Girl Group Version

I've decided to make a post in memory of and celebrating all the amazing music and eras we've seen from 2nd gen. idols group. I selected 15 boy groups I think best represent the 2nd gen era (2001-2011). I've also put down a list of honorable mentions so please check that out as well.

2003

DBSK

One of the most memorable groups serving ballads and pop track both filled with talented members and gaining recognition throughout Asia. Their success in Japan helped break down barriers between the two countries and their overall impact on K-Pop itself can't be denied.

Favorite Titles: Mirotic, Wrong Number, and Rising Sun

News: Jaejoong is on tour at the moment, and TVXQ are rumored to comeback this year as well.

2005

SS501

The rivals to DBSK during their time, they sure did bring back the "bad boy" vibe to K-Pop. The group received immense popularity during their peak, and continue to release music as SS301 these days.

Favorite Titles: Deja Vu, Love Ya and Fighter

News: Japanese comeback in June

Super Junior

K-Pop's first prominent group with a huge team. The group has served us memorable choreography and have been successful as a unit for over a decade. Their members all have been venturing out into different fields, and conquering them as well.

Favorite Titles: This Is Love, Sexy, Free & Single, and Evanesce

News: Rumored to comeback later this year

2006

Big Bang

A group that helped boost the popularity of hip-hop inspired music and has received both domestic and international acclaim. Their members have also gained much love as soloists. Truly one of the most global K-Pop groups of the 2nd generation.

Favorite Titles: Blue, Fantastic Baby and Tell Me Goodbye

News: GD tour and comeback in June & Daesung collab with Dreams Come True

2008

SHINee

A group that has transformed over the years, but still keeping true to their classic RnB sound. From flower boys, to simply men having fun, SHINee have musically aged like fine wine.

Favorite Titles: Everybody, Breaking News and 1000 Years Always By Your Side

News: Rumored comeback later this year

2AM

Notorious for producing hit ballads, 2AM wouldn't be themselves without them. The guys are a talented, hilarious quartet and have ventured in various solo activities. Hopefully they'll comeback to bless us with more music in the near future.

Favorite Titles: You Wouldn't Answer My Calls, I Was Wrong and Days Like Today

News: Currently on hiatus, but members are doing solo promotions

2PM

2PM have made a name for themselves for being "beastly idols" as they're known for their upbeat, high class and mature concepts. They've had a huge impact on the hallyu wave, especially in Japan, where they've performed at huge arenas. The guys never fail to deliver with the variety of genres they delve into, and I hope to see more of them in the future.

Favorite Titles: My House, A.D.T.O.Y and Without U

News: The group will be going on hiatus most likely due to military enlistments, but solo promotions in the acting field will continue

U-KISS

While their debut wasn't exactly received well, the guys have gained popularity both domestically, and especially internationally in places like Latin America and Japan for their EDM and highly energetic pop tracks. But that doesn't mean that they're unable to do slower songs, in fact a lot of their popular Japanese tracks like Inside of Me are pop-ballads, which they pull of incredibly well. Man Man Ha Ni, Neverland and Standing Still are only a few highlights of their vast and gem filled discography. A very well deserved group who have been through a lot these past few years, but have solidified their position as proliferates of the Hallyu wave.

Refined and talented men, from their debut as BEAST till now, the guys have went through quite a lot over the past few years. Under Highlight I hope they can continue shining and doing what they find enjoyable for more years to come.

Classy and sexy is what one can come to expect from MBLAQ. Their vocalists are incredibly talented, and I hope that they'll be able to comeback as a trio soon.

Favorite Titles: Stay, Smoky Girl and Mona Lisa

News: Currently on hiatus, but members are doing solo promotions

2010

INFINITE

The group that has lit up the name of "Sweetune", the seven guys started from the very bottom and made their way to the top with their hit Be Mine, and several others following. From their synchronized choreography to their signature sound, it's no wonder INFINITE were able to break barriers.

Favorite Titles: Last Romeo, Be Mine and The Chaser

News: Comeback later this year most likely after Japanese promotions

Teen Top

Fun and energetic, with amazing footwork, Teen Top were able to bring comical and sentimental aura in their musical ventures. I hope as five they can continue to do what they do best: entertain.

