how many idol careers actually suffered because of a dating scandal?

Inspired by the Mina thread. I feel like people really overstate the significance of a dating scandal. Yes, female idols have to endure shitty male netizens slut shaming them but at the end of the day, does it really affect their career?

Taeyeon - still slaying the charts

IU - still slaying the charts

Seolhyun - still getting CFs and just landed a movie with Jo In Sung

Suzy - still being cast in dramas with top actors despite having no acting talent

Hyeri - heck, her dating scandal made her MORE famous

who else? Krystal? She's still doing her own thing. Sulli's career was affected by her own lack of effort and even then she's still landed roles and photoshoots.

I'm really struggling to think of an idol whose career suffered because of a dating scandal

well baekhyun suffered for like a year...but ppl have mostly (supposedly) put it behind them. But to me, he hasn't been the same since. He's a lot more guarded and gives 110% in fanservice for some reason now.

Most of them only received backlash but their career aren't ruined forever. As long as they stay hidden and let public to calm down usually they can recover from the scandal. Infinite L and EXO Baekhyun had a messy dating scandal but now they're fine.

I think it depends on the idol. most of the idols you listed have a solid (and large) female fanbase (ie. Taeyeon, Suzy, Krystal, IU etc), who tend to not let dating scandals affect their support for their idol.

Seolhyun's popularity did take a hit when the Zico dating scandal happened - a lot of her fanboys jumped ship. Although not disastrous, she certainly isn't as big/popular as she was prior to the dating leak.

I would say Seolhyun and Hani have lost some of their hype, I'm not really sure if it's because of the dating scandals or if it just happened anyway.

I don't think dating scandals have long term consequences on most idols. But for that short period of time, it's practically hell for you if you date someone with a lot of fans.

At the time of IU's first dating scandal(Eunhyuk one),she was known to have a majority of male fans. Apparently the term uncle fans was created for her. IU survived because of her talent, she has a voice that the general public loves, and a good song writer.Suzy and IU survived because they rely on the general public than a fandom, and general public doesn't care about their personal lives.

The shitstorm Taeyeon got in 2014 and 2015 was extremely hard to watch as a fan. I remember every day an article would come out about her "attitude". Of course now she's doing well, but right after the "scandal" it was such a bad time.

Baekhyun and Taeyeon got most of the hate. I still hate those stupid nitizens who criticize their relationship is fake.

Taeyeon would sell +200k with her debut album if she never get caught dating

uncle fans abandon her after

it actually never really ruined an male Idols career tbh .. it's just that some fans got petty and jealous because their illusion of their Oppa forever being single and in a ''relationship'' only with them got destroyed !

and for the females , eventhough they get the most backlash it also never really ruined their career .. no matter how popular the person was.. from what i noticed especially with the Baekhyun and Taeyeon dating scandal is , that many fans were angry taht they were fooling around with their feelins for example posting a picture claiming it was for their fans while it was actually for both of them

Also statements like '' i will never date my fans are my only relationship '' aren't helping when you then really end up dating.. you might think that many of these pre-teen Girls would know it was just fans service but nah they don't they take something like that very serious especially since ''OPPA'' is their world

but still those things never really ruined an Idols career rather female nor male

so i don't even get why dating it's called a scandal anyway..

Idol's careers were ruined by many other things but never because of dating !

Interm of bigger picture, public is the most important with idol career to get cfs/acting etc and in general they do not obsessed with idols dating cuz they are old, mature and have their own life (so broadcast station, companies, production don't care either). I mean why they even care/bother with some young stranger celebs are dating?? My reaction will be like that too if I was them Lmao

So as long as the idols already established their name and face with public and industry, their career won't really affect by dating. Cuz the companies that hire them want to sell their "name" and "face" to public.

It only affected within the fandoms like some might lose certain amount of fans and get hate from opposite fandom, antis use the chance to trash on them (the more popular you are, the more reaction from the fans/antis). But people moving on after awhile, idols can still gaining new fans with their new projects. It only feel huge cuz fandoms and antis reaction are huge.

