Why are pop singers underrated?

Why do people hate mainstream music and dismissed certain artists just because they sing pop music? I mean I used to hate pop music during my hipster era but that was mainly because of peer pressure and "trying to be cool". Now I'm more accepting of any genres as long as the song makes me feel a certain type of way. My current fave pop artists are Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. They can write, sing, and put on a fucking show. Also, Bruno Mars but he doesnt seem pop. He's more of a mix of pop, funk, and Rnb.

What are your thoughts on this?

pop music has a bad rep because it's generally viewed as a type of music that is aimed at the lowest common denominator. it's music that's produced for the sole purpose of being popular and played to the mass. To some music snobs, that strips away any artistic merit.

I think pop music fans are to blame partially, because they're always saying shit like "It's just pop, it doesn't have to be good / they don't have to be talented / etc / etc." But then again, the ones who are saying this are listening to some of the most basic pop there is.

idk people wanna be unique and extra lately, and listening to pop was/still is sometimes viewed as "basic" to a lot of people (those who don't listen to pop, at least) so they trash on it and say it's basic asf and lame.

i personally disagree, there are some great pop bops out there that are on replay for me :)

I shudder when I see basic songs such as Chainsmoker's "Closer" becoming successful.

All I know is that vocal talent has decreased over the years. It also doesn't help that I tend to get of the EDM genre really quickly.

I was born in the wrong era, imao (not technologically wise of course).

Miley's song "Malibu" is ok... It's pretty safe and banal to me though. She just seemed to grab people b/c she decided to clean up her image.

EDM is on the rise now. Those tracks are occupying more spots on the Hot 100.

A bit off topic, but I asked myself this question when Ariana Grande released the best (pop) song of 2016, Into You, and it only peaked at #13. People preferred basic ass Closer.

cause the general public have shitty taste and worship EDM that sounds like it was made by a 5th grader

btw only female pop singers are underrated, look at the pop boys. Justin, Ed, Bruno Mars, etc have been slaying the charts this year while the pop girlies are rotting
