Circle: Episode 4

Hurtling along at breakneck speed, Circle keeps us riveted to the two timelines as Woo-jin and Joon-hyuk each find an answer to a crucial question. Woo-jin battles distrust and confusion about the girl who could be an alien, while Joon-hyuk seeks to understand why a perceived enemy might be helping them.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Ten years ago. Little Bum-gyun sits in his room, timing himself as he solves the Rubik’s cube. Outside, Woo-jin is working on his homework on the living room floor. When their strange guest walks through the room and almost steps on his project, he shows her his chart of the planets and asks where she’s from: “Jupiter? Mars?†Bum-gyun calls Woo-jin into his room to challenge him to a race to solve the cube’s puzzle. As the timer ticks the seconds by, Bum-gyun looks worriedly at Woo-jin’s progress, until Woo-jin wins. He tells his older brother gleefully that no matter his high marks in school, Bum-gyun will always lose to him. Then, blowing a raspberry, the little imp runs out of the room.

Bum-gyun chases him into the living room, where the sight of something stops them in their tracks. Then, Woo-jin’s face breaks into a grin as he tells his brother: “See? I told you she’s from outer space.†We don’t see what surprised them, but their eerie guest turns her head to look at the brothers.

Part 1: Beta Project

Woo-jin discovers the blue worm in a pot in Jung-yeon’s room, while the mysterious Jung-yeon stands outside a decrepit building called Eunsung Psychiatric Hospital. She gets a call from Woo-jin, and tells him exactly where she is. He tells her that he’ll come to her. Woo-jin scoops up the blue worm into a plastic bag (is that secure enough?) and heads out. Jung-yeon tries the locked gate of the premises and thinks back to the text she got from an unknown number that simply said, “2 p.m. at Eunsung Psychiatric Hospital.†She gets another text that makes her look towards the building, then finds a way inside.

As she walks down the deserted corridor of the hospital, she looks around nervously, until suddenly, a hooded figure appears before her. The figure tackles her to the ground and tries to shock her with a taser. In the struggle, Jung-yeon manages to push the assailant off of her, and hears a distinctly female grunt of pain.

circle04-02.jpg

As she turns to run, the woman grabs her again, and this time manages to bring the taser right up to her neck. Just in time, Woo-jin arrives and pushes her off of Jung-yeon. The hooded woman gets up and runs, while Jung-yeon shouts at Woo-jin to go after her. Woo-jin chases the woman through the narrow streets outside, until he loses sight of her. There’s no one in the next alley, except a woman in a black tracksuit, who walks past him while putting on earphones. Woo-jin gets to the end of the alley and finds a dead end. To the side is a discarded brown jacket, like the one the assailant wore over her black clothes. He looks sharply behind him, but the woman in a tracksuit has already disappeared.

When he gets back to the hospital, Jung-yeon shows him the text the hooded woman had sent her. She suggests that they go to the police with all they know now, but Woo-jin wants some answers first. He shows her the bug and asks why she has it. Jung-yeon tells him that it came out of her dead friend’s body, and that she’d held on to it without knowing what it was until now. Woo-jin asks if she hadn’t trusted him even when they were working together, and Jung-yeon admits that because of Bum-gyun she hadn’t trusted him completely back then, but she does now. Woo-jin asks her if she trusts Bum-gyun’s innocence too, and stresses that he’s not the criminal. Jung-yeon agrees to believe that since Woo-jin does.

Circle04-00111.jpg Circle04-00113.jpg

They take the worms to Chief Hong at the police station and tell him everything. As Woo-jin tries to describe the assailant’s face, he comes up with unhelpful gems like “She has round eyes†and “She looks like a nice person,†which understandably frustrates Jung-yeon. But it seems Chief Hong may be the Korean Sherlock after all, ’cause those vague descriptors are enough for him to come up with a sketch that matches Woo-jin’s memory of the woman. They are very impressed and ask how he got such details out of what Woo-jin said, and he tells them that it’s his sixth sense.

