they were around 4minute's level circa 2011 and were fairly popular

i'd say they're comparable to where lovelyz is rn? except their members had more public recognition (sunhwa bc of iy and hyosung bc yknow)

they were on the same level as 4minute during both their peaks tbh

hyosung had more public recognition as an individual and sunhwa too before people turned against her both were popular bc of variety shows and hyosung also because of her body

Kinda like AOA but without an "it" girl

i'd peg them a lil lower than aoa at their peak? and idk about it girl but hyosung was the standout. not seolhyun level but decently popular.

ehhhh if you're comparing it like that, 4minute were def more popular than how lovelyz are right now. they had more hits.

i'd say secret > lovelyz

but 4minute and secret comparison seems...more accurate. although 4min seemed more popular with ifans

i was def around at the time but i really don't remember much about secret

yup i think so too. although maybe 4min seemed more popular than lovelyz bc the idol market wasn't so convoluted at the time? otherwise i think their fandom sizes (4m/secret/lovelyz) are about the same size (minus ofc the hyuna akgae thirsty males)

between 2009~2010 Secret was as popular as 4minute/Sistar

but after 2010, Sistar had better success among the 3.

Secret had the initial early popularity with the nickname of basement idols, and it was mostly Sunhwa that carried the group image through variety shows. But their songs at that time were kinda catchy too so it was received well with the public. Hyosung only actually became really popular when she started doing solo activities.

I agree with Lovelyz comparaison. Secret was kinda known and popular and has several title songs who were popular enough like Madonna, Shy boy (their peak), Starlight Moonlight and even Love is move.

However, I wouldn't put them with 4minute who were slightly more popular and have more hit songs (Hot Issue, HUH, Mirror Mirror, Volume up (overshadowed by Alone but still did well), What's your name, Crazy)...I'd say if anything that 4minute peak was longer than Secret but you know Secret could have compared if not for Hyosung ilbe controversy and the car accident which put them in hiatus.

If we were to compare with actual gen of girlgroups it would be something like this ?

Twice - SNSD

Black Pink - 2ne1

no equivalent yet for Kara/Wonder girls/T-ara

Mamamoo - Brown eyed girls (vocal group) / Sistar

Red velvet - F(x) / Gfriend - Apink

no equivalent for 4minute (because cute is trendy now)

Lovelyz - Secret

Oh my girl/April/WJSN - maybe After School level ? Not that popular but known by the public ?

Others rookies who just debuted like IOI members'groups so it's too soon to tell.

This is my opinion. So in short, yes Secret had a popular phase but it ended too fast to really build a fanbase :/

SECRET was definitely popular, but I wouldn't say they were really popular. I think other girl groups of that time such as miss A, SISTAR and 4minute were able to gain more popularity and 'peak' higher in their careers as a group than SECRET was able to imo. But SECRET was still def relevant.

I completely don't agree with the Lovelyz comparison.  Secret may not have been super popular, but they charted far better than Lovelyz does atm.  I do agree with the 4Minute comparison though.  You could argue that 4Minute peaked a little higher, but if you were going to rank the girl groups, you would still rank their success together, as many Korean sources, at the time Secret was still relevant, did.

Sure Lovelyz isn't trending as much as the new monster rookies that are Twice/BP/RV/Gfriend but I'm sure they will be put with them in 10 years jist like 2nd gen gg also include 4minute/Secret/After School when at the times after WonSoKa+T-ara and 2ne1, you could only put MissA or Apink. So I think Lovelyz is definitly doing fine enought to compare with Secret. As someone else said, there were less compitition back then so maybe that's why it might feel off to compare.

Less competition doesn't mean that their success is the same. Lovelyz currently is still pretty irrelevant to the public.  Saying Secret is comparable to the current Lovelyz would be lowering their success.  Even if they weren't super popular they still had their name known and charted decently well.  You could probably compare fandoms, but not their general public success.  No matter what, even today the Secret name is probably bigger to Koreans than the Lovelyz name.

Yes the market has changed, but that doesn't mean that obtaining medium success now is the same as obtaining medium success during the second generation.  It's completely different.

Uhm its not just that they are not trending. Not just about having more competition. The difference is that Secret was actually a relevant group and were popular at some point of their career. Same goes for 4minute and After School. So of course they would be put alongside the groups you mentioned. Secret had songs the public knew + they had 2 popular members so I really don't get the Lovelyz comparison tbh. If anything, isn't it a bit disrespectful for Secret and their legacy? They were popular. I don't see anything I've mentioned in Lovelyz right now, they're probably only ahead in fandom numbers. You gotta chill and wait for your fave to get to that moment tbh.
