iu and gdragon vs suran and changmo (prod by suga): what really happened?

i'm STILL shooken by suran's instantaneous rise to the top. and what makes it even crazier is that she pulled it off in the midst of iu's long awaited, much anticipated AND well liked comeback. iu and gdragon are indisputably 2 of the most powerful artists in korea. so how did suran knock them down a peg after a literal week (or two)?

i mean, suran had a lot of things brewing in her cauldron. she was getting attention for some OSTs and a masked singer appearance, changmo ( a currently trendy, gp friendly rapper) featured for her, and bts' suga (in a currently trendy group with an intense fandom) produced the song. on top of that it's a good, gp friendly song.

but think about, even with all of this combined, should it have been possible for her to overtake iu, even without gd, under normal circumstances?

i don't know what this says about the current state of the korean music industry. people expected suran to fall after the first roof hits. then they expected her to fall after a week. but shes still there and she's NOT going anywhere. i wonder what this means for her future.

It's not really that crazy. Winner, Hyukoh, etc. all had songs that briefly rose above IU's pre-releases, but then she over took them within days. Same happened with Suran. IU's been number 1 one Instiz for over a week now.

Anyways, I wish Suran best of luck with future releases and hope her success continues.

Palette had ~400K downloads in about one week. Suran's song had ~160K. Suran might have "knocked them down a peg" on the charts, but that's about it.

but pre-releases are different than the whole comeback. i mean, suran hasn't dropped from #1 n melon at all from what i've seen. i guess instiz is more telling since it combines the charts, but i'm simple minded lel. i was thinking only of melon.

Hmm. If IU has an existing fanbase that will by her songs first week (with GP ) but Suran doesn't wouldn't it be more accurate to wait how a song does in the long run in terms of dls. I'm not too familiar with digital talk.

suran was only hyped by army bcuz of suga which is sad bcuz her music is good. but she would have never charted like that if bts wasn't involved. she prob would have been in a lower place but stable, vs now. and yes I listen to her music for almost a year now.

She did better digitally than bts ever has, so bts couldn't have been the main reason for that.

Just to be clear, many ARMYs would've been talking about Suran's comeback regardless of Suga being on the track. A lot of us discovered her thanks to SFA and have talked about her since. Some knew about her even before that collab. K-ARMYs may not have been streaming the song like that if he hadn't been involved, but people don't exactly stream hard for a ton of artists.

Yes, IU is back at #1 on Instiz, but what I believe OP was referring to was her performance on Melon, which remains the most relevant chart in SK. Suran has been #1 on Melon for over 8 days and the fact that IU overtook her on other charts doesn't nulify that achievement, because consistent charting on Melon is a hard thing to pull off. It's still pretty impressive that she's keeping the top spot against fierce competition when other artists briefly took #1 and then dropped but Suran didn't. She hit 1m unique listeners (which very few artists manage to do) and is at steady 600~800k ever since. Not to mention her 7 roofhits.

Also, she couldn't have possibly done this well solely because of Suga. It's true that ARMYs hyped it and helped stream the song in the beginning, but having Changmo's name in there plus coupled with the fact that it's a public friendly song are the main reasons of its success.

this isn't true, hon. it just isn't. changmo is more relevant to the general public than suga has ever been. also as someone else mentioned, suran's song is doing better digitally than ANY bts song has EVER done. plus the song had over 1mil unique listeners on melon at one point. as much as we brag about our fandom size, that was not all done by armys. it's literally impossible. at least check your facts first next time. the gp made this song a hit
