps during finale eps? who knows laugh.png