In flashback, though, we see him going through the CCTV footage from the day of Kim Nan-hee’s death. He zooms in on the face of the woman who had visited the student before Woo-jin and Jung-yeon. He gets a clear shot of her face, and his sketch today matches it exactly. Ha. Chief Hong wraps up their interview and gets up, but Woo-jin stops him to add one last detail. He tells the detective about his last conversation with Bum-gyun, and how he’d said that the criminal was “Bluebird.†Jung-yeon frowns at Woo-jin, but stays silent.

Outside the police station, she smacks him hard on the head, observing that he’d doubted her as well. Guessing that the “bluebird†in her email address was what had caused him to search her room, she points out that his brother knows her name and wouldn’t use an alias when referring to “the criminal.â€

Circle04-00151.jpg Circle04-00150.jpg

Woo-jin still thinks it’s an odd coincidence, but Jung-yeon is focused on unraveling the mystery of that name now. Woo-jin notices a bloody tear on Jung-yeon’s jeans and suggests they go to the hospital. Jung-yeon coolly dismisses the cut and says she’ll be fine, but when the doctor puts some antiseptic on it, she starts whimpering like a child with a boo-boo. While she’s being treated, Woo-jin leaves the outpatient ward and runs into Professor Han, who’s walking out of the elevator. They exchange greetings, and the professor says that he’s here to see his child, who got into an accident. When Woo-jin gets back with two cans of coffee, he sees Professor Han sitting with Jung-yeon.

His eyes widen as Jung-yeon introduces him to her dad, the professor. They explain that they’re classmates, and Woo-jin quickly takes his leave. He lingers close enough to listen to the professor teasing his daughter about Woo-jin, and asking if he’s the reason she’s been skipping her treatments. She denies it, but Woo-jin smiles to himself before leaving.

Circle04-00196.jpg Circle04-00209.jpg

As he walks past the bakery near his college, he remembers Bum-gyun working inside and his face falls. Inside the Psychiatric Hospital, Bum-gyun sits in silence inside a locked room. When he hears footsteps, he gets up and looks around wildly. As the steps come closer, he jumps up on the nearby stretcher and pretends to be unconscious.

Somewhere on a different floor of the hospital, Chief Hong and his partner look through the rooms. The partner clearly thinks this is a wild goose chase and says that Woo-jin — with his blue bugs and blue birds — is as weird as Hong is.

A man in scrubs walks into Bum-gyun’s room with a syringe. He prepares to inject something into Bum-gyun’s neck, when Bum-gyun grabs his hand and bites his arm. This makes the mysterious man scream in pain, but he manages to overpower Bum-gyun and inject the suspicious drug.

Circle04-00224.jpg

Chief Hong hears the sound and says they’ll search the place one more time. Meanwhile, the man in scrubs takes out a blue worm and positions it under the nostril of a now-unconscious Bum-gyun. Oh no!

The next day, Jung-yeon arrives at Woo-jin’s place and calls to tell him that she’s coming up. Just out of the shower, Woo-jin is thrown into a panic as he speed-cleans his room and puts on a shirt backwards and inside-out over his towel in his hurry.

Jung-yeon notices the backwards shirt, but suppresses her smile as she walks inside. Woo-jin belatedly realizes this and quickly turns it inside-out, as she settles down on the floor. She notices a pile of discarded clothes shoved hurriedly under a table, and sweetly puts a pillow against it to make it look like she didn’t see it.

circle04-01.jpg

He asks why she hadn’t told him about her father, and she retorts that she never asked about his dad either. He can’t argue with that, so he tells her to level with him, so he isn’t confused about her.

She asks what could be so confusing, then suddenly gets a coy look on her face. She gives him a flirtatious shove as if he’d said something forward, and Woo-jin falls over himself to make it clear that he wasn’t talking about that kind of confusion! She laughs at his seriousness and tells him to focus on organizing their findings.

Circle: Two Worlds Connected Episodes 3&4: Just When you Thought you Knew Everything...Or at Least the Important Things

by Eboni Jolly on Fri, Jun 02, 2017

Show has to me trippin’! Conclusions that were drawn are now in question, theories continue to formulate in the brain, and show literally threw a previous assumption out the window - damn! Find out what I am talking about as Unnichan, Akua, and I continue to go around in circles with Circle!

