The Puzzle Pieces of “It’s Okay, That’s Loveâ€

its-okay-thas-love-cover.jpg
This image has been resized to fit in the page. Click to enlarge.

Seeing as today is Thursday and the perfect time for a quick throw-back article, we’ve invited phoenixbasilisk of Picadrama to write about a great drama from the not-so-distant past – “It’s Okay, That’s Love†and the many pieces that make this drama both unique and unforgettable!

Like a jigsaw puzzle, life is something you need to piece together. Each piece is unique and you need to find how everything fits. It’s about patience and learning that if one piece doesn’t fit right now, come back to it later. Eventually, the pieces will come together to bring satisfaction wrought by effort and time.

Puzzle Piece One: Bluntness â€“

What I really appreciated about this drama is how blunt all the characters are with each other. There is barely any beating around the bush with feelings. It’s either I like you, or I don’t. Let’s work for our love or let’s break up. The couples talk about their feelings with each other so the other party is in the know and can act accordingly. They tell each other their dreams, goals, career limitations/boundaries, and what they want to get out of the relationship. Most importantly, they learn to compromise.

1p1.jpg

Puzzle Piece TwoRelationships â€“

The drama portrays several different types of relationships. The one between Jang Jae Yeol and Ji Hae Soo is complex with both of them having suffered from traumatic pasts that make it hard to be close to each other. Hae Soo is traumatized by having seen her mother in an ongoing affair, while still being married to her father who is impaired. This leads her to fear intimate touch to the point where she almost has panic attacks.  Jang Jae Yeol is suffering from a hard-to-manage mental illness, schizophrenia, which blurs his idea of reality versus fantasy. He must endure involuntary commitment and isolation from the one he loves. However, they let each other in and do not keep what they perceive to be their flaws, hidden. They compromise and support each other by letting each other grow.

its-okay-thats-love-2.jpg

The second relationship sheds light on middle-aged divorced couple of Dong Min and Young Jin who are already married to other people for a second time around. The drama touches upon the very possible lingering feelings of affection and regret that can be part of a divorced pair. It shows that being close friends afterwards without overstepping boundaries can still be possible. It also shows the cat and dog fights that the pair constantly has due to misunderstandings and unspoken feelings in the past. However, it is important for each side to understand and forgive what had torn them apart.

its-okay-thats-love-3.jpg

The third relationship is between the young lovers, Soo Kwang and So Nyeo who both have parental issues. Soo Kwang has suffered his entire life from Tourette’s Syndrome, which causes him to burst out into uncontrollable tics and vocalizations.  Even his parents often look him down upon him. He craves a person who can understand him and not be ashamed of his tics. So Nyeo is a high school drop out who was abandoned by her mother and has a poverty-stricken family. She craves the attention of men who are able to buy her things and take care of her. Although both are still immature, they learn to grow together. Although rocky at first, these two gradually begin to understand each other. They are not ashamed of each other’s flaws.

its-okay-thats-love-4.jpg

Puzzle Piece Three: Mental Illness â€“

Coming from a nursing perspective, I appreciate what the drama has done to shed a positive light on individuals suffering from mental illnesses. Often mental illnesses are severely looked down upon and people tend to ignore it because it is not “physical†and you can’t see it. Furthermore, coming from a traditional Asian background, it is sometimes hard for the older generation to accept mental illnesses and instead they treat it as something you can get over if you have the will to do it. It is important to remember that much of mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances that can be corrected through pharmacological ways and different forms of therapy. These individuals are often incredibly lonely as they deal with an illness that is within their own mind and that no one can fully understand what they are going through. The drama shows that mental illness is not something to be ashamed of or repressed, but rather something to be supported through and treated.

