Article: 'The Liar and His Lover' Sorry for doubting you Joy, the rediscovery of an acting-dol

Source: X Sports News via Nate

1. [+320, -19] Typical SM style media play... when any of their idols go into acting, they put out articles talking about how good it is..

2. [+295, -17] ???

3. [+258, -19] Joy always looked so out of it in the drama

4. [+40, -3] What crap is this article talking about.. ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ Just look at her visual, her visual isn't enough to get into acting... and poor Lee Hyun Woo has no eye for picking dramas. He has such a boyish face that he needs to cash in on it now before he gets any older and his character range becomes limited but he's wasting his time on dramas like this..

5. [+31, -9] Her singing was good but her acting itself was... awkward...

6. [+21, -2] Her face itself isn't meant for acting..; and the drama recorded 1% in viewer ratings but comments at Naver made it sound like some 10% drama ã…Žã…Ž all fandom power

7. [+20, -2] Her acting's pretty bad...

8. [+18, -2] It's not just her acting that's the problem, her visuals aren't enough to be a lead. Even the likes of Kim Go Eun and Park Sodam get hate for being leads when they're so ugly... All this drama did was prove once again that any drama with SM freeloaders as the lead will never break single digit viewer ratings.

9. [+16, -1] What part of her acting are they calling good? I couldn't even focus because of her face with her huge mouth and her eyes that looked out of it all the time. Stop with the media play, SM.

10. [+15, -2] Didn't get the impression that she was good

Article: The discovery of Joy as an 'acting-dol' and not Red Velvet

Source: Sports Chosun via Naver

1. [+1,061, -130] She still needs to study up on acting more

2. [+1,562, -361] Good job Joy ã… ã… ã… ã…  now let's get back to being Red Velvet's Joy ã… ã…

3. [+573, -57] Joy seems like a very bright kid but she's actually very introverted and sensitive. I really related to her when she said that if it wasn't for this drama, she would've stayed trapped within herself and viewed the world with bias.

4. [+584, -65] I'm sure Joy herself knows that she's still awkward and lacking in the field of acting. But as a fan, of course I'm going to support and encourage her. She's only in her early twenties and this is her first time acting so I'm praising her knowing that she'll continue to improve. Find strength, Joy-ya~!!

5. [+1,183, -299] I was baited by Joy's singing scenes so I started watching the whole thing and she was so loving all throughout ㅜㅜㅜㅜ

6. [+225, -31] There are definitely areas that she lacks in but she always checks reactions and gies feedback!!! I know she's going to improve in the future. And Joy is so white and pretty.

7. [+140, -12] Has there been any other drama where a female lead sang six of the OST songs? I think she did a great job. It must've been hard juggling acting practice with singing practice for all the songs on top of overlapping 'Rookie' promos in the beginning. I hope she knows that us fans recognize her hard work and were touched by it too.

8. [+745, -214] I saw a lot of Joy's charms and fell for her hard. I'll never forget her loveliness while playing her character 'Sorim'. She looked so pretty on screen and I'm looking very much forward to her future career.

the majority of these comments do not even understand what the drama is about at all. It's a musical drama based on a Japanese manga, they needed someone who can sing to play the role of Sorim. And they casted Joy. She isn't my bias but I thought she did fine. Plus you can't expect someone who is new to acting to be perfect. Yeah, there are some acting-dols who are able to do really well the first time, but they just happen to have a natural talent for acting.

EDIT: Wtf did I get negged for when I didn't even say anything wrong?

i can't at the comments that say you must have "actor visuals" to act or to be a lead, like what kind of stupid logic is that?

Her acting was awkward at times, but even Hyun Woo's acting was really awkward at times, too, especially in the incredibly cheesy scenes.

I don't know why Joy's the only one getting hate, when Lee Hyun woo, being an experienced actor was awkward.

The point is if you're not good at acting, you should start with smaller roles. Or at least practice via small shows, before making an acting debut.

If her acting is bad (I haven't seen the drama) then criticism is warranted. But the comments are literally just bitching about her visuals not being  "good enough". Why does it matter ? This is why Korea's drama industry will never be critically relevant and none of their acting stars ever become globally famous.

Lol at the citizens always being petty af. They always say this to new acting idols tbh. When will the stereotype between idols and actors stop? Ive seen even 'experienced' actors/actresses being worse than Joy. And whats with the visual? Shes so fucking pretty

okay, point noted but the role was in need of a singer and not many young actresses fit the bill and she auditioned and was chosen and the team had faith in her obviously since she was selected. lets not act like she forced the production teams hand and made them pick her and if she was more suited for a smaller role than she could have been selected to play the role of the other female supporting role. its true she was awkward in some scenes but come on it really did not take away from the story, its likely even yoojung or sohyun would have seen the same rating results. in the end the storyline and direction is just as important. the opportunity came and she took it, its true starting from smaller roles is best but you name me one actor that wouldnt have loved to be selected as a lead on their first audition, its the result of ambition which is positive

Honestly you can see how biased naver is since we all know mostly fandoms band together there to upvote their biases so i don't really trust their comments..

But then on the other hand, we have nate who is known to hate so..

I'll just say that her acting was bad in it, everything about it was awkward and they only hit a 1% rating which is bad for a tvn drama.

Should've started with a supporting role

SM has brand power. Only a fool would not pick an SM artist to increase ratings. The fault isn't on Joy here, it's moreso on SM for giving her an opportunity where she would be misplaced. I'm not sure how it worked behind the scenes, but ambitions shouldn't trascend realistic ability either. She doesn't deserve hate, but the casting in general is always a tight spot for idols especially, and I think SM should have known better.

Also Sohyun is an excellent actress. The plot for this storyline is frankly vanilla though so in the end the actors can only do so much.

There are quite a bit of acting-dols who could have, and probably did audition for this role, though?
