Even in Japan, white skin is revered. Rich aristocratic court women in the Heian period used to paint their faces white with lead as part of beauty. Tom Felton had to avoid the sun for all those years he played Draco Malfoy since his character was pale af and Tom naturally tans easily (and while his natural skin tone is still light, his skintone as Draco was lighter than natural), and yet his skin tone when he played Draco was far more natural-looking than Goo Hye Sun's.