Furthermore, this drama casts light on caregiver strain and the effect mental illness can have on loved ones. The couple where the female with schizophrenia was pregnant and was married to a loving husband is a good example. When the female had an episode or felt like the burden was too much and even tried to walk into a lake, the husband was there to support her and draw her back to reality. His patience and care was moving to watch since he couldn’t help cure her illness, but he could be there for her. Furthermore, mental illness can be stressful for parents of the person affected. Sometimes parents do not know how to deal with their child who is experiencing something in their mind that they don’t understand. This can at times break a relationship, or bring it together. There is no shame in going to group therapy for caregivers. It is a safe place for them to express their feelings and ideas to other caregivers who are experiencing similar strain.

its-okay-thats-love-5.jpg

Puzzle Piece Four: Domestic Violence â€“

Again, this is another of those hidden issues that is often overlooked in society. Domestic violence is such a personal and complex problem. The victims of domestic violence are often spouses and children. What can start as a small bout of yelling can quickly escalate into a shoving match or beating. The couple can be stuck in a vicious cycle where they must depend on each other for financial reasons or other reasons. It can be hard for one partner to speak out and call authorities since they don’t know what will happen afterwards and if children would be taken away. Furthermore, sometimes there can be emotional dependence where one partner thinks the other one will change and forgives, but the violence will continue.  Unfortunately, children are also commonly victims of domestic violence. Whether it be they are the main victim or get hurt trying to protect another loved one, many times children do not have the strength or ability to defend themselves against a stronger opponent. The result of these violence acts can cause such deep scars that they carry over into adulthood or trigger mental illnesses. This drama sheds light onto the domestic violence problem and how it is often ignored by outside people. It is difficult for bystanders to get involved, as they don’t want to interfere with personal affairs. That is why in the drama it is such a touching and heartbreaking moment when Jang Jae Yeol makes peace with himself and the past as he acknowledges it was not his fault.

Oh yes, how can I forget the DRAMA itself, and the excellent supporting roles like LKS and EXO DO....In fact, the PDnim and Writernim ought to win for their excellence as well.

I haven't seen the full list of nominees, I wonder if GHJ and JIS are nominated for best actress and actor? I hope they are cos they did so well in IOIL.

Hwaiting Team IOIL!   :ahmagah:

Jade - you (and your team?) are truly remarkable. I can't imagine the time and effort it's taking you to translate the essay book. Us international fans are really dependant on translations so we tend to miss out on a lot of peripheral things. It's great getting to know further details and the inner workings of Noh and the casts character building as well as general bts things further enhance the experience of IOTL even more imo.

Thank you so much :rlytearpls:

I think the only award GHJ is up for is The best couple award. GHJ has been missing from a lot of the award nominations. I'm guessing as she hasn't really been on the scene (preparing for her play maybe?) there has been a lack of incentive to nominate her. It seems like it's the males from IOTL that are getting the most love award wise. JIS, LKS and DKS have recieved awards and nominations; which is kind of sad considering that GHJ was the lead female and such a large part of it - it would have been great for everyone to be nominated.

Drama Review: It's Okay, That's Love

iotl2.jpg

It's official, It's Okay, That's Love is the best Korean drama ever. But now that it's over and as a blogger that I am, what am I supposed to say about the drama that blew my socks off? A ride on the emotional roller coaster might take some time to heal, but it was the best ride in a long time.

Let me just make myself as to why I think this drama is the best. It hurts so good. I'm one of those masochistic watchers that crave a tear or two. Some of my favorite movies includeAmerican Beauty, Like Crazy, and Before Sunset, all of which made me sob like nothing else (I also love (500) Days of Summer but a sob-fest that is not, unless you're Tom. Or Summer watching The Graduate). There's something about crying to movies that makes it feel so good.

That being said, I don't think I've ever cried as hard to a drama as much as It's Okay. Innocent Man got close, the classic Sorry I Love You is a sure bet tearjerker. But nothing, that I've watched at least, was as raw as It's Okay. The tears weren't forcefully punched into my face accompanying somber orchestral melodies and the alligator tears produced by the actors. It's the sort of rawness that a lot of people hate watching on movies or TV shows since it brings them emotions they're trying to escape from in real life. But what can I say, I like my movies to hurt.

iotl1.jpg

It's a risky move for a drama airing on a major broadcasting channel to portray these kinds of emotions. It's Okay ended with a 12.9% rating, only 6th in its time slot. Those numbers aren't terrible, but they're not exactly the best. Especially with all the wonderful romcoms that are out (some of which I've enjoyed), who in their right mind wants to end their day sobbing?