But Hara and Junhyung dated when their groups peaked and were very successful

She got roasted HARD and JY/SY too on Radio Star by their SuJu "friend" Kyuhyun.

It was all international fans talked about when it came to her. Along with ELFs making them apologize for SLIDING a bottle, the media play on it AND the elementary kids who whined about not focusing on school bc of their dating news (>_>).

they dated in 2011 broke up in 2013 (probably i forgot) it wasn't the dating that made her career goes downward it's the fucking question kyuhyun dished out and no one media played it it's all over the news because of the alleged attitude issue the elementary students crying is from 2011 when the dating news broke smh

It is not a scandal in the first place but oh wellz...

After Eli announced his marriage, the fans that matter left and Kevin too. Some of those remaining fans were angry that they are constantly reminded by his posts on SNS and appearance on KBS Mr. House Husband. Pretty much a WTF situation.

Suzy - still being cast in dramas with top actors because she is also an established top star (She is even more famous that some of her co-actors in Korea), and she's not even bad at acting, she's decent, that you like it or not...

Anyway, it's not surprising to see OH users put down Suzy even when it's not necessary and especially not the topic, this forum is full of stupid mentality.

Eunhyuk... He was near giving up after the scandal and revealed it in the thank you message in the album Mamacita in 2014. Since the scandal, he has been witch hunt constantly, he lost his solo mc career (which was starting rising before the scandal), and when Donghae & Eunhyuk released their album in Korea in 2015, they didn't promote it except appearing in the music shows (soit the lowest promo possible) and they didn't do a concert in this country during their Asia tour...

For the witch hunt, some examples : for more than 6 months just after the scandal, he has to live with bodyguards near him (it shows the serious threats he received); on all his appearances in variety shows just after the scandal, he was made fun by mcs but journalists always managed to modify it on their articles to bring him down as someone riding the scandal (the only time he talked about the scandal, he said he was living a hard time... a totally different story of what journalists and netizens wrote on his subject); he was named on near all false sexual scandals possible (with Suzy, with Hyuna, with UEE, his tweeter account hijacked with nudes photos and citizen concluding he was responsible of it and not a victim..); he was also named when nasty rumors were created against IU in 2013 and it was also against him (the marriage and pregnancy); there are rumors he gave up a variety show in 2013 after accidents of some people bullying him during the filming (i can't prove this one, but he disappeared from he show without real explanations just after the aired episodes corresponding of this day), there are proofs during his military service at the beginning he was bullied by some people (he changed his training unit, there were tweets of some soldiers proud to make fun of him using iu musics, other soldiers saying rules were invented on his unit to prevent to use the scandal against him); and i'm not talking about all the insults thrown here and there for years (when dating news of iu and giha happened, one of the comment the most upvoted was insulting him...).

ditto. in my opinion he comes to a conclusion that...he should've paid attention MORE to fans..like he's been talking about wanting to spend lots of times with fans.. that he read every of fans comments to give himself motivation..and if the effect is showing less thing that can be related to relationship (Baekyeon, in this case), it's natural(?) but i think it's sad...

i think the answer is withing your post..why Korean fans think it is scandal because they are jealous?they think that idol should be dedicated for fans only? just because fans buy the albums..go to concert blablabla(spending their own money for oppa). i recall read something about this.. and i 99.99% sure it is translated from korean (korean fan made the post).. i mean, i doubt international fans will post something about idol must never dating. and if international fans feel angry, they must be influenced by this korean fans mindset (or maybe they're just really jealous).

so my conclusion is..,.

It is not a scandal in the first place but oh wellz...

and.. come on.. baekhyun's eyes, smile, stare.. to taeyeon are full of honey...starting from that 2012 smtown momenthurrplz.png

I think short term career damage is there, especially for younger idols. Baekhyun, Kai, Hani, Seolhyun surely lost fans when their "scandals" broke but I wouldn't even call those fans in the first place, only obsessed people that finally saw the light and realized their idols have lives off screen.

Long term, if they don't let themselves be too affected and their companies deal with it then there shouldn't be a problem.
