I couldn't find any thread solely for studying tips so...

If you can share some I'll add them to the OP to help students out there

I suppose the tips could be on anything related to school life (e.g. picking a major??) since it'll hopefully help someone

Studying for exams

  • When you take an exam for a subject that requires a lot of memorising, read through the whole paper and write down what you know for each question in point form.
  • For studies that requiere to memorize a lot of authors and dates, do separate sheet for each author and write down the most important aspect of their research. (Nelkah)
  • Remove all distractions (internet, phone, etc.)
  • Don't 'multitask', it doesn't work even if it feels like it
  • Don't do anything until you finish all your work (ie. stop rewarding yourself with breaks before you finish) (슬기 is 뭔들)

Student Life

  • Log off OH (Timmy)

It's not long enough for a spoiler tag but I'm attempting to procrastinate

i do 45min studying 5min break, 45min studying 10min break, 45min studying 15min break until break of 30min then i go repeat from 5min breaks.

(if i have to study whole day for example)

it usually works pretty well

also i take out the notes from books myself and use colorful pens so i can memorize it easier

if i have a script i just use colorful markers.

i usually go learn page by page. learn 1 then i ask myself questions. i wont go on to page 2 until i've memorized everything on page 1

-note : i am a nerd when i have to be lol

i might have a few weird ones that help lmao

  • when i take notes i write everything in particles, with some doodles & colours (every colour has a function)
  • i often switch where i study,, so i don't always study at home. i found this very helpful
  • music!! many people say it doesn't work but for me, having some upbeat music playing can really get me pumped & focused lmao. some people can only study when it's quiet though.
  • and actually i do find taking short breaks helpful as otherwise it makes me lose focus on what i'm studying easily. usually i do little things like washing the dishes in my break while munching on smth.
  • turn off the internet man... unless you really need it for research, it's so distracting (even though i'm studying rn and here)

If it's about math or anything deals with calculating, you'd better do exercise exercise and exercise with various type of questions until you get bored and you can do it 'without seeing'

Subject-specific tips, according to what I did:

Maths

Practice papers, practice papers, practice papers. Do as many as you can. This trains you to adeptly apply those concepts into a range of questions so that you won't get thrown off during an exam.

Sciences

Understand the concepts first and foremost (good youtube vids are actually useful). Then it's just rote learning lmao. Study via repetition :) I just do this through look, cover, check. E.g. read the first step of how to produce an ester, cover, recite the first step in my head, read the first and second step of how to produce an ester, cover, recite the first and second step in my head, rinse and repeat. For calculations (volume, concentration, moles), I just do the same thing as what I did for Maths.

English (pretty much essays, essentially)

I pre-wrote my essays before my exams and modify what I memorised LMAO. Not the best strategy but at least I'm memorising my techniques and shit. Some of the questions they throw us are pretty generic anyways.

Picking your degree/major:

Pretty much single out which broad areas interest you (finance, health sciences, law, business, maths, arts etc.) and look up the courses that lie under these umbrella areas. Read as much as you can. I know that there is flexibility in you changing your pathway later on but there's no point in wasting money y'no. Might as well do something worthwhile that is more likely to interest you (also take into account what you're good at). It'll also help you get better marks if you do want to change majors later on.

I hope this was of some help ~

  • hand ur phone/computer to someone and dont let them give it back to you until ur exams are over (sounds hard but it does wonders)
  • practice a lot for maths
  • understanding and mastering the topics is ultimately the best way to get through tests

Change your playlist of favorite OSTs from movies if you listen to music while studying.

If it's not an original song with lyrics, the better. You won't get distracted trying to sing the lyrics in your head.

Don't spend too much time on just one part that you don't get. 9/10 you'll forget what you already know cause you focused so much on one thing

Do all the questions. If it's math and you don't understand how you got it, reverse the steps and go from there.