I know not everyone is going to share my fondness for this drama. As I've mentioned before, it can be an emotional roller coaster. In one episode I can be laughing my ass off and a few minutes later I'll be bawling like a maniac. Yeah, it plays with your heart. But it's just so good. To me, everything just fell into place. The actors, the writer, the director, the cinematography, the songs. It all fit perfectly like puzzle pieces. Take one aspect out and it wouldn't be the same.

As I've mentioned in my First Take that this drama is smart and real. It deals with grownup feelings and relationships without dumbing the audience. A big factor of this is the actors themselves who would play out each scene and emotion with full awareness and subtlety that it never goes overboard. It's also thanks to writer Noh Hee-kyung who decided to keep the drama's metaphorical feet on the ground. I could imagine all these "crazies" running about would create the best makjang series ever, instead she along with director Kim Kyu-tae decide to keep it on the drama down low.

iotl3.jpg

I also appreciate its depiction of mental health. It can be a doozy trying to explain the storm that's happening in someone's head. I don't think their goal is to portray mental illness exactly as how it is. They're not trying to impress a board of medical professors. But what they did try to do is shed a more sympathetic light on this thing that is usually seen as scary and mysterious. Your everyday person doesn't need to know the required positive symptoms necessary to diagnose schizophrenia, but they do need to know that it is relatively common (1 in 100 people), it can be managed by medicine, and with proper care they can have a normal life like anyone else. In that sense, the drama succeeded.

And no, it's not a perfect drama. Throughout the series, I'm often baffled by Hae-soo the Psychiatrist (Gong Hyo-jin). First off, in the earlier episodes, she would consult her cases with Jae-yeol (Jo In-sung) of all people. Or how she has a heavy psychological burden (by way of her sex phobia) when she's a practicing psychiatrist. No one can be free of mental disorders, but her condition is a bit much for someone who's supposed to ease other people of their emotional baggage. My biggest complaint is mostly that, and it's not even that significant as her phobia would later be overcome and she would later only discuss work with her colleagues. Some also say the resolution to these mental problems were a bit quick, but hey, we're not watching a documentary and there's a limited time here. They were dealt with in the best way a drama could. No need to dwell in unnecessary angst.

iotl4.jpg

And with that I'm going to say It's Okay is the best drama not just of this year, but ever. It hit all the right notes in the right way. This throne might be taken by Secret Door (premiering in a few days!). But for now, It's Okay takes the number one spot. Sorry Sassy Girl Chun-hyang, you're a personal favorite but this drama is too fantastic.

Gong Hyo Jin is Lovely in First Visit to Taiwan to Promote It's Okay, It's Love

Posted on January 6, 2015 by Koala

ogdl.jpg

It's wonderful to see Gong Hyo Jin pop up looking so radiant and rested. The last time I saw her was right after It's Okay, It's Love wrapped and she needed rest and recuperation for her arm injury and an emotionally grueling and physically taxing drama shoot. IOIL is one of my favorite K-dramas from 2014 and it's finally hitting the airwaves in Taiwan. Gong Hyo Jin visited the island for the first time in her fifteen year career to promote the drama in a whirlwind three day trip.

Her arrival at the airport was met enthusiastically with over 200 fans, most of which were ladies which isn't surprising to Gong Hyo Jin as she admitted that for whatever reason most of her fans tend to be women. She was whisked to a press conference for the drama and found her delicious costar Jo In Sung waiting for her there. Not exactly in the flesh but a life-sized cardboard cutout will suffice. Gong Hyo Jin was asked about all her male costars and revealed her most compatible was Jo In Sung. That ought to make IOIL shippers happy!

I love Gong Hyo Jin's entire look at the press conference so so much! Only she can pull off something so patterned without having it overwhelm her or seem too busy to the eye. Her tri-color furry sandals are also da bomb, with the orange, beige, black a perfect complement to her outfit.

She was asked about all the kissing scenes in the drama, fifteen to be exact, and whether she enjoyed kissing Jo In Sung. Gong Hyo Jin revealed that kissing scenes are filmed with so many staffers standing around it's the opposite of romantic, and what she remembers most about kissing Jo In Sung on screen is how very tall he is which left her with neck aches after the scenes wrapped. Poor girl, can we change places to give your neck a rest?.
