MAGIC THE GATHERING DECK TECH: MONO-U CONTROL

Para-DX

Recommended Posts

Been someone who has been experienced in Magic the Gathering? Or are you looking for an easy and simple to play deck? Or maybe, you are just sick of seeing those two-colored decks or three-colored decks running around the Standard format? Then, this deck tech is just for you!

Mono-U Control is a straightforward, understandable Standard deck which packs with instant-speed countermagic, absurd cantrips, and of course, big gigantic creatures to close up the game. It is a deck that we shouldn't belittle of!

So i will break the deck into different catergories in terms of functionality. This deck may seems costly, but it is a great way to start Magic the Gathering.

Okay, so one of the problems in current Standard is, we are always building decks to fight off the current meta or to get defeated by it. So how will Mono-U control be deemed different?

Controlling the Boardstate:

As told by the namesake, Mono-U Control is a control deck so how can we misses the usage of these countermagic available in Standard? Censor is a newly printed counterspell in Amonkhet, which we are playing 4 copies, since it can literally counter anything. Of course, however, it is much more useful prior to midgame or lategame where your opponent trying to slam a big spell and you can simply Censored it. Otherwise, you can just cycle it for 1 blue mana and draw a new card.

On the other hand, Essence Scatter is a great reprint as it hits any creatures, making sure your opponent won't have any potential lethal on the field while working towards six mana (you will find out why); Negate is just, well, negate any noncreature sheninengans and of course, Disallow could prevent any Planeswalkers from activating their abilities or simply, just countering a spell can get the job done as well.

Commit // Memory is an unusual case in this because it doesn't counter a spell. However, it does buy us some time to build up our mana, and of course, the Aftermath is a great plus to this deck as you gets to refresh your counterspells back into your deck, and able to react to any late game sneak-out win from your opponent.

Cantrips:

Hieroglyphic Illumination is one of the deck's card-drawing engine. Feeling too early to draw? Just cycle it. Otherwise, drawing two cards is pretty decent for a control deck. Glimmer of Genius is pretty much the backup copies, and it lets us scry 2, which is an important factor for a control deck, since we don't want to draw into any lands instead of our countermagic. Pull from Tomorrow is really a ridiculous card. It may look silly as you draw X cards by paying X mana and have to discard a card, but on a bright side, it is good way to pack your hand with answers against your opponent. Fearing you might outmill yourself? This is why the Memory part of Commit // Memory comes into play. By casting Memory part, you shuffle your own hand and your graveyard back to your deck, while reloading yourself with 7 new cards. It is a great combination, fo be honest. Not bragging.

Beatsticks:

Torrential Geahulk is our main star and trump card of this deck and the core piece that puts everything together. Don't look down on this 6-mana 5/6 Artifact Creature - it can be a massive beater after you worked your way to six mana, with your opponent tapping out, and simply, ending the game with this blue giant gearhulk. If your opponent can't answer to this creature, it will be a 4 turn clock to victory.

Of course, if anything goes wrong, i mean horribly wrong, we have our one-of big Eldrazi creature that can punish any decks by exiling two permanents off the table and milling your opponent within two turns.

Engulf the Shore is just a situational bounce spell, and since we are playing only one color, this 4-mana instant is good sweep the board while facing aggressive decks.

Manabase:

As for manabase, we are playing 26 lands. I repeat, 26 lands because this is a control deck, so you wouldn't want to miss a land drop on the curve or you will get punished pretty severely throughout the game.

The inclusive of Sunscorched Desert was a last minute option because i realize having a mono-blue deck that plays both Torrential Gearhulk and Engulf the Shore is fun but risky at the same time. One misplay and you might be bouncing your own gearhulk back to your hand and leaving open windows for potential damages. So having 2 copies of this Desert land could minimize the risk, and at the same time, dealing 1 damage to your opponent is just icing off the top, right?

Other than that we are playing 24 basic Island (i particularly love the art of the Island i posted above).

Sideboard:

It is just week two of Amonkhet Standard and although Felidar Guardian is officially banned, it doesn't mean we can slack a bit. As far as i concern, the sideboard option (which i included in the link for the decklist), having a couple more resilient creatures like Kefnet, the Mindful or Sphinx of the Final Word is a good way to go against grindy decks or mirror matches. And Walking Ballista is good when you are mana-sinking. I believe casting a 10/10 Walking Ballista is kinda...exciting?

Alright, there you have it. This may be my shortest deck tech but to be honest, it is one of the most interesting yet fun deck to play with. And if you wanna opt a secondary color, i would recommend going Azorius or Izzet, because it gives you either a sweeper or boardwipe or some sort of burn spells.

Have any decks you want me to make next? Leave a comment below and give an upvote if you like my deck tech series. Till next time~~~
