What are the benefits of taking a gap year?

I am trying to decide whether I should take a year off or not, college just seems hella daunting and I'm not sure I'm ready for the demands, but I don't know if a gap year would benefit me or not. I had a pretty rough year and I also suffer from loads of anxiety.

you will have more time to ponder over course selection. if i had the extra year off i probably wouldn't have jumped straight into something i didn't like.

and you can take the time to learn some coping skills for when you hit uni. maybe get a part time job too so you can save money

definitely i think its a good time for healing, self-reflecting and doing things you like especially if you've just come from a rough year. i was planning to do a gap year before entering uni but my parents ultimately didn't allow me (they initially did) and i feel like i'd be in a much better state mentally and emotionally if they had just let me.

If you feel like you neeed a break, you should go ahead and wait a year. I think this would be a smart decision.

If you wanna finish school ASAP (like me) then just bare with it cuz college isn't as hard or complicated we all think it is during high school. This is the route I chose to take so I can finish school and do what I want to do in the future.

But you do you!

Omg I have the same dilemma, but I'm thinking of whether I should take a gap of 6 months . I had a really hard time in my previous school,my grades dropped, and I didn't really make any friends. Probably the worst 2 years for me so far.I also developed really bad anxiety, and I just hated everything for a while. Now I'm really scared of going to college.

I just don't want to end up taking something I suck at.

it has big plus of having time to think carefully what you wanna do next + you can earn a bit of money in that year.

but also you kinda get out of the "habbit" of studying, so it takes some time to get back on the track .

and i know alot of people who made a break and they loved the money (not some good jobs, mostly part time jobs) so they stayed doing them instead of going to University.

it really depends on you

It depends. On one hand if you can make sure that you'll spend that time wisely, ie. reconnecting with yourself, working on improving your mental health and relationships, doing the things you've always wanted to do etc then it's one of the best thing to happen. On the other hand you can end up not doing anything and just waste a year worth of your time. Both happened to me, so I think it's better to make a rough plan and spend conscious effort to do something with that time instead of "oh I'll just take a gap year and see how it goes."

But if you feel like your mental health is bad then I definitely recommend taking a break instead of just pushing yourself thru.