Favorite Titles: Rocking, Supa Luv and No More Perfume On You (minus the lyrics, lol)

News: They just had their comeback earlier this year and will be continuing promotions in Japan

2011

Block B

After a rough start in their previous agency, Stardom (Hunus), the guys created their own company and have been doing their own thing since. Their hip-hop music infused with sometimes quirky and sometimes more mellow concepts have been making fans proud for years.

B1A4

The definition of whimsical, B1A4 have grown from being a group of adorable young guys to maturing into edm, jazz, ballads and just overall a more classy style. Jinyoung's compositions have impressed, and I hope for a quick return to Korea by the five guys.

Favorite Titles: Solo Day, Only Learned Bad Things and Baby I'm Sorry

News: In the middle of individual Korean promotions

Boyfriend

Receiving rookie awards and growing in popularity as the group grew older and shed their innocent boy image, I'm glad Boyfriend were able to dabble into different genres. I'd love another Sweetune comeback from them, as I-Yah was just amazing. Hopefully once they wrap up Japanese promotions this can come to fruition.

Favorite Titles: I-Yah, Janus and My Avatar

News: Currently in the middle of solo promotions

Some very special mentions:

.ZE:A - it's rare to see a group of this size to not have any members changes, but ZE:A stuck it out till the very end. Although their future is uncertain at the moment, I hope the members can find success in what they enjoy doing.

.DGNA - group has been out for nearly 7 years without any lineup changes, and the boys have been together for almost 10 years. Their vocal talent is one of the best among the 2nd generation. I hope they continue doing what they love and making music.

.L.A.U (aka X-5 aka LU:KUS) - These guys have been out for 7 years and have been moved from company to company. They've got the talent, and I just hope they can go where they want to musically.

.Code-V - group has been around for over 7 years and promote mainly in Japan, but they're continuing to do what they love, so it shouldn't matter in which country they put out music.

.Supernova - they have been doing their thing for almost 10 years. They've had success in Korea, but have focused on Japanese promotions for the past few years, even holding a concert for 13,000 fans in Yokohama stadium. Goes to show how Korean success isn't the only thing that keeps groups afloat.

.DMTN - while now most likely disbanded, this group was full of charms and solid music. It's a shame they weren't able to continue.

.F.CUZ - the boys served their past 6 years filled with amazing music. Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong are just a few of the places they got to promote save Korea. I hope to see them all flourishing in later prospects. I cannot wait to see their return as 5.

.MYNAME - a group full of charisma and talent. They've received mild success in Korea but have been churning out great music in Japan mostly these past few years. I hope they stay together as a unit, because they work very well together. I also need a Korean comeback from them as soon as possible.

B1A4 <333

I was just thinking about my name the other day, what happened

Who knew The boss were still a thing

MYNAME and DGNA both are still in Japan. It makes sense though. If Korea doesn't care and you can make more money in Japan anyway, then Japan is where the groups will stay.

All of these groups are amazing, and I love every single one of them.

I seriously hope we will get a 2am comeback one day, I miss them. And I hope that the other groups will also continue for a while to come.

(I seriously don't know what I'll do if some these groups ACTUALLY start disbanding. It would be the end of my kpop journey. Most of the groups that I love is from this era)

From the looks of it MBLAQ seem to be going down that path... sigh. T-T

This is so well written. Kudos for that. And it looks funny how most of them are on Japanese promotion.

Hope they will keep up their momentum and delivering great music for us all

Thank you. It took me a while to write because I had to fact check information, search for proper ocean pictures and make sure I wasn't half-assing any group's description.

And I hope so too... I don't know how I feel about the generation shift aside from the fact that I love CROSS GENE and they're from way back 2012 so...

Aww now I'm sad ...I miss 2nd gen rlytearpls.png

kpop was so different and thank you OP your post made me remember some amazing songs

though my personal jam was MBLAQ's Y

just soo nice

I had trouble picking only three songs per group, but I wanted to be fair so that's what I ended up with. Y is a jam and so is Cry!

I feel like a lot of the rhetoric that era negatively impacted how the song itself was received. I missed Jonghyun then too but the era remains one of my favorite SHINee Korean comebacks due to how great the song was.

I think the song was bad received because it was less friendly than it used to be I think. Misconceptions era had a more aggressive sound (title tracks wise). Jonghyun I missed him too!