E-Kun: Forget last week’s brain explosions - this week show brought tears to my eyes, killed me, and hoodwinked me! Biggest discovery this week is Joon Hyuk is Bum Gyun! HOLY CRAP!

Akua: I can see that this drama is going to have my hair all laid up to the side!! My goodness! I wasn’t sure if Joon Hyuk was another unknown sibling or one of the twins (Woo Jin) or just someone who had a chip implanted and was out for vengeance/justice. But for him to be Bum Gyun!!! HOLD UP! HOLD UP! HOOOOOLD UP and pass the kimchi! This about to get real up in this joint!

996a994f-ced3-42d0-90f5-199b165e6253.png

Unnichan: Well I for one am ecstatic!!! *dancing in the streets* Bum Gyun had my heart, so I am overjoyed if this is really him and he survived. I was convinced he was Woo Jin because of his mannerisms but if this is really Bum Gyun that means he’s picked up these mannerisms from phantom memories and watching those tapes! Show I love you! I really, really love you! That also means the doctor they’re working with in Normal Earth is most likely the culprit Woo Jin and HJY-2017 were tracking down, Bum Gyun’s ally?

3e398be5-5fbf-4aa6-bedf-b2a829d937c5.png

E-Kun: Well, aren’t they twins? While I think it is entirely possible to pick up the traits through those methods, we didn’t know too much of Bum Gyun other than he was “paranoid†and he was an ex-con. But I am just beside myself with this discovery! Normal Earth Doctor really could be cray cray girl from 2017;but I KNEW “Daddy Professor†was a fishy character. He was too immersed in what Woo Jin was saying about “forgetting†I hate to say anything after this Bum Gyun slap in the face, but I think he is a strong contender of being Human B.

91891756-38f3-4edf-92f8-4fc05552555b.png

Akua: Bum Gyun could never finish the Rubik’s cube and throughout all the episodes we’ve never seen him complete it. I think that while his memories may have been blocked, his personality wasn’t so the fact that he had all those mannerisms doesn’t necessarily mean that he memorized them from the tape. Character traits and personality don’t disappear that quickly even without memories. Daddy Prof’s demeanor toward Woo Jin was always weird to me. There was no apparent evidence to the contrary that Woo Jin wasn’t a flake but Daddy Prof always stood up for him. And when we see him looking at the cctv with Bum Gyun lying down on the stretcher????? Yeeeeah, he’s most definitely a bad guy to me.

Unnichan: Of course. But my point is that Show purposely set out to hold these things back; most things. Only dishing out traits that seemed to overlap, in order for us to draw our own conclusions, setting us up for this very reveal. I think that certain specific traits are entirely Woo Jin and not Bum Gyun, but twins have a tendency to fill in those blanks when the other isn’t present. I like that Show did that and used it as a red herring. Where Daddy Prof is concerned he must know the twins, from way back in 2007, with HJY-2007? He said he needed Woo Jin remember? Plus if he has HJY-2017, most likely he knows where she’d been and what happened to the boys’ father. From what we do know, we always have to factor in this chip. The thing is, I’m not quite ready to say he’s the Chairman (Human B). His Asst. Prof seems very keen on making a name for himself and creating havoc, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some hostile takeover occurs.

17fdcd7c-6a06-4154-a1c0-5eb6664906f2.png

E-Kun: That Assistant Professor is an elitist snob! Every time he opens his mouth, I take a deep sigh. I too thought of that possibility, but Daddy Prof. is doing stuff he has no business in 2017. I would like to know why HJY-2017 has no memories either. It makes total sense that the first half of the show is called “Betaâ€... isn’t this all a test run? I am literally sick to my stomach at the thoughts people have thinking this is cool - like Lee Ho Soo! It took a lot out of me to hear him out… and he still got a “hell no†from me.

