BTS and Media Representation

So lots of people are still saying Top Social Artist Award and the BBMAs are irrelevant, idc. But let's be real here. When do you see people of Asian descent represented somewhat respectably on American/western stages? Almost never. So at the very least, I'm going to recognize that a group of Asian guys who looked dapper af got an award on a major American stage. Hey, it might just be a popularity award... but doesn't this contradict the very reason that music execs (and all other entertainment industry execs for that matter) don't give Asian (Americans) a chance in the U.S.? They think they're not popular or marketable? But yesterday, most major entertainment news outlets covered BTS because they recognize how popular they are and have been trying to milk it.

And don't stretch my words and say that I think music execs will suddenly start signing Asian American artists cuz I know they and the public are still racist af and it won't change until they're dead tbh. All I'm saying is I am here for positive Asian representation in the country I live in, even if it comes with racist reactions from close-minded people.

Buzzfeed article about the win and Asian representation.

Many times

Even in Grammys and Oscars

Edit : Did I say something wrong ? I was just saying cz I'm an Asian and artists from my country have been invited to Oscars and Grammys and other international awards and festivals and have won a couple of times and its true . Damn some people are so generous with their downvotes .

Damn, even I couldn't get to my own faves' threads faster than these salties do. That takes some dedication...or too much time spent on OH. 0u0plz.png

BTS may not be the first to represent Asians on a huge Western/American stage but they are one of the few who did, and compared to the amount of other races represented in their mainstream media, it's still a very, very small percentage, so yeah, I'm frickin' proud my boys did THAT.

American movie producers have been trying to break into the Asian market for a while now,by casting Asian actors as leads/supporting characters in movies/series. It's actually becoming more rare to see Asian Americans than to see full Asians.

If you want to gain American relevancy, now's the time. They should really capitalize on this.

I don't get this at all. I'm Asian. Like Korea has a whole industry for themselves, it's ridiculous to want some representation in another industry you're not even pandering for.

As if Korea or Asia as a whole ever represented people other than themselves.

Yeah it's not like it's the biggest music industry in the world which everyone looks up to around the world and which influences many people. The American industry is also an international industry. Asians being represented will influence so many people. Kpop and even j pop are niche genres.

Stop being so close minded and limited. It's not about seeking validation but to break boundaries

It's ok, you don't feel represented, but those people above feel represented and that's what it matters.

Now will i see you in all the bts threads? Are your faves that boring?

Ohmygod

KEYWORD: "American"

It's the biggest? Cool. That means the market will be saturated and it will be even harder for anyone to become famous. It is not the American industry's fault that people look up to it and want to be in it knowing how saturated it is. This is exactly about seeking validation.

Ehm and kpop and j pop are not oversaturated ? Nowadays everyone wants to be famous and that's why everything is oversaturated from people making meaningless music just to gain 5 minutes of fame to the massive amount of idols in korea japan. It's everywhere but only people with extreme charisma and talent and luck can make it truly big. Instead of being salty you should just be proud of BTS for having that certain charisma and grabbing the hearts of Many people

Especially because you claim to be asian yourself. I am not SEAsian and even I feel more pride than you.

Wow, way to miss the  point. OP is not talking about the Korean music industry, but about Asian representation in American media.

Between 2000 and 2010 there was a 43% increase in Asian American population in the US. In 2010 there were 17+ million Asian Americans, of which 1,4 million were Korean Americans.

I guess all those people should just suck it and accept that they are underrepresented in mainstream media. Or maybe they can be happy about the fact that yesterday there were some positive Asian representation on TV, even if it came from people outside the US.

Here, some reading.

Literally none of that has nothing to do with my other comment.

"Claim to be Asian" what the actual fuck? Apparently Asians don't exist?

I don't even know why you brought South East Asian into this, did you literally just imply that SEA aren't Asian enough or that they're inferior to North Asians? I'm Thai-American and I feel very offended. That's really ignorant of you.