Akua: The robotic bug disturbed me to no end. Whatever chip it contained, I’m sure it’s a prototype of the Smart Care system but what is its connection to HJY-2017? Daddy Prof may have created it in an attempt to figure out what happened to her memories but if she really is an alien then how did they meet? And is she even an alien? Could she have been an android? Or is she really human and something horrific happened to her? My thoughts are all over the place and I’m loving it. So intrigued by all the characters including Lee Ho Soo. But y’all remember Matrix? Some people chose to go with the pill that left them in the imaginary world rather than in the real world because it was too hard. He’s one of them. It’s really interesting to me that he’s having problems with his memories returning now along with everyone else. Some glitch is in the system but is that a system issue or is someone else causing the glitches to start the downfall of Smart Earth?

Unnichan: That’s where I am. While I don’t personally agree with Ho Soo on this, being I contend that our memories are a part of who we are and considering and dealing with them in positive ways is best--- If individuals chose to wipe memories away, then I wouldn't try to strong arm them. Relying on reason seems a better course. Life is hard and painful but most survive and help others recover in healthy ways. Our pain shapes us, giving us empathy and compassion and I truly wouldn’t have it any other way. Lee Ho Soo, however, is being commanded by fear and I am not for that. If he and others made sound reasonable decisions based on facts and desires, then fine but from the way this is being presented to us, that’s not the case. Seems to me more like it’s some Smart Earth fine print. This glitch might have to do with time. HYJ-2007 showed up and disappeared, then pops us 10 years later, with no memories. I wonder if there is time trap they didn’t anticipate or fix properly.

79a5e385-9dd7-4e5a-b843-0b9b73e7aa91.png

E-Kun: Thank you both for stating my point before I could elaborate on it - Smart Earth is not asking if these people want their memories wiped or altered; they are just doing it and that is why I have a problem. Look at how this whole situation with Mi Joo has turned out! How cruel is it that the man that possibly molested you as a kid became your caretaker in Smart Earth? Also, the symptoms seem to match up with those students who “committed suicide†in 2017 - headaches, nosebleeds, unusual behavior, etc. It is all pretty suspect. And now we know HYJ-2017 seems to be Bluebird 2037 unlocking all these memories - another reason I look at Daddy Prof. upside his head with suspicions laced in my eyes.

Akua: But is Bluebird 2037 also HJY-2017???!!!! And how did the Police Captain find Bum Gyun in the first place? Oooooh, I can’t wait for all of this to be unraveled!!!

1c37eac4-d497-4a2a-8f9f-9b26044fde95.png

Unnichan:Oh I definitely think it’s her or some form of her. At the present, we don’t know what she is, where she came from or who made her. All we know is that she is a “clone†of a girl with the same name/face in three different times. No amount of black eyeliner is going to make me believe she isn’t the same age as the other “girls†which means she doesn’t age. That in itself creates its own quandary and thread. My issue is that she didn’t recognize Bum Gyun. And while that’s entirely possible, being she didn’t interact with him nearly as much as she did Woo Jin, it causes me to question her memory even now. There’s a lot to take in and tons more to find out. Cause I still need to know what Woo Jin was doing in the woods. Did he see something? Is that why his family was chosen? Exciting stuff! *rubs hands together*

E-Kun: Well she was as stunned as we were to see Bum Gyun - I am curious if she was hoping he was Woo Jin. And now the biggie: What happen to Woo Jin? I see why this show is called “Circle†because things not only keep going around in my head, making the connections between now and the future to come full circle is thrilling too! I am loving this so much!

Akua: I can’t wait to see how this drama unfolds!!! Come on next week!

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??... (via DB Staff)

unnamed-23.jpg&key=a20b6f283a07ed0c4a142

It’s been an amazingly full week for me, mostly because I’ve been hit with the disease where I have been finding everything interesting. Nothing has fallen off the watchlist yet, but time will tell if I can keep up this pace (I’d bet on no), and which shows will have to be put on the back-burner. For now, though, I’m reveling like a glutton. A glutton with a stomachache and dark circles from all the drama gorging. No regrets! â€“javabeans

javabeans

  • Circle: Omg this got so exciting! Every time I’m in one time period, I think I like it best, then we move to the other time period and I think that’s my favorite. It’s so rare to find a show that’s not just good, but so unpredictable and assured that I feel safe just diving in head-first and putting my full trust in the drama to deliver something awesome. Plus, every episode keeps upping the ante and throwing even better twists our way, and I’m just really happy to be watching this.

  • Circle: I really miss shows that have a distinct and bold sense of directorial and atmospheric style, which is often used to update a hackneyed genre (no hate, I love sci-fi). I thought this would be the one to satisfy that craving, but instead I’m left pretty disappointed with the look and feel. I’ll stick around for a few more episodes and maybe marathon it at the end, but I don’t feel any urgency to keep current with it.

tipsymocha

  • Circle: AAHHH. This show is amazing. I love the memory theme linking our main players together, and I’m surprised that they revealed the identities of our resident alien and amnesiac detective so early on. I’m also intrigued that the baddies in our show could very well be humans doing what they think is right, because there ain’t nothing as scary as determined, smart people acting on good intentions. I just hope that the show can keep up this fast pace to the end, since all we’re going to get is 12 measly episodes.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Circle" Episode 5

photo855372.jpg&key=817e29c1dd3b20902073

The ghost of the past roam the future as it is time for many identities to be revealed. In 2017, Jeong-yeon and Woo-jin have a fallout over the past she is afraid to face. The old asylum gets many visitors in search of clues, including Detective Hong. In 2037, Joon-hyeok meets his Bluebird and discovers that he is being watched. The big question now is whether Woo-jin is still alive and whether that is a good thing.

I am glad that some identities are sorted and some motivations are established. Park Min-yeong (Jung In-sun) being Dr. Park (Kim Sa-hee) became clear when Joon-hyeok's (Kim Kang-woo) identity came to light and the forever salty Lee Hyeon-seok (Shin Ju-hwan/Min Seong-wook) has not changed much. Jeong-yeon's past and the source of her humanity are still unknown, but we know that humanity defines her and her choices.

photo855371.jpg&key=8ec1e495ba0407080b65photo855370.jpg&key=ff48969ef1afc505079d

There is an interesting parallel between the twins, Jeong-yeon (Gong Seung-yeon) and Ho-soo (Lee Gi-kwang). Woo-jin (Yeo Jin-goo) spent so long rejecting the truth and Beom-gyoon (An Woo-yeon) looking for it. Now Jeong-yeon wants to give people back their lives while Ho-soo wants them to remain trapped in a superficially pleasant, sterilized, cold lie. I know the series wants us to fear that the Chairman may be Woo-jin, but a lot does not fit and so I am pretty sure this is not the case.

That being said, Woo-jin has to be somewhere and if Jeong-yeon is not lying or unsure herself, he has to be alive. We have not really met a lot of characters of Joon-hyeok's age, so where is his little brother hiding? More importantly, where does Mayor Yoon (Nam Myung-ryul) fit into things? Will we see him in the past and learn how he and little Dong-soo (Jeong Joon-won) became connected to Joon-hyeok? I know not everyone has to be connected, but Korean drama loves this trope and the creators of "Circle" seem to share that sentiment.

photo855369.jpg&key=02f9126d66a322cbde3cphoto855368.jpg&key=bf2c08ad925ff08819e8

There are things I am still curious about when it comes to the world building here. What happened between the two timelines? Why are local places called Smart Earth and Normal Earth? Where is the rest of the world in this and how could a corporation mass-erase memories without people knowing? I would think building an artificial island with kidnapped amnesiacs would draw some local and global attention.

I know we will probably not get answers to these questions. We can just assume that countries cut all contact with one another or that the island is a test observed by major countries who want the technology to control citizens. I still wish the series would throw us a bone, however. "Circle" being a highly enjoyable science fiction work makes me greedy and I consider that greed a sign of success for a story.

Byul/Bluebird in 2037 is hot AF. That aside, she said everything happened because of her. I bet she was involved in a blue bug experiment in 2017, but we don't know how. She goes to psychiatrist and so called consulting consists of her forgetting past. I want mystery about her and twins father to be solved asap.

Im also think Byul hot too, and im so excited to see her more,

lets watch subs now since its alrdy release here hurrplz.png
